my dad got sick this fall and said he won't be making his usual garden, at least this year so here i am, at 23 studying my ass off trying to learn as much as possible to make him a surprise and ready to get to work in about 2 weeks, i've been binge watching your videos with a notebook (and already started my basil indoors) and want to thank you for everything you taught me! ready to start tomatoes cucumbers potatoes onions peas zucchini peppers and lettuce! edit: thanks a lot for the tips and encouraging words, it means a lot! dad is fine, he just took a gap year to heal properly
@MeNotYou72Ай бұрын
Built my beds from his videos from scratch and had a beautiful garden for the past three years. Don't stress, just learn and honor the process like you honor your dad. Don't cut corners on things like pollinators, and companion plants you think may not be worth it, because they so are. Know what pest issues he's had in the past, and you're at a fantastic head start!
@abaddon2148Ай бұрын
Remember to water and fertilise every 1-2 weeks depending on plant (onions may need more often) and that'll pretty much set you up for success👍 The greatest failures I've had in gardening are from missing one or both of those two things. Good luck and God Bless.

I am busy learning now. I was not madly interested in gardening when younger. My mom was the gardener and I regret not having learnt from her before she passed on. I'm in my late 60's and my advice to younger people is to learn as much as you can from parents and grandparents. They have survived wars and the great depression. We face heat waves, no water and no electricity at intervals and I wish my survival skills were as good as theirs. Love these videos.

I have my garden plotted out, and all seeds on hand. January 3, 2025 kicks off my seed starting. I m going to start with onions, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. Then move on to tomatoes, peppers, mustard, chard, pak choi, basil, dill, cilantro, Romaine Lettuce, and assorted flowers. I have a lot of seeds that I'll be direct sowing between Feb 15-20, shelling peas, snow peas, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, turnips, assorted leaf lettuce, and more. Despite the cold, my garden is still going. I just harvested broccoli today, and will have more ready in a few days. I have red cabbage, chard, carrots, beetroot, and parsnips that I need to harvest. Three of four hens have started laying eggs. I got three so far this morning, and expect one more. With the price of eggs in the US, that makes me rich. LOL. Rural Alabama, zone 7A.

Fennel is a huge one for me this year, I have it dotted through the garden in any wee gaps (kiwi so mid growing season here) but even in season, it's easily $4 a bulb for a very small bulb half the size of what I grow 😂 saves so much money and fills in all the wee gaps. I even have it interplanted with daffy bulbs which have gone for the year 😂

For the new gardeners out there: listen to Ben on locating your garden as close as possible to a water source. We started a neighborhood garden on some land under power lines last year. Excellent sun exposure (due to no trees under those power lines) BUT closest water source is 400 feet away. Maintaining 400 feet of hose is a nightmare! So many leaks and possible points of failure. Plus, having the garden that far away makes it feel like a real chore to go down there to check on plants (and pests!). Learn from our mistake!

Good morning Ben, as enthusiastic as ever, and that does us the viewers the world of good. I have a row of hydrangeas growing on the west side of the house, they have been there since we moved in and every summer those beautiful flowers get burned from the sun, and this year with our drought it was even worse. So I have decided to remove them, I will just cut them back low to the soil and lift them into containers, then I can use that for a focus point where and when I wish to. It has been a most delightful gardening class for me watching your videos this year, I am sure you will bless us with more tips and ideas for the year 2025. Most winter squashes and pumpkins sprawl, so can easily be trained up supports. They don't really burn on the arches as they tend to shade their supports as they grow, keeping things a bit cooler.

I have experimented with all of those flowers except Poached egg plant and calendula. Borage just doesn't do well for me for some reason. Have you tried cosmos? I grow the zinnia and cosmos together as they get to be similar heights. Bees go for the cosmos and butterflies go for the zinnias. I grown them in a central ring garden where my beds are all around the outside. I finally got nastiurtium to take this year. I had good luck with both giant orange marigolds and smaller french lemon drop marigolds around my tomato plants. I grew cucumbers up my sunflowers and this spring I'm going to add runner beans, sweet peas, cucumber up the sunflowers with the alyssum around the edges of the beds.

