Great vid! Interesting point about scale in the grim darkness of the far future! The incongruity between the sizes of IG regiments and the feats they accomplish in lore (the Tanith First, for example) is tongue-in-cheek mocked within the fandom more broadly, but nobody looks at the Emperor’s New Clothes all that closely. One thing to keep in mind is that the scale of the other arms of the military often flips the other way (when compared with modern warfare). The Imperial Navy, for example - where a Lunar Class Cruiser boasts a complement of 95000 people (compared to a WW2 heavy cruiser with a complement ~800). As such, I suppose when thinking of the 40K Drake Equation, there’d need to be an additional factor relating to “of your uniformed military, what proportion are infantry, armour or artillery” (the branches which map to the IG’s responsibilities).

I enjoy Carthage as well. My problem on my play throughs is that both of these are simultaneously true: 1) It feels bad to completely gimp Rome when they are highly vulnerable and miss that rivalry 2) The margin between ‘Rome is still manageable’ and ‘Rome is nearly unbeatable’ is only a hair’s breadth. I don’t like having a Carthage play through where Rome is conquered immediately. Yet they will annihilate you easily if you allow them to build up. It feels bad that if you try to allow Rome and Carthage to grow to their historical borders around the time of the 2nd Punic War - Rome will handily crush you (maybe that is historical tho 🙃). I want that role play to work more smoothly. Idk, I haven’t tried it in a while. Maybe I am a good enough player to handle them now. Either way, I love Carthage, but that is my impression whenever I play them.

I’m guilty 😂. Unless there is a very compelling reason to use political influence in the first few years of the game (like to change religions) I ALWAYS fill out the ideas. I cant stand not accessing the government bonuses from not filling them out.

Great video, thank you for posting. Migratory tribes are super interesting to play as in I:R. Always a breath of fresh air after playing a more ‘civilized’ nation. My favorite way to play them, rather than a single immediate migration to another region, is to use their migration mechanic to become huge throughout the uninhabited portions near their home region. It’s really a fun and satisfying but if micro which yields massive dividends in terms of pops and territories. Basic priorities are to: -Conquer home region for all integrated pops -Conquer border regions with a minority of integrated pops (set the governor policy to cultural conversion) -By shifting slaves and tribesman around to create slim majorities, migrate one large group from each province every 5-10 years and colonize a juicy province (priority to high population, same religion, new region for extra levy, and borders new nations) - crank that centralization down to morale, levy, and happiness bonuses This creates a really fun play style where you are aggressively converting pops to your culture in a variety of ways, doubling your pops on migratory groups, gaining huge amounts of territory, aggressively seeking slaves and spreading them through out your cultural majority provinces, re-migrating, building cities from massive growth in trade goods etc. you feel very dynamic and powerful. Great fun. With this play style, you will probably stay a migratory tribe for 50-100 years. You will be behind on tech and should try to knock your local enemies down several pegs while you have insane levy size and morale bonuses. The Dahae tribes are probably the best at this because they have 2 formable tags that will bypass the centralization process entirely (integrate Parthian culture to instantly form a monarchy.) Thanks again OP!

I appreciate the kind of video you just made as it adds a lot to the discussion of making a story more realistic and flushed out. I would have to find it again but there's a video out there that goes into the geology of Lord of the Rings and how many of the features are unrealistic. Though I do believe that adds some context to your point as the discussion of minerals and resources would have to evolve from that geography. I know in Lord of the Rings meteorites exist canonically as the story has one of the characters making blades from them. As such, it would be expected that these resources exist but are not flushed out story-wise. I imagine it would be very interesting to try to recreate where they may be on a map. Further question for you, when it comes to the Bronze Age mod for imperator Rome what are your thoughts? Both overall and how they deal with facts lost to time?

Thanks, I must still play the Bronze Age mod on stream, but I've been busy with life and the main channel.

