Believe it or not the Tuner in the Sony STR 190 isn't bad at all. I've heard many negative reviews on it but maybe i live in a more receptive area, i'm pulling in plenty of stations crisp and clear. With that being said, i'm using the Tuner section as a stand alone component hooked up to the Yamaha A S301 so i'm getting the best of both worlds. I would have kept the Sony STR 190 as my main unit but running my 4 OHM Wharfedales made me uneasy so i upgraded to the A S301 which can handle the 4 OHM load. But you can't go wrong with either units for the price.

Had a first version talon 44, bought Jan 2010. I did my mountain Guiding courses with it. Travelled hundreds of times with it. Skiing, alpinism, trekking, bushcrafting, dessert, roughness....really heavy duty stuff. And now, only now is starting to tear a bit. Itsthe best, lightest most comfortable baflg i ever had. Even better than my Millet Epic. Wpic is bit more padding but heavier and bunquier. The first/modified first version of talon was something unique. As i said I'm a mountain guide, and have been carrying backpacks outdoors since 1991... I don't know why they just fuck up with good perfect features. What's the purpose???? We're not fashion killers. We don't care about feature modernity shit . And still the osprey is the best in the market.

I agree that a sub out on the Sony would be an awesome addition, but at $148 you can't complain. I use it in a 2.1 setup and as you stated, having the ability to turn toggle the subwoofer on/off with the remote is super convenient. I also find the option to adjust the bass/treble via the remote puts it over the top.

The 8/30 CL companion is around £1080, while the NL pure 8/32 is around £2240 (UK, June 2024). I have a pair of the 10x32 NL pure, and as good indeed as the CL companion undoubtedly are, they are in a different category when compared side by side with the NL Pure.

Can the S801 DAC be used as a substitute/replacement for a 2ch audio-interface (eg: Focusrite 2i2, Universal Audio Volt 2, etc.)… for recording into a computer (and not just for computer playback). I know it’s supposed to be used for playback/convert digital stuff into the analog/amp, like computer-usb-out into amp-usb-in. But, can the DAC’s USB also record external sources into computer? (like recording a dj mix from dj mixer outs, or recording a music-production from Mackie desktop mixer outs, etc.)

These can be modded to vastly improve the sound. I found the tweeter to be too harsh and swapped them out in favor of Tympani soft dome types. I swapped the factory butterfield cross-overs for a pair from Infinity two-way speakers and don't use the midrange drivers except to simply plug the holes. I also converted the cabinet to bass reflex by adding two port tubes to each cabinet front. Very small tubes perhaps a little over one inch. I also added acoustic batting inside to smooth bass and absorb hollow box resonance. A lot of mods but in the end they sound decent and far more enjoyable. A 3-way crossover such as a Infinity Reference 5 could also be used and keep the midrange operating but I think I would in that case add a L-pad on the mid to tone it down. One oddity with these from the factory is the mids are wired reverse polarity.
@MediaPipeDream2 ай бұрын
Huh, that is interesting, will need to check the mid drivers out and fix it. thanks for the tip

Good thing you didn’t try the Leica Noctivids and the Swarovski NL’s. I’d also like to mention you can’t appreciate and or see the optical qualitative differences looking through an upper mid grade to an alpha level bino in a store for a few minutes. You have to live with them a week or two to clearly see the differences.
@MediaPipeDream2 ай бұрын
I agree with the store comment. I was able to decern CA levels to a level I was comfortable with purchasing. I have yet to have an opportunity to look though a pair of NLs. I have read that between the 3 alphas (swaro, zeiss & leica) it kinda boils down to personal preference than sheer raw optical performance. Ex: one my have some more sharpness but more glare or one might have excellent contrast but more CA.
@Paultricounty2 ай бұрын
@@MediaPipeDream All good points , and some people can be more or less sensitive to some of those characteristics. But I don’t believe most people will deny that Leica produces more color saturation than the Zeiss and Swaro. Although I like them all, I find the Leica to have an overall more rich image characteristics..

