My Dad was there, when he was drunk he would tell us of the cold, almost freezing to death, waves upon waves of Chinese charging with bugels and whistles and drums, bodies of the enemy piled up to be used like sandbags. He would have nightmares into his seventies when he passed away.

my god, I just watched the full doc on Chosin. I have a 20 yr old step son who has no clue there was even a war in Korea. I am going to make him watch the whole thing with me. Not as punishment but the story of these American Marines needs to be heard by all generations. Who cares who sent them there and why. The ability of these young men to overcome and push through hell is heartbreaking, amazing, and needs to be heard and consumed. God bless 'em all

Mr Iglesias, this work was a masterpiece. This film moved me to tears. So many compelling stories. What a fucking fascinating conflict. When the man was waiting his turn to be shot and....wow this was one of the most entertained I've ever been. I went on and bought books on Chosin afterwards, but nothing ever compared to this. I'm 58 and am retired U.S. army. My father arrived in Korea in March 1951. He was drafted and fought in the spring offensive. In my opinion as a amateur military historian the day after Thanksgiving 1950 for the next month was the absolute worst situation U.S. troops have been thru in history. At 1:38 the concerned soldier is holding his buddy. Look at his eyes. I believe he is dead. Very sad.

@Agtsmirnoff9 жыл бұрын
Adam Rubino I know the history of the Korean War better than you, and Truman was wrong to fire MacArthur. And no, we likely would not have started WWIII, and we could have taken out China but Truman was too afraid of starting any major war so instead we abandoned the people of North Korea as well as abandoned the 450 million+ Chinese (65 million of which would die due to Communism).
@adamrubino1789 жыл бұрын
Don't you get that using nukes causes political controversy? Besides that I'm a fucking history major. He had all the right to fire MacArthur. You and him, with your calls, would have possibly brought the beginning of WWIII and/or destroyed the world.
@brianbaird15039 жыл бұрын
+Agtsmirnoff Taken out China ?? Who you kidding, they came into the war because we were advancing on their border. We had the most modern mechanized Army in the World and got our butts handed to us. McArthur didn't give a shit about Korea, he only came there twice in 4 years, there is not doubt that his recklessness was a major reason we were defeated. The Chinese came across the Yalu weeks before we got there, they were waiting for us.

And yes, God bless those veterans. South Korea is an awesome place to live now. I'm amazed that there is so little recognition for the Korean War. Vietnam has that huge memorial, and Korea gets nothing. It's really shameful. A lot can perhaps be attributed to Truman's ill-fated 'police action' remark.

It is true that Kim Il-Sung received permission to invade the South, but it IS ALSO true that the Korean War is probably the only thing that prevented Communism from spreading throughout the entire peninsula. Right after the defeat of Japan, and the partitioning of Korea between Russia and the U.S. for eventual repatriation, the U.S. made the same mistake they'd made in the Chinese civil war - backing an unpopular tyrant for the sole reason that he was not Communist.

comments and promises from American leaders, as well as a lucky string of events in the UN that allowed for such a massive commitment against the North. Even so, later on, by assuming that Chinese and Soviet interests were essentially one and the same, the American's never predicted that the Chinese might get pissed off by seeing thousands of armed men just across the Yalu, and THAT is the major reason why THEY didn't wind up winning the war.
@pretzelzetzel13 жыл бұрын
You'll notice that Chaing Kai-Shek's China is now the comparatively tiny island of Formosa (the nation we refer to as Taiwan). Not only did the U.S. lose that bet, but they became connected in the Chinese sensibility with the hated Nationalists. The same thing was happening in South Korea: Syngman Rhee, a widely unpopular tyrant, was viciously anti-Communist, and so he got all the money the U.S. could spare. Every time a South Korean got fucked over by Rhee, it detracted a bit from popular...

They're the strongest military power there. I don't care if they ruin their own country. It's not our business nor is it worth wasting resources on. America doesn't really even need allies to protect itself from a ground invasion, but even if they did the puny south Korean army wouldn't help much. There would never be a successful invasion on American soil for one reason. For every citizen, there is at least 5 readily available high powered weapons. Our populous doubles as a huge defense force
@Behling10112 жыл бұрын
what?
@pretzelzetzel13 жыл бұрын
And SO, it is easy to understand how some people might want to theorise that it was a calculated plot on the part of the Americans and their allies. However, there is no evidence of this being the case. There IS evidence of Kim asking for and receiving permission from Stalin to launch his attack. None of them thought the Americans would be willing to invest so much to hold on to South Korea. In fact, even the Americans didn't. It was kind of an accident of poorly thought-out and ill-timed..
@pretzelzetzel13 жыл бұрын
opinion of the U.S. Let's make some comparisons: Kim Il-sung had been an anti-Japanese guerrilla fighter. Syngman Rhee was a wealthy, well-educated, pampered American who had nothing to do with the struggle against Japanese oppression, and nothing in common with regular Koreans. He even reversed his name order to mirror the Western form (Syngman Rhee instead of Lee Seung-man). Kim gave his people a sense that they had regained their country and destiny. Rhee gave his people the sense...
@drakashrakenburgproduction53694 жыл бұрын
Yeah then he oppressed and starved his own people, caused a famine in the 90s that killed millions of his own people, force escaped women who were pregnant to have unwanted abortions. Yeah he seemed like the right choice for his people.
@kalvin11232 жыл бұрын
Here's the rest of the story: as Rhee was getting educated, he was lobbying Congress to acknowledge the existence of Korea and advocate for its independence. Rhee gave speeches all across America to everyone educating them that Korea is neither part of China or Japan. He persuaded the American people to contact their Congressman so that Korea would be on their radar. He convinced America that Korea was important and worth fighting for. NOT just some land that China or Japan should get to keep after the war was over.
