I mow the leaves with the bagger on the mower. This reduces the volume of the leaves and jump starts their decomposition.

I'm going to spend fall cleaning my collection of old pots, and bury my herbs in them! I've been wishing for a way to keep my herbs from spreading and did put some in pots, but never thought to bury the pot! AND fantastic idea of supporting plants with a bottomless pot!

Every fall, I'm amazed to see all my neighbors bagging up every last leaf in their yard, only for the city to come along with a big smelly diesel truck and haul them away. I stopped raking well over ten years ago when I realized what a great resource leaves are. Also, considering the fact that top soil everywhere is washing away, it's such a shame people throw out the very thing that can help rebuild it in their yard.

I geow from seed I harvest, I grow some for sets and generally save 200 sets and top and bottom them. I grow some solely for seed and collect the flower heads abd collect the seeds and I have only bought onions as seeds once as they produce so many seeds from one flower. I grow some in home made wooden troughs which have sided designed to have triple wall polycarbonate over them to form a miniature greenhouse and protect them in winter.

YES👍☮️❤Thankyou for raking! There were some statistics about (early) Cornish women having the lowest UK heart attack rates from sweeping the cobbles daily!... They're big on the raucous phallic (dispersing!) leaf blowers here..."Mayte ya gave me a heart attack: and failed to protect yourself against one" machismo v's mindful

How all this people doing no till,compost,ferments and do not have any fungus gnats ? I have companies plants at home and they are full of fungus gnats 😢😂
@GrowVeg8 сағат бұрын
I think the general health of Charles' soil, and the fact it drains through well because of its structure, ensures fewer fungus gnats (and other pests).

Thank you for showing us round your garden, Mr Muggleton. I’m about to do something similar with our garden. Old garden; new gardener. It’s daunting. Particularly as our garden is currently very attractive, with flower borders, lawn, rockeries and established (non productive) shrubs etc… I want to turn it into a veg plot. I also don’t want to lose the “grand view” along the entire length of the burgage plot. I’ll have to work on my plans all winter 😊

Ben your channel was recommended this morning you do seem to be my sort of person not taking life too serious. I also dance in the leaves right down the road I’m 70, so I can do what I like I don’t have to bother about what other people think so I am very lucky, I do have one problem with my little backyard I’ve had to stop feeding the birds pulled up the wooden decking and also I was told not to make my own compost because a rat, comes in to the garden usually about twice a year l live in a row of terraced houses and the gardens back onto each other . I do like to use leaf compost. The only thing is I don’t want to leave a bag about and I have thought that maybe I could dig small holes and put leaves in there and then put lots of leaves on the little borders, but I don’t know whether that will do any good I’m fed up with the whole thing to be honest I used to love watching the birds and being kind to the soil, any advice would be helpful while writing this l think l will go back to feeding the birds in the winter still would value your advice. I am dyslexic just in case l write something wrong bye from Lynda happy leafing 😊
@GrowVegКүн бұрын
Hi Lynda. You could make a hole for your leaves, or simply add your collected leaves around actively growing plants to let them break down into the soil naturally, over time. I don't think composting attracts rats - only if you add lots of cooked food, bread and other things they may eat. But composting just garden-derived materials should be absolutely fine. :-)