I have both and prefer the features and sound of the sony. They are close but i can listen to the sony for hours and hours not the case with the yami the analytical nature gets to be a little much after a short time. Also the Bluetooth on the sony is insanely good for Bluetooth. And every amp company in the world should have sony engineers design their remotes its excellent. I also really like being able to label the inputs individually. The dh190 with a smsl su1 dac is where the sony outclasses the yami and its built in dac. Also the phono stage in the sony is a little better hooked to my fluance its remarkably good for a phono in a 150$ amp. I got my sony open box for 89$

I just got my first ever turntable and am looking at the yamaha as-301 for phono can I pug in powered speakers to the AS-301 or do I need to purchase passive speakers
@carloparisi36894 ай бұрын
Solo passivi. Solo il subwoofer qualora lo usassi sarebbe attivo. Ma la casse esclusivamente passive. Possibilmente buone.
@MediaPipeDream4 ай бұрын
The Yamaha As-301 is an integrated amplifier and does not have line level pre-outs, therefore you will need to use passive speakers with the As-301. If you already have powered speakers and wish to use them with a turn table you have 2 options: 1. Turntable with a built in phono preamp 2. Truntable without a phono pre amp + an external phono pre amp Both these options assume you have volume control on your powered speakers, if not you will need volume attenuation (volume knob) before inputs to the powered speakers. If you want to use passive speakers with the yamaha as 301 then you can use the phono input on the yamaha (if the turntable table does not have a built in phono preamp), the yamaha has a built in phono preamp only on the phono input. if the turntable has a built in preamp you can use any other input on the yamaha as 301 (line 1 line 2 or line 3) - those do not have any pre-amplification and accept line level inputs.

I am in doubt. This very nice Victory SF 8x42 or Zeiss SFL 8x40? I use it also in low light conditions such as dawn. Wich one you prefer? Is there a big difference?
@MediaPipeDream4 ай бұрын
Victory SF 8x42 is optically superior to the Zeiss SFL 8x40. SFL wins on size and price (possibly slightly more neutral colors with the SFL as well). Low light the SF 8x42 will be better than the SFL 8x40 on both accounts of larger objective and better glass of the SF 8x42. If it were me I would take the SF 8x42 or 8x32 over the SFL 8x40 for superior optics. Then you never have to worry about having best optical quality

Thank you for this amazing review. This is really helpful. Currently I'm considering buying a Nikon Monarch HG 8*42 for 815 usd. I already owned a Kowa BD II 8*42 and need to buy another lens for family. The feeling I got from other review is that KOWA BD II is on par with Nikon Monarch M7 therefore I want to do some upgrade and try Nikon Monarch HG. Zeiss Victory and Swarovski EL sound fantastic but is out of my budget currently. I also read somewhere that Nikon Monarch HG is comparable to Zeiss Conquest, don't know if you ever get to compare the two.
@MediaPipeDream4 ай бұрын
You are welcome, glad you found it Helpful! I have compared the Zeiss conquest as well as the HG side by side, both in 8x42. The HG were much better all around with the HD conquest being slightly optically superior (center sharpness and CA mitigation). Overall I kept the HG. However, I kept looking and ended up with what I discussed in the video. IMO, if you are considering the Monarch HG I would just get the M7 or save up a bit for a used pair of Swaro EL or Swaro CL B companions. Never fear buying used swar for their awesome customer service. No, I don't think I'm wrong, it looks indeed like a "1-gang" pot, yes...a mono potentiometer. :) Seems that the volume control, like many other functions, are done by the custom proprietary microprocessor with a flash memory inside, named YG398A9 and with a notice on the schematic: "No replacement part available". That means there should be no added volume pot. Johnson noise inside the audio path and no channel imbalance will occur, at least not due to the potentiometer.” trl’s post on audiosciencereview on the a-s701
