I think everybody should start using MURS radios I live in southeast Wisconsin and haven't heard anything at all other than Walmart's and that's about it it would be so cool to be able to talk to people locally I monitor it all the time and none of the channels have any activity at all when in scan mode as I always get tired of those Garmin Astro dog collar things or whatever those things are making squats every few seconds which is highly annoying and that's another thing that's on there so it's hard to deal with that but that's what happens I guess for monitoring open carrier like I do just in case like I said if I hear anybody call for help or need assistance with anything as they're passing through such as travel directions and whatnot I'm always there to help hopefully I'll hear something someday soon

I've been a licensed GMRS users since the turn of the century and set up a community GMRS repeater that covers pretty much everywhere between my parents home and mine, about an 18 mile radius. I have a collection of Kenwood business/public safety radios that are built like tanks, are far higher quality than any chinese imports, and can legally be used on GMRS frequencies. I still own a bunch of MURS radios though. As you mentioned, almost nobody will be using the MURS frequencies unless you're next to a Walmart while it seems everybody has a set of FRS radios(same simplex frequencies as GMRS). MURS is also license free, so you can hand anybody a radio if need be just like FRS. Unlike the UV5r or other ham radio, it's much easier to keep radio illiterate users on 1 or 2 of the scant 5 channels rather than them wandering on to some random(potentially illegal) frequency. Lastly, 2w MURS radios do just as well in dense forest as 5w GMRS radios of similar quality due to the propagation characteristics of their lower frequencies.
@surprisecamping4 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment, those are all the reasons that I gravitated towards the MURS radios. I've had an amateur radio license for over 20 years now but the simplicity of only 5 channels is a benefit. Do you have a radio that you would recommend for MURS? I want to find some better quality radios that are preferably waterproof and ruggedized. I'll likely hand one to a friend while we're out hunting so they will likely get used in harsher environments.
@CzechSixTv3 күн бұрын
@@surprisecamping I've been running Retevis RT47V's with good luck. They're IP67 rated for water/dust and have also held up well to drops(some from speeding ATV's). The only potential down side is they use a Motorola M3 connector for speaker mics and programming instead of the more common Kenwood 2-pin. There are adapters available but they negate the IP67 rating. A $35 radio obviously won't have the sound quality and front end filtering of a Kenwood or Motorola, though they are comparable to a UV5r in that department.
@billbuyssilver765 күн бұрын
What is the approximate range on these?
@surprisecamping5 күн бұрын
A lot of that will depend on your terrain. I would say easily a mile or two in most environments. I probably wouldn't stretch these much more than 5 miles. The Wikipedia page linked below says you can get upwards of 10 miles. I would assume that in optimal conditions going from a higher peak to another high peak with nothing blocking you in between. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-Use_Radio_Service
@CzechSixTv4 күн бұрын
It's all going to come down to "line of sight" and ambient radio noise. If the transmitting and receiving antennas can see each other, and there aren't a bunch of people on the same frequencies, range across open flat terrain can easily be over 4 miles. If one user is up on a hill, with clear line of sight to the other user, range increases. Put a bunch of trees/building/hills in the way, range decreases. The one thing that really doesn't matter is 'power'. Power can let you be heard over other users within range, but how far your signal actually reaches isn't affected. Radio amateurs can bounce signals off repeaters on satellites or the ISS, a distance of over 200 miles, on just 5w because there is nothing in the way. Not even the curvature of the earth. Ground to ground, a 50w mobile radio is still limited by line of sight though.

