man i love carlin but to be real there’s a reason PTSD has the name it has; to both seperate it from its military past (PTSD isn’t just a war thing), and to seperate it from the idea that it’s a short-term affliction like shellshock, battle fatigue, and operational exhaustion were considered (hence *post*-traumatic). the system sucks and would ignore the needs of veterans regardless - it’s not in its monetary interest to actually take care of veterans - blaming that on academic language is short-sighted and misses the real issue. still love carlin tho, wish he was still around

idk, ptsd describes exactly what it is. because you can have ptsd that isn’t from a war. so it makes zero sense to continue calling it shell shock. usually i find carlin hilarious but that was a lazy, dumb take.

This was 34 years ago and still rings true. You can't say somebody committed suicide anymore. You can't even say they took their own life. No, the acceptable word these days is "unalived." I, for one, refuse to partake in this softening of language.

It was "moron". And also "idiot", and then it was the "r-word" (which I love to use but cannot because it often Directly and Precisely describes the type of behavior that I am witnessing). Now it's fine to call people idiots and morons (sorta), but you can't call anyone the r-word. How long is it until I can't call someone "mentally challenged"?

The euphemism for stupid is actually intellectual disability, which was originally called mental retardation. Learning disorders are when people learn in different ways than what is considered average or normal.

Right why do you call a natural animal response to trauma a disorder. A disorder is ‘not of the common order’, ‘ not of the norm’. PTSD is what happens to anyone when you face the threat of, or at the threat of eternity.

Disorder here means malfunction, doesn't matter how often it happens. The problem is that a reaction to a trauma that was a reasonable response during the event still sticks around after the threat is gone. Then it becomes a burden.
