Hey mate, we've had both L300 and L400s in Australia since they were new- L300 4d56t any day over any version of the L400 (apart from not having airbags😂) The 4m40s are notorious for weak heads that warp and crack, you WILL have issues with it, the oem alloy they used is pretty much made of cheese. Every wreckers here always has one or 2 in the yard. The L400 has a quater more weight to it, theyre not bad off road but serious off road the L300 will leave it behind at the bottom of a gully. The L300 is pretty much the 80s pajero running gear and chassis with a van body. They were winning Paris- Dakar with that setup back then. Definitely intercool it and slap a vt16 variable geometry turbo on it, cheap kw and way less lag. You either have a Km145 or V5M21 gear box, better being the later as they were updated and stronger. They are interchangable. Mechanical 50/50 with solid diffs and lockers or lsd are proven and reliable for serious off roading. Belts only snap when you dont do maintenance and replace them -which your supposed to do- chains stretch and can break also. The rattling means its stretched, also means you probs have metal shavings and chain guide plastic bits all through your motor. Oil pumps love it *NEVER tow anything up a gradient in 5th, it will blow the gearbox Enjoy the tin cans❤

I can't find one anywhere... My parents had a 220 when I was a kid so I kinda wanted one for the nostalgia but once I started doing my research I wanted one because they're fantastic and durable cars.

I'd buy a Volvo 240, but a nice one cost 100k-150k NOK which for that money I could get 2-3 good cars of another brand

To clarify the transfer cases between the L300 and the L400, in the L300 is a basic or "standard" transfer case, meaning the front/rear run at a fixed, constant, ratio. in contrast, the L400 has a differential in the transfer case, which is open by default but can be locked. that differential in the transfer case means the 4WD can be used on dry pavement (and shifted on the fly), the front and rear wheel speed can vary. It's the same difference between the American market Montero Sport (L300 style) and the Montero Full size (L400 style) (the open center diff is the "super select").

Not sure about the Volvo's, but I've had a couple vehicles where the problem turned out to be the coolant temp sensor and they rarely trigger the check engine light even though they're monitored by the ECM. I sell auto parts, and when I have customers who are chasing these sort of problems and they don't know which way to go, I'll tell them if they have to guess and start throwing money, buy the coolant sensor first. Super likely.

I'm having an issue where the exhaust is hanging too low and I can't figure out how to mount the exhaust pipe without it being too high with the OEM O-rings where the front silencer would normally go and hitting potholes in New England have caused it to shift and the back pin on the rear silencer is hitting the frame. Trying to toert that out next. Any tips anyone?? I'm a noob Volvo lover trying to keep her beast happy and clean!

Absolute legend mate. Loving the video. You are spot on in the fact there are no videos in english for this. I struggled 3 years ago to do the water pump and boy was it a head scratcher with no help and a crap after market manual. I found a step by step pdf which helped. Really glad you made this and ignore those people asking it’s not the correct way. You’re a driveway mechanic like most of us old car owners 😎 just use whatever to get it done 👌. I dont suppose you have a parts list? The waterpump i put on is now leaking and i want to do the timing belt/seals too whilst im in there. I have the timing belt kit but the other list would be appreciated. Love your commentry too, very honest and reminded me of my swearing fun i had doing this 😂 peace from the UK 🤙

Only other bit of advice I would throw in is make sure you always go with high quality parts when you replace sensors, etc. Bosch is best, aftermarket can be very shotty especially with sensors.
