George Carlin - Euphemisms

In the age when torture has become "enhanced interrogation techniques"; when the rich are "job creators"; when murdered children are "collateral damage"; it is good to remember these brilliant words from the late, great, George Carlin.
It is also good to remember that the phrase "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" has now been officially changed in American English to "PTSD", a totally lifeless non-threatening acronym, totally devoid of even pity and with an almost whiny feel to it.

I remember the day he died, I heard about it over the radio while driving to work. The dj said, "George Carlin passed away..." I called the station and the phone rang for 5-6 minutes, he was on air so I understand. When the dj finally answered I said, "George Carlin hated euphemisms. He has not 'passed away', he's not 'pushing up daisies', he hasn't 'gone to the great beyond', he is dead. Straight up, he is dead."

In a way, saying someone has been "neutralized" as opposed to "killed" is almost more sinister.
@poyani
@poyani 9 жыл бұрын
DrivenByDiamond It is more sinister now because of its usage during the Vietnam War era. That was the word military and political leaders used back then. Because of their use, and the history of that war, the phrase has become sinister. There are now new euphemisms (like "pre-emptive strike" or "right to defend" which are used in direct contradiction to their actual meaning.)

@@abby361 true, but what he was pointing out is that the condition's name has been changed so many times that society has never taken it seriously because no one knows what PTSD (or shell shock) is anymore. It changes with the times, and no awareness is raised for it and in the end, no one cares. And if the name is changed again, there's no doubt people will be confused and not know what signs to look for with PTSD, leading them to assume they're 'crazy' or worse, apply another entirely unrelated condition like 'schizophrenia'.

LOLLYPOPPE Does he seem like the kind of guy who needs to remember a script in order to tell you about all this?
@LOLLYPOPPE
@LOLLYPOPPE 9 жыл бұрын
No, because this is a part if the act. His humour only worked because of the kind of authority he was on stage. His early comedy was not like this at all. You have to be pretty awesome on the stage to make the audience laugh by telling them how stupid they are. Only stuttering on one single word could ruin that image, so that is why I think every single sound he made on stage was planned 100%
@thomasc7610
@thomasc7610 9 жыл бұрын
You're not the only one who wondered that. Bill Maher also asked that question shortly after his death on a radio show. Of course he probably didn't remember his scripts word for word but when something means that much to you, when you're passionate about it, when it's an original thought, I think you can do what he does. Plus he's also been in the show business for almost his entire life. I can recite my favorite parts from his shows for the same reason.

Indy Revoly Ya, I would definitely agree that he was extremely liberal. But he was a bit of a traditional-libertarian, in that he agreed with much of the constitution and it’s purpose. Like, limiting the power and control of the government. He definitely did not trust the government and worried that it would become increasingly tyrannical. Which is what the constitution was supposed to prevent. And boy, was he right. I agree with his views on pretty much everything, and I would consider myself somewhere between a progressive and a traditional libertarian.

It's not because of SJWs, and a lot of it is no more than virtue signaling from corporations so it's not even real. The major push backs since 9/11 does not come from the SJWs either, it's done in the name of security by various different groups of folks, essentially in Europe for instance this comes from the rightwing who push for more nationalism and all that it entails, especially easy to notice in Hungary and Poland.

Psychologist have the term "learning disorder" because there's a ton kind of "stupid" and there's a lot of "different" method to teach them. There are students that are called "stupid" because the can't tell the difference between the letter "B" and "D," Or "6" and "9", so we developed the term "dyslexia". With right teaching method, these "stupid" dyslexic students can be "smart". Those "stupid" students is different with the "stupid" students that cannot focus for more than 5 minutes. But then again, common people will always find another "inoffensive" term like "not the brightest child in the class"
