Not sure if anyone told him, or if it got figured out by now, but windows being windows, it likes to shut off certain usb ports, especially ones using too much power. Go into device manager, scroll all the way down till you see universal serial bus controllers, then go through one by one into its properties, turning off the power setting "allow computer to turn this device off". That should fix stuff randomly disconnecting
