I will never use a pick - never have - been playing for over 30 years now - playing with my fingers was very natural for me and was and still very easy - its just me. Plus, I like the sound of fingers over a pick , again thats just me.

Thanks for checking it out my friend! I’m a big Monk fan, so this was fun to put together. There’s some challenges in here without a doubt, but it’s a good one to make you think about walking in a number of different ways. And Monk’s birthday was last week!

Do I hear a jam session coming on?!? I'm there. This would be really fun with banjo. That's kind of a lost instrument in jazz honestly. I mean, we have Bela Fleck, but that's about it. It was such an essential part of early jazz. It's too bad it hasn't continued in a big way. But jam with a banjo??? I'm there!

@chipboazmusic
@chipboazmusic 21 күн бұрын
Hi Tuesday. There's aren't any silly questions, ask away. Yes, it's a contrabass - also know as a double bass, upright bass, or acoustic bass. You know, you can play jazz on any type of bass from electric bass to double bass. That being said, the double bass has a long history in jazz that's pretty hard to get away from. I think there's something about the way that you have to pull the strings on an upright bass that really makes the groove happen in jazz too. But you can swing pretty hard on electric too. Glad you liked the video, thanks for checking it out!

Hey Bill, thanks for checking out the video, glad you liked it! I think that these approaches extend beyond jazz; you could use the melody in a solo in any style really. But it's so cool that you're checking out Monk & Oscar Pettiford. Can't go wrong with those two names. I believe Kenny Clarke is on that album too. Now THAT'S a rhythm section. Hey there! How would you practice intercalating the usual 4th note walking bass with 8th note phrasing and triplets? I'm studying a German book right now, I think it's called I'm walking. The later exercises mix everything and I can't seem to do it with a metronome. How would you start?
@chipboazmusic
@chipboazmusic Ай бұрын
This is a great question, and an important one to tackle. I might make a video around this topic. Honestly, I'm not familiar with this book, but I'll assume that it's got examples of walking bass going through several choruses. I'd start by simply taking a measure and repeat that until you can execute the figure that you're trying to get. Make sure to record yourself to keep yourself honest too. It's about seeing/hearing how things fit together in real time and sometimes you need a small musical piece to multiply your focus. From there, you can stretch that out to two measures, four measures, eight measures, and eventually a full chorus. I'd also listen closely to recordings and see if you can identify bass players using these ideas. Listen to players like Ray Brown, Christian McBride, or Ron Carter - you'll hear these ideas. You've got to know what it sounds like before you can play them. Getting that sound in your ear will go a long way. I've added this to the list of videos to make - stay tuned!
