No they were shocked because both to see they were human. This was metaphor for how war changes are perspective on what the enemy is. We were told that the enemy is a monster when in reality they are human. This is what the film was trying to tell us.

@@scootersbooters1365 You have to admit that it kinda is biased towards portraying the american GI‘s as the „good guys“, especially in that cliff light scene and kinda emphasis the human waves stereotype by the north korean and chinese forces. But this has some good anti-war elements in it and I wouldn‘t totally call it propaganda. Also are you in the army? If so thanks for your service!

@@scootersbooters1365 I‘m pretty sure they were called 3-3 tactics, they were pretty elaborate squad tactics which did kinda rely on numbers to overwhelm UN forces but thats kinda because the UN had total air superiority and superior tech.

@@phileashuang240 exactly that’s what they used. That’s what we used but what I don’t get is how this is propaganda. All I see is a story about a regular dude it’s not saying he’s a good guy or a bad guy bro is just a dude. As for the Chinese and the Koreans human wave tactics is what they used yes, if you delve in deeper there’s a doctrine to how they fight squad wise, company wise, etc. But as it is documented the battle of the chosin reservoir was fought this way

That part where the soldier sees his enemy's face and it appears to make him "human" is pretty darn powerful. If you see your enemy as a person before foe, that doesnt always make you a bad soldier

I remember my grandpa who was a Marine in some very tough close range fighting in Korea mentioning the reason they didn’t buckle their helmets on was so if the enemy came from behind and pulled the helmet back to slit a soldier’s throat, the helmet would just come off. My Grandpa never hated the Korean or Chinese soldiers. He knew that they weren’t any different than him. He took offense if people said he fought for Americans’ freedom. He said he was fighting to free the Koreans from Communism, not for “our” freedom.
