What is cell phone coverage like in Iceland? If I'm out far from town and I break down, can I connect to a cell tower always?

How can I contact expats? I an 69 & live in the US, single & thinking about taking my first vacation (Iceland) since 2004. I tend to be shy so it's difficult to meet people on the fly.

In USA, carpet isn’t as common anymore. Maybe in a bedroom. Hardwood floors are most common.

Homes in America use Carpet more often due to it being the Largest Air Filter in a home. We have more pets as well.

F stands for Fjall which means Mountain. You still have the related word "Fell" in Northern England and Scotland.

Geothermal energy, heated floors and heated towel racks are all simply brilliant! Why on earth does Canada not do the same? Like you, we Canadians also always take our shoes off at the front door. I think that just comes naturally with messy winter weather - who wants all that slush and mud brought into the living space? But I was more relaxed about that when I lived in Victoria and Vancouver, BC, on the West Coast, where snow is rare. In winter, when it was wet, we always took our shoes off at the door, but didn't worry in the summer.

Actually wood frame construction, if designed correctly, is fairly good for withstanding earthquakes because it has a bit of "give".

Saying the homes in Iceland are different than the homes in the US is like you're saying the homes in New York are the same as the homes in Arizona, or Florida v Washington state. Anytime anyone uses a blanket statement for the entire US it falls very short. Why not just talk about the homes in Iceland? Everyone I know in Utah has heated floors and if we all lived on top of an active volcano we could all have geothermal power. 😂😂

We went to Iceland for the Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, and man did we ever love it. Very interesting people, very reserved until they get to know you, and that took a while. But ya, windy all the damn time.

Americans can't comprehend that the rest of the world does not live and work to fund capitalism, and does not consume like they do. It's why Target failed in Canada. And yes, off with the shoes!

I could probably male a similar comparison between Australia and Czechia/Europe. The most steiking difference for me was the lack of double glazed windows in Australia. When we wanted to have our new house double glazed, the building company guy couldn't understand and kept persuading is to rather have another room which we didn't need. I came to conclusion that you can not hope much in persuading people as to why they need something they never experienced. They need to travel to Europe, and live in a double glazed house for one year to understand. Some experience is not transferable by just talking about it or explaining it. It must be lived through. Thank you for your shared experience. Oh, and the Aussies, at least when I used to live there, didn't even know what a duvet or dunna was. They only knew the good ole English blankets. And I always loved a big duvet over the entire bed. It also tells something about the love and sharing one's warmth through the night. Perhaps the oldest practice, older than mankind.

After the wildfires in California, the rebuilding should follow the Icelandic model to ensure both earthquake safety and more efficient use of natural materials. Also, the minimalist modern look suits the Califofnian lifestyle.

We visited Iceland in 2022. For me it was the most interesting place I've visited and I've been all over the world. Iceland is amazing. We went in April when there was still snow around in places and generally speaking it looked like the surface of the moon. Which for me was a fantastic contrast with anywhere I've been before. In April it is as cold as the surface of the moon too. Bring all your thermal clothing with you as buying it in Iceland will bankrupt you. So, BIG contrasts in housing? 1. I'd say that the metal roof tops are one. I've never seen that before. It seemed very common in the capital city and I guess must be very noisy in hail. 2. Another thing is the geothermal heating. Yes it's everywhere and very cheap but the heated water in the bathroom/ shower smells quite noticeably of sulphur/ EGGS. but I suppose you could get used to it. 3. Considering the landscape, as a visitor you will notice that there aren't any trees or fields of natural grass. Why is this? It's because Iceland is a volcanic island and what little soil there is isn't suitable or deep enough for large areas of foliage. 4. The Roads. When you travel south towards the Golden Triangle outside of the capital city you will soon notice that many of the roads a few feet above the surrounding countryside. Why is this? Well, in winter when the snow can be deep in places snow ploughs need to be able to push the snow off the road quickly and as the roads are above the nearby land, this is easy to do. The downside of this is that if you loose concentration while driving because you can see a glacier in the mountainous distance, you might accidentally run off the road and down the bank into a lava field. Getting out and back up onto the road might be difficult so be careful. 5. Another thing to be aware of is that many countryside Petrol Stations have no staff operating them and accept payment either by debt card only or by the petrol station owning companies debit card. Advise your bank if you are travelling to Iceland on holiday so they do not stop your cards when you try to use them there. 6. Eating out in a restaurant or even a petrol station cafe is about 3 times more expensive than in the UK. Why? Because most items have to be imported. But it is a beautiful country. Visit it if you can.

Wife and I took the food tour our first day in Reykjavik late Summer 2023. We were very pleased with all the food stops we made and enjoyed Icelandic foods everywhere we traveled during our 8 day Ring Road trip around the entire island. We highly recommend the tour and all guides speak fluent English so it was a great experience all around.
