They needed to post Billy Cobham in his prime with Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1972 live. No one had that power and speed, and still don´t. Look up some of those videos here on KZbin. No comparison!!! :) Also, as much as I like Tony Royster, Billy was an innovator, and influenced generations of drummers. He definitely influenced Dennis Chambers. :)

Ok, RND #3 was a bit more fair. But, there are better videos of Cobham from those concerts in 72. RND #4 was also great!!! And Tony can´t play Jazz nearly as well as Billy. Billy was #1 for CTI Records before he got busy with his solo projects. After that, Steve Gadd took over at CTI Records.

He should expect to have at most 20 outs (vs. a top pair, no spade, which wasn't impossible on these tables), and at the very least 8 (vs. 5x8s or 5x2s). Not sure if he ever expects to be ahead here, but if he never expects to be ahead, he would need 17-18 outs to make it a profitable call, I think? If he expects to be ahead vs. other draws and mad bluffs a small portion of the time, that would change that quite a bit. He could of course be high, but he's probably just slightly insane.

many many many many many many many levels deeper than you think about the game, durrrrrr got coolered in that hand. I'll let you in on a secret, no had has less then 5.75% equity vs aces pre flop and no hand you would ever play back with that is not a bluff holds 10% or more. The game is realizing and denying equity. your holdings are irrelevant beyond the equity in the present hand

Yes it was poker, I'm always amazed how people with no results in the game criticize the play of those who have them and dismiss it as bad play instead of trying to understand what things they did well to get to the level they did regardless of if the stayed or faded away. It does however put a huge smile on my face to know that poker is alive and well :)

@Oneness100 7 жыл бұрын
Funny thing. I have no albums with Royster on them, but I've got plenty of "must have" albums with Cobham on them. Cobham's been on countless legendary jazz/fusion albums and Royster hasn't been on a single one...
@ZZDROSS
@ZZDROSS 7 жыл бұрын
Yes....thats something to think about:) respect to mr Cobham...he has been a mentor to a lot of drummers world wide.... To say one musician is better etc is actually meaningless.... But we are living now, and Tony bring in something new and fresh,...hip hopish funkyrocknrollafusion punk :)
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 7 жыл бұрын
Zzdross Yeah, which is why Tony doesn't get hired by the major jazz recording artists. Tony had chops, but to be honest, that doesn't make him an equal to Cobham in terms of musicianship. Cobham has written a vast amount of compositions, has been on countless jazz/fusion recordings and is seen as the biggest name in fusion drumming, which is essentially what he really pioneered to a higher level than anyone else. Every drummer essentially copies a lot of Cobham fills, ideas, etc. Look the use of Octobans, Gong drums, inverted China type as a main ride cymbal, ambidextrous drumming. He's had a long standing career as a solo artist, composer, band member, and season player. Tony Royster has had a long standing career more as a clinician showing chops to kids in music stores, but has only been a touring drummer for the Hip Hop world, and has ZERO credibility in the jazz/fusion world. I see Royster more as a novelty act and Cobham a true master musician that has a lot more meaning behind his playing. Who is McCoy Tyner, John McLaughin, Herbie Hancock going to call? Cobham or Royster? Nuff said. Royster has lots of chops, but chops doesn't necessarily mean better musicianship because the chops have to translate with the music so it's more musical. There are tons of chop drummers ever since Cobham emerged with Mahavishnu. his playing has influenced just about every "chops' drummer, but what I noticed is that these chops drummers forgot to add musicality to their list of what to practice. The same thing happened with Guitar players since McLaughlin came to the forefront. Every guitar player practiced speed to prove something, but they forgot to be Musial, so we have a laundry list of guitar players playing nothing but fast scales, heavy use of the whammy bar and other bullshit techniques like tapping and sweeps, but they fail in the art of studying music and blending musical styles to create something new and MUSICAL. That's the same thing with bass players, keyboard. players, etc. That's why most of the today's musicians did, they FUCKED Up and didn't concentrate on mastering the basics. You know like mastering blues, jazz, classical, classical Indian, latin, etc. and really PLAYING it on a level with maturity, originality, and authenticity. it's sad too. That's why there are very few musicians that have enormous chops that I pay much attention to. They forgot the fundamentals. To play in a musical situation as a GROUP of musicians playing together and playing musically. They opt for just showing off their chops in a very immature manner to impress the kids. IMO, there are only a handful fo truly great drummers that have chops, and Royster isn't one of them. to me, he's more of a novelty due to his young age. he hasn't matured in a musical fashion since he got into the Hip Hop realm, that's more of a money gig. Hip Hop really isn't much of a musical art form since there's not much of a melody going on. To me Hip Hop is funk without any sense of blues.

@Oneness100
@Oneness100 7 жыл бұрын
Zzdross Good for him. I don't particularly care for his style of playing. Lots of chops, no musicality that's interesting to me. I always find myself going back to the older '70's fusion, the older funk/R&B/blues drummers and then to guys like Trilok Gurtu. To me, these younger kids simply don't know how to swing a groove and play the songs and play WITH the other musicians because they are too busy trying to show off and play over everyone else. I know it's a lot of fun to play all kinds of chops, but it's got to be listenable. Some of it isn't listenable, at least to me. JC? Who's JC?

He played most of these hands well, even the first hand. The suck out on ivey for the bigger straight was a horrible hand. Beyond that, victor played great.... Put yourself in the opposite seat heads up... It's you VS a freight train who was on a Heater of a lifetime challenging the best in the world at the highest stakes. Those were the glory days of online poker. I barely slept for 2 days watching him battle Durrrr for their first epic battle when Dwan got eaten for lunch ( 4 million++ I think).... Every minute I was home there for a couple weeks time, I was railing FTP nosebleeds blowing bongs and also my mind watching. It's pretty lame what hastings and townsend did to him. Isildur will never be forgotten for the ferociousness he displayed. None of those pros saw him coming, especially Dwan in NLHU... Dwan was tilting like a 3 legged barstool for days and paid big time for it. Now he is just average at best IMO.
