Mr Zappa proposes a future where USA will be a fascist theocracy, meaning based on christian legislature. That's exactly what he suggests. In my opinion the exact opposite has happened. The USA is more socialistic than ever before, with the government "taking care" of the citizens at an increasing rate. All big tech companies are strongly left leaning and suppresses free speech. Don't get me started on LBGTBlabla, that is not exactly what the bible prescribes right? So, who "won"?

This was incredible. This was basically a MAGA on a panel, outshouting and trying to intimidate Zappa while at the same time refusing to actually listen because HIS view was what "SHOULD BE DONE" . This is like watching Florida in action with the book burnings. Amazing how almost prophetic Zappa was here and how calm he was in the face of demagoguery.

@chriscasady9108

Exactly! LOL. Zappa even says so at 4:45 LOL! That's all made up by his debaters in a classic "projection" psychology. They are jealous of someone in their imagination having incest so they project it on someone else. To the degree that incest exists, it stems from something other than song lyrics. These guys are perverts and blaming Frank for it.

Zappa is too arrogant and doesn't realize that putting out garbage songs has a massively bad impact on people;s minds, especially youngsters. He's just advocating unequivocal freedom of speech and not realizing that sometimes that freedom doesn't come with good taste or intelligence of thought.
@ChrisCasadyanimation
@ChrisCasadyanimation Ай бұрын
By that definition our culture puts out a lot of garbage in the form of tv shows, movies, games, not just songs that could have a “massively bad impact on people’s minds, especially youngsters.” Much media without taste or intelligence is circulating out there. It’s hard to legislate culture, although the MAGA Republican Party would like to even ban books. Frank seems to have predicted this very moment 30 years ago. Here we are again having culture wars. Where and how to draw the line? This debate seems to be eternal, coming around regularly.
@JJ-ne6wd
@JJ-ne6wd Ай бұрын
@@ChrisCasadyanimation Our culture definitely puts out a lot of garbage in various forms. Totally agree with that. I mean, there’s tons of immoral and barbarous nonsense in religious books too, ironically. I know morality is subjective in certain ways and individual people or compartmentalized religions have their own ways of maintaining moral principles and ethics, but I see Lofton’s point as valid: how on earth can you justify incestuous songs? How would Zappa feel if his kids were listening to incestuous songs and enjoying it? If incest is wrong, which it is, why even make music that glorifies it? Doesn’t that reveal a lack of artistic taste, good moral sense and values? I believe good content matters, good values matter. In this particular video, I understand his point. We are arguing about words. But what I don’t understand is how Zappa doesn’t seem to understand the point that words DO have emotional and actional power. What if his kids called him motherfucker instead of dad? What if his kids were uttering profanities like it was nothing? Would he really be happy listening to all that? Take the example of drugs. He was staunchly anti-drug which is very interesting considering the fact that he was addicted to one of the more potent, fatal drugs: nicotine and tobacco. So, his views on drugs at times can be hypocritical or even contradictory. How was he not anti-tobacco when it’s worse than marijuana or mushrooms? But what if his kids were doing drugs and glorifying it in songs? How would he feel then? Wasn’t he morally objecting to drug use? He never allowed his band members to take drugs either. I understand his point. The folks that are writing about drugs, let’s say, are just writing about that which they are already doing. And there’s a market or audience for that: those drug users. So, if they are already doing it, why not talk about it and make money off of it? From a business POV, I totally get it and it makes sense. But from a moral standpoint, how is that correct to talk about harmful substances just to make money off of it? This is a losing argument and I understand that. But I get this idea that Zappa was a very arrogant, self-righteous, smart-aleck type of guy who always thought he was right about everything. He was truly articulate, had a great voice, was creative and intellectual, but his views on censorship are very shallow and unreasonably stubborn. Would the majority of the sane public want their kids listening to songs which glorify violence, murder, incest, rape, etc.?

@@JJ-ne6wd First of all - a year after the originally aired, this fight was effectively lost, hence the labels and edited versions of songs/albums. Secondly, you completely missed the bit that starts in at about 10mins in this video where Zappa points out the danger posed when the government starts legislating per a particular religious ideology. And as noted - one that is radically right wing.

He's NOT advocating for incest itself - the "act" thereof, but rather he's advocating for free speech and for your first amendment rights! There is a difference! Artists (or really anyone across the board) have a right to sing or talk about incest and/or certain sexual topics if they so choose, and you yourself as the consumer have a right not to buy or listen to the records.