Your local weather station will be what the sowing dates are based on. However, if you are in a particularly cold micro climate then it may be prudent to add an extra two weeks on to err on the side of caution.

Hello, out of interest, where did you get your metal arches for your garden??
@jaytoney3007Ай бұрын
There are a lot of options Lowes, Tractor Supply, and many local feed & seed stores sell sixteen foot sections of cattle panel. Fold it over, and you have an arched tunnel. Make it as long as you want by adding more sections. If this is bigger than what you need, go to the cement section of your local hardware store, and look for ladder bar. It is about ten inches wide, and likewise folded over into an arch. You can space them together, or in intervals apart, putting them where ever they are needed.

Does the garden planner take into consideration a poor growing year like last summer? With regards to follow on crops if the first crop is weeks behind the usual growing time

It is based on average growing conditions for your area. You can enter the in-ground dates for each crop, with the option to err on the side of caution if you wish to allow for potentially inclement conditions.

I have a big problem. I have a garden that's about 100ft x 25ft. It's been overgrown since the 1980s. Exactly halfway along the length is a slope where a stone wall collapsed. The level on the left side is about 4ft lower than the right. I can't afford to have it landscaped but I want to make it all into an attractive vegetable, fruit and wildlife garden. In spring and summer the banking gets overgrown with weeds, mainly buttercups, nettles and dandelions. It's difficult to use the cardboard & mulch method because it just falls to the lowest level. What can I do? I was thinking about using some natural hessian over it and planting low growing cotoneaster because they're good for wildlife and act as a natural weed suppressant but I was wondering if there's a vegetable that I could grow on that banking. Thanks in anticipation.
@jaytoney3007Ай бұрын
I live on sloped land, so don't see it as a major concern. In fact, there are benefits that you can use to your advantage. Here is what I would do. Make rows, hilling up the soil, so the rows are about a foot wide with one foot spacing between them. The rows need to be perpendicular to the slope of the land. This minimizes erosion. The rows elevate the plant roots, so they aren't submerged in water after a heavy rain. The slope of the land expedites drainage. This is a crop saver. As for what type of vegetables you can grow, well, just about anything. Rural Alabama, one 7A.

I am working with limited space in my small garden, with one main area that gets full sun. I’ve been reading about crop rotation and am considering it since I battled leaf blight for the first time this summer on my tomatoes. How do you rotate crops when you’re working with unlimited space? Also, to all my experienced gardeners, is crop rotation even necessary? I’m having a hard time determining where to put my tomatoes this year since they need full sun. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
@GrowVegАй бұрын
To rotate crops in a limited space the best thing you can do is to simply avoid growing crops from the same crop family (e.g. Brassicas) in the same piece of ground two seasons running. If you can leave a gap - any gap - of time that will really help, especially with more vulnerable crops. Blight is mostly carried on the wind, but if you can grow those tomatoes in a new area next time round that would be a sensible precaution. This video may offer a few more pointers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGW8kqOdg5t6aNksi=FKBBL8fTXprKjWS8

Did anyone else have a bad time with their garden last year? I was over run (literally) with slugs, tried repellant, copper tape, beer traps but nothing could get a handle on them there were just too many. They ate everything 😢 im going to try again this year

Bwah ha ha, I have lettuce, spinach, pak choi, a random store bought onion and leeks growing in mid summer 40c, cause Ill be damned if I ever plan anything! They've all bolted but that's not the point, its the principle of the thing. I will bend nature to my god like will!!

Sorry Ben, crop rotation is so important if you grow brassicas due to club root, tomato/potato physild and lettuce aphids are all reduced by rotation.

Yes, definitely worth rotating crops if you can. :-)

We don’t sell seeds or bulbs. There are so many great sites out there to buy them from. I mainly use Kings Seeds.