It would be incredibly childish for me to suggest your taste in stories is somehow "wrong" but I think you are overlooking the type of story Tolkien was making. Many people look at Middle Earth and Tolkien's legendarium and think of the "world-building" in it, languages, cultures, places, history, etc. This is all fun of course but the stories themselves aren't really so much about that. The Lord of the Rings is set in a world that likely doesn't have census taking. Arnor is long dead, Gondor exists as a shell of it's former self. The shire definitely doesn't have a complex economy. The only "faction" that would be capable of industrial manufacture and logistics on a grand scale are the forces of Mordor and Isengard. That's also the point of the story. Industry is associated with corruption and the forces of evil. In universe there would be no mechanism by which Gondor or any human power could easily "know" the things you want without falling into dominance and power. It's also important to note that unlike many other fantasy series war isn't glorified in the Lord of the Rings. The hobbits, particularly Frodo, are permanently scarred from their journey. If the forces against Mordor had armies as large as Sauron, if they had the metallurgy of Isengard, then they would be indistinguishable from those powers. Gondor would scar it's land. It's the personal attributes of the fellowship that win the war. Is this unrealistic, yeah definitely lol. But that's why I love it tbh.
@Improbable_Gaming4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. To be clear, though, I'm not suggesting that the different polities tabulate the information I was suggesting in-universe, but that Tolkien presents it to the reader ex-universe. For example, given their tech level the humans probably don't have a formal written dictionary and language guide for Elvish, but the Tolkien fans do have something like that. Or rather, I am saying that this is what would make me personally enjoy LotR more. Since I fully accept that I am in the minority and my taste in stories is wrong, Tolkien was objectively right not to do so.
@euanpound6394 ай бұрын
@@Improbable_Gaming That's totally fair. I would love to see the resources produced by Gondor. The framing device would make it impossible in the story sadly. But supplementary stuff wouldn't hurt.

I feel the same way , but with science fiction book. Like they try so hard to be plausible. Yet they fail in building society and it’s history. I guess is that most people don’t really understand the “fluidity” of historical outcomes.

Hard to say about fantasy books, but this is certainly why I love Imperator over EU4, for example. It at least tries to have POPs, economic issues and so on. Victoria 2 and 3 are great as well, IMO.

Can you make a video as byzantion where you conquer eastern roman borders and rome as a republic reverse colonizing the romans? Also I don‘t get how to deal with the senate which I like to learn
@jdemarco20013 ай бұрын
Hey, i've been playing republics a bunch lately with massalia and i think i have some tips to share: Always try to increase the number of Oligarchs/optimates (the party that likes tyranny) in the senate. They are the easiest to manage and please because all you need to do is keep tyranny high. If you want to sway the allegiance from a traditionalist or democrat to oligarch, give them a single holding. Holdings give a +0.05 monthly tick towards oligarchy, this is not a surefire way to sway characters, but it can help if that 0.05 is decicive to turn that character from demo. Or trad. Towards oligarchy (ie. This mechanic is very useful for a character with monthly 0.1 oligarchy and 0.12 democracy). Traditionalists only care about having your pantheon be 100% deities from your religion (they get debuffs to support if you have deities from other religions ie. Having a druidic god in a hellenic country). Otherwise, they are hard to please, there is no easy or obvious way to increase their support. Always ALWAYS place INFLUENTIAL DEMOCRATS as GOVERNORS, because GOVERNORS get 100% REDUCTION to senate influence. This means that you can literally remove a whole faction off of the senate if you have enough provinces to have those influential senators as governors. Keep in mind that party leaders cannot be swayed from one faction to another. Yoy will often see a character with like 60 senate influence that is 2 points oligarch and 60 traditionalist and somehow they belong to the oligarchic faction because they are the leader of the party. Sorry if this is kinda messy, im still learning I:E myself, but massalia is my go to nation and i have come a long way wrestling with to have the senate approve my actions lol.

At minus 100 centralization you get 50% of migration cost. With the Germanic Tradition "Migration as Usual" you get 25% of migration cost. Theres also a couple germanic tribes that have a hertiage bonus for migration cost reduction. It gets the price down to about 0.5 to 1.5 Stability cost per a migration. Theres also a law to increase stabilty gain on the decentralized side of laws. It would be intresting to see how much one could culture convert in a single game with the migration mechanic. Also nice Germania run very cool!
@Improbable_Gaming5 ай бұрын
OK. Let's take a lowball estimate of 50k POPs for most of the world. About 1 stab per migration of up to 20 POPs. 0.05 stab / POP. Minimum of 2.5k stab to raise up the world. 0.5 stab/month gain, so 5000 months = 416 years to raise up the world as migratory stacks (they then of course can settle with your culture/religion).

If he went just one territorry to the east, his capital would be where modern day Frankfurt is. If someone wants to use a historical important germanic city.
