Building a healthy soil microbiome and fostering abundant microbial life is essential for sustainable gardening and agriculture. Here are some steps to help you achieve this: ### 1. **Add Organic Matter** Incorporate compost, manure, and other organic materials into your soil. These provide food for microbes and improve soil structure. ### 2. **Use Mulch** Applying a layer of mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and provide a habitat for beneficial microbes⁶. ### 3. **Avoid Chemical Pesticides and Fertilizers** These can harm beneficial microbes. Instead, use organic alternatives like neem oil or compost tea. ### 4. **Introduce Beneficial Microbes** You can make your own microbial inoculants. For example, you can create lactobacillus bacteria by fermenting rice water with milk¹³. ### 5. **Practice Crop Rotation and Diversity** Growing a variety of plants and rotating crops helps maintain a diverse microbial community. ### 6. **Maintain Proper Soil pH** Most beneficial microbes thrive in a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Regular soil testing can help you monitor and adjust pH levels. ### 7. **Encourage Earthworms** Earthworms aerate the soil and their castings are rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes⁴. ### 8. **Water Wisely** Overwatering can create anaerobic conditions that harm microbes. Water deeply but infrequently to maintain proper soil moisture. ### 9. **Use Cover Crops** Planting cover crops like clover or legumes can protect soil from erosion, add organic matter, and support microbial life. ### 10. **Feed the Microbes** You can brew your own garden probiotics using simple materials like rice water and milk¹³. This can be added to your soil to boost microbial activity. By following these steps, you can create a thriving soil microbiome that supports healthy plant growth and sustainable gardening practices. 🌱 Do you have any specific plants or herbs you're focusing on for your garden? How do you manage compaction from farm machinery?
@thelivingsoilwithtoby
@thelivingsoilwithtoby 3 ай бұрын
Good question! Especially in my area (Scandinavia) where soil is twice as sensitive for compaction as in other areas. We really should use machinery half the weight here... But there are a number of things we can do: - Lighter machinery Not as easy as it sounds though as very few people cover large areas in a short time and need high capacity=big machines - Reduced tire pressure - Subsoiling (without turning) - More roots in the ground - More worms - More calcium - Less magnesium My personal belief is that no-till only will not adress compaction, but if roots and worms are stimulated to replace the plough it can work better.

Not exactly sure, but search for a "Vortex blower" and you will find it. Mine pumps 21000 l/hour. The human body is made up of approximately 40 different elements. If the elements aren't in the soil then they can't be in the food so your body cannot get what it needs for optimum health. There is an old book called "The Ruth Stout no work gardening book". Miss Stout is long gone but the book is a classic. KLT

Why experiment on such large area? Maybe take a small or some small areas to do no-till, cover with dung from cows, another with chicken, another with sea-salt like dr Maynard Maynes did in Florida

You can check it simple by putting some dilluted hydrogen peroxide over a handfull of soil; if it makes ‘sound’/ sizzles it means there is much material so it reacts with the hydrogen. Try it😃

Hi Torbjorn, just saw your channel. Thanks for the effort. One simple way to check the quality of the soil is to see how ‘dark’ it is so whether it contains enough organic matter

Amazing video. Would add one additional element and that is to pay attention to the existing soil. Adding humus/compost is certainly important but conditioning your starting position is even more important. Example: seed alfalfa and other cover crops to get it to rip the existing soil apart. Four feet deep roots will help structure the existing soil.

Great point! A soil test can also show the levels of calcium, if that is low and magnesium is high it will compact easily. I make calcium acetate using vinegar in lime, I think it makes it more accessible than only lime.

Mina fosforvärden är katastrofalt låga. Det har inte körts ut gödsel på åkrarna under många år. Vad kan man använda om man vill undvika mineralgödsel?
@thelivingsoilwithtoby
@thelivingsoilwithtoby 4 ай бұрын
