It is so refreshing to see a young man like yourself interested in this kind of craft. I've restored many old cast iron pots and skillets. You did a fine job on this one with the vinegar and I know how long that takes. Over my many years I've resorted to a plastic tub with about 5 to 7 gallons of water in it with two cans of plumbers lye dissolved in the water. In about 48 hours my iron pieces are clean as a hound's tooth. I wash them real good in hot soapy water and dry them completely. In the oven they go to bask in a balmy 450 degrees for a half hour. I them wipe them down with a good oil like avocado or just plain canola. Back in that oven for an hour or more, then turn off the oven and let them cool by themselves inside that cooling-down oven until they and the oven are at room temperature. You can repeat this about three times for a great seasoning. Sure can't argue with your results. Nice job! NOTE: THE PLUMBER'S LYE IS NOT A SAFE PRECEDURE. LYE IS A CAUSTDIC SODA AND WILL CAUSE BURNS ON YOUR SKIN IF YOU DON'T PROTECT YOURSELF WITH HIGH RUBBER GLOVES. BE VERY CAREFUL AND CAUTIOUS. EVEN WITH GOVES ON I REMOVED THE IRON PIECES WITH A STEEL HOOK. DO THIS OUTSIDE - NOT IN THE HOUSE OR GARAGE. WHEN I DO THIS IT'S USULLY WITH FOUR OR MORE IRON PIECES. DON'T BE ALONE WHEN DOING THIS. HAVE A FRIEND WITH YOU. I'M A RETIRED FIREFIGHTER WITH HAZ-MAT CERTIFICATION FROM GEORGIA TECH.

I was given new cast iron pots and pan. I attempted to season them, but when I pulled them from the oven, I had a small pool of oil in the bottom. I did what the recogmendation was, a light coating of oil in and out, but ended up with that. I had no idea how to fix it. Any answers that you might have would be so appreciated.

When my wife and I were first married I came home from work one day and she had scrubbed half of my cast iron pans down to bare metal. She was so proud of herself!

I would also put the Mk14 EBR into consideration, since it's compact for close quarters, but can also shoot very far

When finding an old iron skillet like that, first order of business is to check the bottom and make sure it don't have "Made In China" stamped into it...if it does, no need to proceed any further..if not, resurrect it!...

How long has this been available? Seems like a candidate for Ruger to file a lawsuit against, like they did with the incredible AMT stainless steel 10/22 clone years back. What a sad day that was.

This is very wholesome. That foam was a bit nightmarish. But I can see the appeal in doing this. I just ordered a cast iron pan. Not sure I’ll be able to lift it but I wanna be part of the fun.

Vinegar rules when it come to getting out the rust. I have used it on cast iron and tools for years. I rely on the grill at 450 to 550 to burn off seasoning and grunge. I slowly raise the temp and then leave on high for an hour ' then leave it to cool with lid shut. Then wipe or blow away the ashes to reveal some great treasures.

It's important to try this food out, as in eating it for one day and see how it does with your digestive system. Datrex bars are easier on me, and that's the most important thing for me. You might want to start small and work up to it.
