Heh for steering the torpedos, then again I'm reminded of a toy shooting game that was similar to this. All mechanical with a faux-digital appearance. And the whole mechanism the shots were on in that game would rotate with your aim.

My first visit to an "arcade" was in 1975 when I was 9 years old. It was in a building next to an auction house my dad would go to every Friday, back in the day when a 5 year old could go off on his own for the day without fear of being kidnapped or worse. The interior walls were that old blackboard used to build houses, decorated with neon painted psychedelic imagery, and black lighting along with regular to highlight the artwork. It was filled with every game of the period, electromechanical pinball, air hockey and pool tables, a jukebox that always seemed to play "Fox on the Run" or "Take it to the Limit" every other song. The only "video" game was a cocktail table featuring "TANK", the original Atari tank battle game. You could actually control what was happening on a television screen. For a 9 year old at that time, this was AMAZING! All of the other machines though were electromechanical, and everything cost one dime. I remember playing this specific game among many others, and I have to say it was at least as much fun for me as many of the later, early "video" games, as these had a more tactile feel to them. If I could have a dream arcade, it would probably be filled with mostly electromechanical games.

@StusGameReviews They were WWI planes. It must have been very rare. It was really old and worn when I was playing it in the late 60s or early 70s. It was my introduction to electric games. After looking at it closely I could see that there were two little model airplanes in it. But it took me quite awhile to realize that.

God, the memories! My first arcade as a kid in the 70's had this, and some games that were actual computerized video games. That young, I t didn't occur to me how different these kinds of games were. I distantly recall how on some electromechanical games, you just FELT the vibrations, clicks, and knocks of things happening inside the game, in a way you didn't on most computerized games.

Played this once back in the day (operative word being "once") in the late 70's/early 80's. Too hard to control and the illumination on the cabinet I played was too dim to see anything.

I definitely agree it's hard to control...

At first I thought it was funny that the machine has to specify that it's a game of skill, but then I realized that, because of how it works, it could technically be a gambling game.
@StusGameReviews9 күн бұрын
I think this is a holdover from the days when organized crime controlled gambling machines and they were banned from some places, so yeah, they had to specify it was a game of skill, not of chance...

@StusGameReviews Yes. When I think back at what they had now they'd be priceless. There was a saloon shooting gallery with a pistol that fired steel balls at targets. A vintage baseball pinball machine that launched the ball from the pitchers mound and you batted. And a lot of stuff probably mostly from the 40s and 50s.

The very early video games had HORRIBLE controls, not because they couldn't make better controls, but because they couldn't make very challenging games. Computer Space was quite trivial, if it didn't have horrible controls.
@StusGameReviews10 күн бұрын
That is a very interesting perspective...you think they made the controls bad on purpose? Maybe...
@fuzzywzhe10 күн бұрын
@@StusGameReviews Something was needed to get the player to lose and put in another quarter. There were a few games that had what I think were intentionally bad controls, the first Astroids used 5 buttons. From left to right it was, rotate left, rotate right, hyperspace, thrust, fire.
@StusGameReviews9 күн бұрын
@@fuzzywzhe I hear what you're saying. I always assumed though that they hadn't figured it out yet. But you could be right...

A rudder is a hinged control surface at the very back of a plane or boat. In a plane it's usually controlled using your feet, on "rudder pedals". The hand controls on a planes are usually a "stick", or in this case, a "yoke".
