I agree with Bruce. The show is a loss-leader, and it is with all the tie-in stuff Bethesda did where the ROI is made. It did not have to be "good", just "good enough" to get people to buy the games and dlc.

I've said it before, Todd Howard is a guy with gimmicky ideas that games sacrifice far too much to fully realize. Fallout 76 sacrificed NPCs so that every person you meet would be another player, Starfield sacrificed any kind of satisfying storyline or origin for the artifacts so that you can have a NG+ gimmick that locks the story into a time loop that never ends and probably breaks the universe, fallout 4 sacrificed having likable characters likely because Todd had a kid and wanted the main character to look for his stupid kid. He made Skyrim, that's his big achievement. Why do we worship him?

I like Todd Howard and I think the company is where it’s at today (both good and bad) because of his leadership. I think many years ago the company would have went belly up without him and his push to do something different and unique (at that time). But I will say he’s made several bad decisions over the last 10 years , really since after Fallout 4 and onward. Starfield was a resource hog that wasted not only resources but 8 years of dev time. 8 years in which the other IPs ( Fallout and TES) have really been neglected (unless you’re part of the very vocal minority that like Fallout 76 and all the Skyrim remasters)

Todd needs to stop having a say about every single thing. I get he's passionate, I respect it, but I'd like to be able to play The Elder Scrolls VI before I'm 50. I'm 25 right now. I was 12 when Skyrim came out.

This is odd, about how Todd can say "no". I remember a Bethesda dev saying recently something in the line of all devs can add things they want, to the point they kind of lose control of the game's scope. I wonder what changed...

I dont respect tod because he's letting his ego get in the way of progress. He won't let anyone else toch the elder scrolls or fallout ip and it's infuriating. It fucking sucks having to wait 10 years for the next fucking game because you won't let other studios toch the ip. And then how he double talks about remasters "we don't like doing remasters" even tho they will rerelease skyrim 500 times on every platform known to man. LET ME PLAY FALLOUT 3 AND HAVE IT RUN PROPERLY ON PC LIKE HOLLY FUCK TOD

For all the people with short memory span that use the argument that players have short memory span and remember only F76 and Starfield.. yeah he made some great games in the past, he is adored by some of his coworkers but let's not forget that he was also a guy that pushed for microtransactions in games, he was the guy that rereleased Skyrim a 100 times, as they talk about the core gaming experience I feel that the core purpose of a producer like Todd is to make great games and the biggest two attempts at that were rather bad. So a decade of bad games vs the past. Since the Indiana Jones and the chamber of secrets is apparently a great game, maybe he will be redeemed.

Totally right, Todd made some great decisions, like reselling Skyrim with new labels but with subpar changes for full box prices. That made bethesda a lot of money, but that money clearly wasn't used to build whatever Starfield is.

36:01 As a game studio, trying to develop a game while updating the game engine software is like juggling two watermelons in one hand-impossible without dropping something! Updating a game engine demands a dedicated team, significant resources, and a ton of money, making it a Herculean task to simultaneously develop a game. Each endeavor requires unwavering focus and immense effort. It's wiser to tackle one challenge at a time!

I like Todd and I think the amount of focused hate he gets is stupid, but I would like to see some public acknowledgement of the shortcomings their games have developed over the years in a way that makes it clear he understands them. Like when they're asked about Starfield and they say stuff like "oh the vast majority of feedback has been positive!", it feels like they're sticking their heads in the sand, which in turn leaves me pessimistic that the systemic issues are going to be rectified. I actually enjoyed Starfield overall, but there's so many clear, obvious problems at the core of how it was designed - some are unique to Starfield, but some have been carried forward across multiple BGS games now, such as the bad writing, or some of the stark limitations of their game engine. In the case of Starfield, the sheer number of loading screens is absurd, and speaks to their issues seamlessly streaming interiors and exteriors - even just small shops in a town will often have their own separate interior cell load. This is stuff they have to resolve, rather than just brute forcing more out of their tools with better and better hardware. I'm not going to say they should ditch their engine or fire Emil or whatever, because I think gamers are flippant and ignorant with understanding these problems as outsiders looking in. But regardless of whether we understand the problems - problems they remain.
@evanwhite28452 күн бұрын
I agree with you, all the hate and pessimism is pretty dumb. I wish that Bethesda was more transparent and honest with their marketing, but it’s also kind of inevitable that it would become this bad given how big the company is and their association with Microsoft. I don’t think Todd is to blame for any of that.
