First year coach here. Im watching these to reacquaint myself with terms and some basics ive forgotten since ive done guard but one thing i remember my coach teaching us was to move our hands to our hip points (or early 00’s and our whole team had them…ovaries) then catch. Like 1-2 ovaries-catch. I will probably say hips to at the very least keep the giggles at bay

@Brittany_Whitlow4 ай бұрын
The beginning of the video is me introducing what the skill will be, then I explain how to execute the skill and what things to avoid doing that would prevent you from achieving the skill. This is a very beginner skill and some people learn how to toss from my videos because they don't have an instructor if that info is not necessary to you just fast forward 👍

Band camp is tomorrow and i still can’t figure out how not to be scared of the helicopter/horizontal toss. It’s in 2 of our routines. I’m screwed😬
@Brittany_Whitlow4 ай бұрын
@@Monkey_With_Anxiety it is completely understandable to be scared! The main thing is (as an instructor and as someone who's been in your shoes before) the best thing you can do is try the new skill. Its better to fail at it a million times / toss and not catch than to not try it at all! If you need to, try approaching it with all the toss information you've been given and just shield yourself or step back after you toss just to get used to it leaving your hands and it'll help over come that mental block!

@Brittany_Whitlow4 ай бұрын
@@Monkey_With_Anxiety Monkey_With_Anxiety You can do it! 45 especially are one of the hardest basics to master, and it may take awhile to get down but be patient with yourself and keep trying no matter how many times you might fail!

I tend to bounce my hand once I release, is there anything I can do to fix that? I try to mentally remind myself but that doesn’t always work out.
@Brittany_Whitlow5 ай бұрын
@@stemalem I always tell my students to think about the rotation only coming from the wrist, because if it comes from any other part of the arm (forearm, elbow, shoulder) you will bound your hand. Also try to keep your forearm flat or "tabletop" which will help with that as well, if you move up or down it'll add to the bounce

For dci/wgi is it required to spin a 39” sabre? Like can you still get into groups if you spin a 36”?
@Brittany_Whitlow6 ай бұрын
It depends on the group. I have spun 39 and 37.5s in WGI and DCI. And yes you can still audition for weapon for any group, even If they spin 39s and you haven't, because they'll usually give you a weapon to spin if you need! I would do research on a group you want to audition for because they usually have that info available or you can ask :)

Hi Brittany, I am currently trying to push to a five on rifle (still struggling over on sabre land tho unfortunately) but the highest I could get was a quad and a half. I did everything like exhale on the release and stuff :( Also another issue that I still have (it improved a lot since my hand learned how to actually push like you do) is that the rifle twists in the air causing it to rotate very slow and losing its momentum. Any tips on solving those problems??? Thanks in advance🫶🏻

how are you able to spot while looking up without getting dizzy because i keep almost falling over
@Brittany_Whitlow7 ай бұрын
It helped me to practice marking the turn and spotting without my rifle to feel more comfortable with that aspect of it, and I know some people that don't spot on 2 turns because it makes them too dizzy so they'll only spot the rifle once they've finished the 2nd turn so that might help you!

Ive spun two guard season so far (1 fall and 1 winter) and I know how to do 45s and single handed parallels. The fact that I’ve never learned how to do a double handed parallel from that point is kinda terrifying. My coaches (I love them no hate) we’re just like we’re putting 46s in the show and taught us how to do them even before I could do a successful J toss
@Brittany_Whitlow8 ай бұрын
That happens! Depending on where you spin and your coaches style you'll learn skills of vastly different difficulty at different times and thats okay :) when I teach I usually teach tosses like standard singles or j tosses first and then parallels or 45s because it's usually easier for folks to understand so kudos to you for learning that so soon!

What weights do you use in your flag?
@Brittany_Whitlow8 ай бұрын
I use a 4.5 inch bolt in the top of my flag and a 2.5 inch bolt in the bottom of my flag because it makes it alittle heavier and easier to use outside! But I've also used 3.5 inch and 2 inch before and it just makes it a little lighter

@Brittany_Whitlow10 ай бұрын
Hey! sorry I just saw your comment now, if you're grabbing on the black part (the Bolt) that means you're grabbing too soon and you're only doing a half spin. If you're grabbing right under the bolt that means grabbing alittle too soon but you're getting enough rotation. You'll know you did it properly if you start and end in the neck :)

I'm glad my videos helped! And I actually have a video coming out later this week that'll give you tips to improve your tosses! But specifically if you're "double catching" (hands not connecting at the same time) that means that 99% of the time your toss is under rotated and I need to give it a little more height or speed because your whole toss is slightly under rotated. Hope that's help!
