Tablet is definitely the future. It hits every checkbox. You can browse, text, take notes, take and edit video and photos and create art. It’s the physical size that limits a lot of people from ditching the laptop. Have the 13” iPad Pro (6 years old) and would not ever go back to a laptop. You just gotta get over the price for a capable iPad but I view the price from a 4-5 year perspective. You don’t need to overbuy in storage with the USB-c now. Just bought my mom a gen 10 iPad for $350 and she absolutely loves it for watching KZbin and Netflix and managing bills. They are all really nice and capable.

Great insight. I am using the 13” iPad Pro M4 and desperately want to use it as my only machine. Its close and I think I could do it if Apple would just make the files App better and finally come out with better multi tasking and finally launch FCP for iPad 2, which they said was coming in spring…yet here we are now in summer

Sand is by far the scariest element when it comes to photography. It’s hard enough to scratch glass, especially when it’s blowing this hard. A few years ago I was in this exact same spot and I didn’t get a single photo because I was too scared. Never even took my camera out of my bag. I’ve come to realize that cameras can be replaced, moments cannot. Does it help having insurance on my gear, yes. But I wanted to share this, because the truth is, it wasn’t even that bad. I was able to clean my camera in about five minutes. I was able to keep my camera under a jacket most of the time to keep debris out. Don’t be foolish, but don’t be afraid to take your camera gear with you.

Software deficiencies has been the problem with the iPad since its creation. This is part Apple’s fault in not allowing side loading and part developers fault in not compiling such good programs for iPad. I do believe the iPad is sufficient for most people, but there are definitely specialised applications where laptops are still necessary. The iPad has long been my favourite computer, but I still use a Mac as well for certain tasks and when in my office. I love using the iPad, while the Mac is just a necessary tool. Kids are growing up with touch screen devices and I believe the iPad is the future. The Mac seems limiting. I am forever reaching for the screen with nothing happening. Also being tied to a keyboard limits use situations. With software improvements the iPad is a far better device.

Ipad mouse support is deliberately shit. If it was better (better control, text selections, more like copy/paste stuff) then it only use a ipad. But maybe im a smoothbrain and dont know how to tweak the ipad properly.

Used to need a MacBook Pro, back in 2010s when I returned to school for Graphic Design. Now I use Mac Mini desktop, with a big screen TV (old eyes, need big screen) and use an iPad Air5 for any mobile computing tasks (Pages, Keynote drafts-with BT keyboard, mouse & Freeform with Logitech Crayon v2 , then to Mac Mini if needed). As an older person on fixed income & longtime Apple/Mac user, I use an iPhone SE 128 GB, so NOT a lot of work happening on that size screen. Thoughtful commentary, on what might be.

Some more points to consider... Apple announced years ago that they would start bringing MacOS and iOS closer - from the apps and features, to the codebase and the processor they run on - and have delivered. But it's massive. They have few reasons to do it in a hurry, and a lot of reasons to pace themselves. "Keep selling stuff" is a big one, but perhaps more important is to see what people do with the products as they evolve.

Like all problems, capitalism is what’s holding us back.

That's a very wrong notion. While capitalism has it's faults, it's a far more forward-moving system than any other "-ism" counterpart. Just look at how capitalist systems in the world are more technologically advanced and innovative. The problems of capitalism are far more sufferable and bearable than the opposite.

I think migrating a workflow from Laptop/Desktop to iPad is always gonna be a challenge. You have to start on an iPad and build a workflow around its strengths and limitations. I did that for years in high school, where my iPad was my primary computer. The iPad had to be good enough because it was the only device I could take with me. Was it perfect? No, for the same reason that recording a movie using a Laptop webcam is a bad idea. But you can make it work.

Great video. But until the MacBook has cellular data and a built in and a rear facing camera, it will never replace my iPad. Granted, I’m probably a niche user but the iPad has changed the way I do aid/relief work in the field. I’ve had the iPad cellular still working when wifi was down while reporting live from typhoon hit regions. I can coordinate supply delivers (water/food/medical) live from the field with one device without being tethered to another all with a screen large enough for me to be comfortable working from.

I am a creative as a side hustle. For the past 4 years my only creative device has been my iPad Pro. I don’t do photography and don’t need color accuracy for the type of art I do, but I can do my entire workflow on my iPad start to finish without needing to touch my MacBook Pro. I only have my MBP because of my primary career as a software developer. But if iPadOS ever brings a full IDE and Terminal support to it, I wouldn’t need the MacBook at all. For art, there are plenty of fully fledged programs available now. Not all of them are exactly like their desktop counterparts, but they all don’t need to be. I use Procreate and Clip Studio Paint primarily, but when I need t work in vectors, Fresco has really great organic drawing experience with Vector and easily can transfer that work to Illustrator on the iPad for any final editing needed. My point is, there are definitely areas where creatives can have iPads as their only device and it will work perfectly fine for them, as is. Yes, there can be more and better programs, but that’s always the case. Improvement can always happen with any OS. I do think you hit the nail on the head though with how much more convenient the iPad can be. For the past 4 years of using it, unless I’m at my desk working on my MBP for development, anything else I do for any sort of computing is split between my phone and my iPad. I love how easy it is to drop my iPad onto the Magic Keyboard and write anything longer I need to write, and then just pull it off and immediately switch gears to being creative with the pencil. It’s way more portable in so many ways, even when it is heavier when the keyboard is attached. That being said, I do want improvements to it. I want Stage Manager to be better and more like Samsung’s DEX. Especially if we ever get some sort of IDE and true terminal/BASH for development. I want better alternatives for Illustrator like we have on the desktop. I want Apple to not be so picky and lock so many features into the “Apple Way” of doing things, because that’s the biggest hurdle for developers to make some of the more desktop like apps. Apple rejects many efforts out of hand just because the apps aren’t done how Apple wants them to be, not that they aren’t great and useful.

I think you're so wright. Some people ask how AI can "fix" the iPad. And that's it. In their last keynote they showed that you can remove the background of a video while editing. Thanks to AI and the power of their silicon you don't have to do it manualy so it's totaly doable on an iPad...

I use the ipad for illustration and increasingly to originate drawn animation, but have to go mac for post production work etc. It works but is a pain swapping between machines (and I hate dealing with the very limited IOs file system). Lots are talk about mac os on Ipad and I suspect Apple won't do it, but I think it more likely that they would do mac verison of Microsoft Surface. This would (I hope) work for a lot of professionals. It might be a flagship that they charged for... but I dont think it would conflict with the rest of their range. We'll see...

All the professional software has been available with a touchscreen on Windows for years. There is no reason not to make desktop software available in an ipad. It has the same chips as the macbooks, there is no reason anymore. The ipad OS is irrelevant

The iPad can't even format an USB, something that is always useful for a professional to have, by that point you will be better with a windows tablet or a android/Chromebook tablets that lately they got compatibility with lumafusion Having said that if someone knows how limited is the iPad OS and still wants to have fun with it, i will say is not a bad choice but pls at least have a Android phone or windows laptop for any extra thing that the ipad pro can't handle 😎👍

Our grandkids only have tablets. I have watch, phone, iPad, and laptop. I use the iPad for most casual tasks (KZbin, email, zoom, ebooks). I hand hold the iPad or on a stand depending on whether I am also doing work on my laptop. I doubt the iPad will replace my laptop unless Apple allows side-loading and supports virtualization. I doubt they will release a 16” iPad with the power of a max chip.
