On paper this film is boring. The storyline seems cliché and parts of it seem overtly melodramatic. But man, watch it for yourself and you’ll see why this is dubbed as one of the most iconic and heartbreaking film in Korean cinema. A Moment to Remember (2004)

This is not at all the type of film I gravitate towards but this was beyond worth the watch. Don’t let the dull colours sway you! It’s a film about pure and precious affection despite one of the most difficult times in Chinese history. It’s also based on a true story. If you’re interested in a depiction of the cultural revolution - give it a shot (with a tissue box next to you 😭). Themes: Romance, Youth, Tearjerker, Cultural Revolution, First Love, True Story Movie: Under The Hawthorn Tree (2010)

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. What a person desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble. Proverbs 19:21-23. Parasite (2019) by Bong Joon-ho.

This movie is complex and multifaceted but wow, this is not only one of my favourite films of 2023 but my all-time favourite Studio Ghibili movie. Visually, it is outstanding and the story telling wise it is captivating. It’s hard to explain the movie because I probably don’t even know it fully myself - but (generally) it’s about a boy named Mahito who ventures into a dreamlike world shared by both the living and the dead. Before watching the movie, it helped that I was reminded that Miyazaki doesn’t follow the traditional story arc of an intro climax and resolution. The fact that it was an allegory of Miyazaki’s life, knowing the real thought he puts into his work and the fact that it took 7 years to make, was all evident in the finished product. The contextual motifs of the blocks as his Miyazaki’s 13 films, the parakeets as brain-dead people who follow the majority, capitalism and the commercialisation of animation, the birth room and the whole movie being about his legacy etc… This movie was just ingeniously designed to keep you asking the question - "How Do You Live?" which was its original title.

Past Lives “the A24 hit”. I think I have an unpopular take on this because I did not enjoy it. If you haven’t heard about it, it’s about two deeply connected childhood friends who are reunited after 20 years and are confronted with their love and destiny. It’s mainly about Nora who is riffed with finding her identity as a Korean American. People raved about this movie, so I had high expectations but unfortunately was let down after watching it. Aesthetically, it’s not a bad film but the characters felt underdeveloped, and I especially didn’t like how the whole theme of the movie felt like a license for infidelity. As a young adult who moved countries as a kid, I expected to at least remotely relate to the story, but I just felt uncomfortable and so so bad for the husband while watching it. But what do you think?

YiYi is a Taiwanese film written and directed by Edward Yang. It’s a movie about romance and life by following 1 family and each of its members in Taipei apart from the mum. The movie gives insight into each stage of life through a wedding, baby shower and eventual funeral. There are so many parallels, commentaries on social constructs and just so many things I loved about it. But what was most memorable was that although there had always been a life slowly depreciating away in the background, I, as the viewer was also caught up in the character’s’ affairs that I, like the characters, had forgotten about the impending death. I especially liked little Yang Yang’s character but there are also things I didn’t like such as the emotional infidelity that kind of happens.

Ponyo is a light-hearted feel-good movie that is just enjoyable. I think Miyazaki’s creativity, artistry and child-like thinking is well encapsulated in this movie

To The Wonder is a mini-series from the essay collection “我的阿勒泰”. It’s about a Chinese Han girl, who returns to Altay after her failing in the big city. It tells a story about life, family dynamics, human fragility, cultural traditions, family values and country-side living. Watching it was a beautiful experience and I especially appreciated the theme of intentional living - that you don’t have to chase riches or reputational jobs to have a satisfying, meaningful life. I was also captivated by the Kazakh culture and the ending had me so shocked that my hand literally covered my mouth! Every character had meaningful story to tell, and I hope this drama sets the path for more directors, dramas and movies to explore this genre further! There was one idyllic scene where she just goes to the field and lies down. That was quite memorable and a few days later, I was reminded me of Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Visualising those verses through this film was helpful.

This is a hard one. This movie was about a guy who migrates to Hong Kong from China, hoping to earn enough money to marry his girlfriend back home. But, he meets Qiao. They become friends. Then their friendship turns into a deeper love. I just cant look past the movie’s main theme of unfaithfulness. But, there were other aspects of the movie I appreciated - my dad moved from Australia to Hong Kong to look for a job, like xiaojun, around the same time the movie was filmed. It was so cool to see the streets, people, environment and culture to get a brief glimpse into my dad’s time in HK. Also, the Chinese name for this movie is “Tian MiMi” which is in reference to Teresa Teng’s song. Teresa Teng was this huge cultural icon in East Asia (I would say she was as impactful as Michael Jackson in the west). I like Teresa Teng songs, and because she is so integrated into the movie (from them singing along to her music, to them having a shop selling her cassettes), I think I am a little biased.
