whoever shot this, was that helicopter that can be seen along the trains in the Pentrex tape of this event. That person did a far better job of shooting the event then Pentrex did.

what makes the black smoke cocome out?? i know nothing about steam

That was a show of raw super Heated Steam doin some heavy work. A couple of notes Union Pacific 8444 now 844 Steam Locomotive, did not get any assistance from the Union Pacific Diesel Locomotive, it was there for dynamic braking and to take over If 8444 broke down. I just now watching this race 8444 has almost three times as long train as 4449. At lest 4449 got the bearing issue solved. I noticed the coal or oil firing of 4449 was on the over rich and I think that actually slowed down 4449. Anyway a great video. Thanks for sharing.

Does anybody know why the 4449 was throwing out so much black smoke?

I see the concept of turning the props thru to prevent liquid lock. I see the precaution of turning in reverse in case of a hot mag and accidental ignition. That said --- they are turning these thru in normal rotation - to the right.

If they would've had HD video back then, I'd be able to see myself as an 8-year-old standing beside the tracks with my dad. But all I could see were a few blurred pixels. I remember this like it was yesterday.

Was the diesel engine working or was it there for braking?
@Tshasta444910 ай бұрын
There are 2 diesel’s on the UP train. They are there to act as helpers climbing the grade. They can use their dynamic breaking when going down grade. Also if the steam engine has an issue they can maneuver the train off the mainline
@craigroberts652710 ай бұрын
@@Tshasta4449 yeah I know. Was just wondering because the other steam engine was doing the deal all by itself.
@Tshasta444910 ай бұрын
@@craigroberts6527 The size of the train b makes a huge difference. 4449 has a lot smaller train. Both engines have similar tractive effort. That grade that they are climbing is over 2%,

Fun fact: both 4449 and 844 have top speeds over 100 MPH (4449's about 110 and 844 around 120), and without 4449's booster, have almost the same tractive effort. 100 might not seem that impressive, but consider these are giant hunks of metal with little to no traction on the rails, pulling long heavy trains. These things are absolute _beasts_
