I guess this is ok for someone who does not drive, but it looks awful to me. The tiny rooms, the food looked like exactly the same stuff they gave me in the hospital(seriously same type of packaging, like TV dinners and prewrapped snacks), the uncomfortable/small seats, etc. I just pulled up New Orleans to Orlando, just to see what the cost was, compared to flying. It was $430 round trip on Amtrak(or $1435 for private cabin), but I can get a plane ticket round trip for $257. The difference, is I don't get a sleeper on the plane, nor any meal, but I'm also boarding the plane and landing in less than 3 hours to my destination. Where as the Amtrak was 2 days of travel. Now in my automobile, the trip takes around 10 hours if you stop a couple times for gas/bathroom.(Around $95 in gas for my vehicle each way, based on 20 mpg that I get) So gas for both ways is $190 plus your going to stop and eat on a 10 hour trip, add that in plus snacks and you'll hit $250 pretty easy. So flying is certainly much faster and about the same cost as driving my vehicle 10 hours there and 10 hours back. I guess if your taking the train to watch the scenery go by in the window and that makes you happy, then that's ok. However, I can't see wasting 2 days of my life, stuck in a tiny room, not even as big as my home bathroom, and paying more for the privilege. I'd rather drive in my vehicle and stop and visit things along the way if that were the case. Otherwise, I'd jump on the plane, be there in 3 hours and use the 2 days to explore Orlando. Maybe if I were taking a train through some mountains, it might be a bit cooler to watch the scenery, but that would probably be the only way for me. If anyone wants to know how a room feels on the train, go into your bathroom and sit a chair next to the window. Now sit there for 4 hours and stare out that window. You like that? LOL, I know y'all gonna hate on this comment, but it's cool. I get it for real, some of y'all had a family experience on a train and it brings back memories for you. That's all good, I see your enjoyment in it, I really do, it's just not for me.

If you're considering the Auto train please give it a try. I napped and ate and arrived feeling fine instead of exhausted and red eyed. Good food, great attendants, comfortable bed and a huge, sparkling clean shower in the morning. Can't wait to go again!

Just for added comfort, bring a couple of rolls of your own toilet paper from home and some air freshener. You will not regret it.

There has been lots of news about rebuild of the NOLA to Mobile train. Everything was on track (no pun intended) Now in the past few days Mobile AL has started raising a stink over their convention center and want to pull out. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

I rode the Auto Train in 1976 coming back from Disney. We drove down from Northern Virginia and I guess my dad didn't want to drive all the way back. There were too many of us in one car. So, we got a double room and a triple room and I was on the top bunk. It was glorious! Best sleep I've ever gotten in my life and I was just a kid!

It was a fantastic experience. I had accessible seating and it was top notch. Plenty of room for my legs and bags and the staff was so attentive to my needs. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I used it twice bringing cars back from Florida. The first one was a mad max black on black, they had no issues accommodating it. I had it built for me by a place in Florida and felt the drive back to Pittsburgh from NJ would be enough. I had baked in enough time to cover for delays. The second time was picking up a mustang SVO I bought on street side classics in Tampa. In both cases I had already completed the title transfer process and had plates for both cars and paperwork when i arrived in Florida ( I usually flew down ). Neither car had too many issues crossing PA but the Interceptor was one very thirsty beast. I had to stop every 2 to 2.5 hours to refill the black on black (Supercharged 351 Cleveland Ford V8s are not slow drinkers). I have to have cutouts to run my sidepipes btw. The SVO despite being a 1986 was remarkably fuel efficient, needing only 2 stops to get home and having a 1/2 tank when I pulled into my driveway. I try to take these trips in the summer when I have light till 9pm. It gives me a lot of daylight. Might buy another car in the future and bring it home the same way. Makes it easy to get rot free Florida cars up north

Thank you for the detailed glimpse into the Moynihan train centers. I have a disability haven’t been to the city in a few years, but live on Long Island and visited regularly, remember when the Moynihan center was just the post office. Shame they wait until people have passed away before naming things in their honor, Especially in this instance, as Moynihan was a great proponent of doing exactly what they did to this space. Thanks for posting such a detailed walk-through!❤

Two vital infos----- you will hate a wet shower (sit down Johnny) and you will want to drive away from your reserved parking spot. For one, try this, every time you wanna sit down on the toilet, it and the floor around it is wet. You can't lower your pants or your undies without getting them wet..... You can't take them off without removing your shoes and you can't put your feet down where your socks on without getting them wet from the wet floor. Imagine that every time you're on the toilet and you will soon learn you want to shower and then "Johnny pot" to be separate. 2nd, pull your converted van into a nice spot reserved for you or into a comfortable camping spot and then realize that in order to hold those spots, you will have to leave there in the very vehicle that brought you in there. I can ride a short distance to the grocery or the our bus tour departure pointin a tiny towable car, meanwhile knowing my camping spot is held down by my primary vehicle. When you're tiny toy will car brings you back to your camping spot, you can unload into a big open lay-back chair in your van which is still sitting there waiting for your return.

I have ridden in this type of room and enjoyed it. My Late Wife and I had the Attendent just pull out the bottom bunk which was ok. That way we didn't use the top bunk except for the pillows and extra cover.

I'm a senior and purchased a handicapped accessible bedroom. This trip is taking place from WDC to Dallas Texas in June 2024. I paid just shy of $1900.00 round-trip and nearly 700.00 for my adult grandchild as my companion who will be assisting me. I'm now wondering if we should've taken the auto train. I seemed to be communicating with a " don't ask, no answer person when booking. I guess you are expected to know what Amtrak offers. With the amount of money paid, it sure would be nice of them if they would include the positive information along with the information of the rules about forfeiting you trip.