@surprisecamping3 ай бұрын
True, for EDC I just carry a plain F-701 as it does write a bit nicer.
@LouisWinthorpe6224 ай бұрын
I would strongly advise going for the fine point refill when buying a Fisher SP refill for any pen. Not for aesthetic reasons, either. In my personal experience, and according to lots of other testimonies on YT, etc. the medium and bold are skiddy, thick, gummy pens to write with. I find bald patches when you are writing, extremely irritating. A deal breaker, in fact. I was just going to completely retire my Fisher AG7 for this reason but at the recommendations of many YT video reviewers and pen afficianados, I ordered a black, fine nib, refill and it's the only Fisher refill I've had that can actually write properly, without skipping a beat. I get that you'd want Fisher in an EDC for it's 'write on anything at any angle' ability, etc, but for a completely, out of this world, writing experience (see what I did there?) on paper, under normal conditions, try a Pentel pen with their Energel ink. I think the Pentel Energel X 0.7 is one of their cheapest and a respectable, retractable, pen. Best writing experience I've ever had. Remember that anything other than a fine tip Fisher writes pretty skippy and skiddy, sticky and bad. It's like writing with a pen full of mud but the fine nibs are totally, er, fine.
@surprisecamping4 ай бұрын
That is some great information, I mostly keep the pens with the space ink in my go bags but I carry a regular Z-701 in my EDC so I don't often get to write with the space ink.

I love the stones! I ordered them right away. I would probably cut back on the ferro rods and strikers to one each and add tender of some sort. Maybe a coil of jute twine. Then you have both tender and a little cordage. Also a Mcarmy small necklace compass. They’re quality compasses for their size. Lastly a small signal whistle. Too many people skip over this one. A national parks S&R guy I met once said one of the most important items most people miss is a survival whistle. He said they have dogs trained to hear whistles miles away from a human ear picking it up.

That empty water bottle is wasted space. You should fill a ziplock bag with more stuff and put it inside the bottle. When you need the bottle you can take out whatever in inside and stick it in the water bottle pocket and use a carabiner to clip the bottle to your pack or just carry it.

I've thought about putting stuff on the inside of the bottle but I never like the idea of having a baggie or something else hanging outside of the pack rattling around. A few more suggestions: ~ Compass. ~ Hand crank charger. ~ Hexamine fuel tablets. ~ Handheld laser. (Can be used for signalling, or even burning things if it's strong enough. Green might be the best color.)

- A compass isn't a bad idea and I'll likely add one. - Hand crank chargers are a real pain to use, maybe a power bank with a solar panel would be more efficient. - I've thought about throwing it in esbitt stove in here. - I've thought about adding a laser, I have a powerful green one at home already, there's not much use other than shining it in the sky at night time. I've done some testing at home by aiming it straight up and waving it around and it's not visible from even a short distance away (1 mile) I've had lasers that can burn things and they honestly scare me. I'm more worried about going blind than anything. A lighter would be far safer for lighting a fire.

I think the gun, ammo, multi-tool, lighter, notepad, pen, flashlight and some other odds and ends should be carried on the body in your pockets or on a belt. Unless you think you'll be surprised and chased by an angry bear while skinny dipping in a river in the woods, there's no reason for them to be separate. There are several brands of collapsable water bottles that can save you some space if you want to carry the bottle empty and fill it later. A lot of this stuff can also be carried in a jacket with a lot of pockets, which might be handier than an actual bag. Things worth adding might be a good quality but small survival knife with a full tang and sheath, 1 pair of socks, and a tourniquet.

Other than that, ditto on better poncho. Thanks Also, I think your bag is less noticeable over backpack. Like that
@surprisecamping8 ай бұрын
I only recently replaced my phone after about 5 years and the battery in that phone died very quickly. I was constantly tethered to a battery. Yes, once both my phone and battery are dead then that's it for them, but if that portable battery gets me a full extra charge and that full extra charge last me several hours then it might just be enough to allow me to make an important phone call. Even if all it's good for is to allow me to use the flashlight on my phone and that would still be worth it. A phone can also be used to take pictures for memory and documentation, I can take notes on it, and a flashlight obviously. I agree on the Pancho, I've already found one that I like and I've used it several times in the heavy rain down here in the southeast US, that will be going in the next version of this pack.
