How far apart did you space out your timeless posts?
@smithfamilypastures18 күн бұрын
About 20’
@Imononeization18 күн бұрын
@smithfamilypastures thanks! Just bought some timeless myself and trying to figure out how far apart I can extend it without compromising the effectiveness of it.
@smithfamilypastures17 күн бұрын
You can space them quite a bit farther than 20’ like we do if your terrain is pretty flat. We have a lot of rolling hills around here so that forces us to put them closer. We also hang geared reels on our fences so it makes it handy to have the post a little closer so the high tensile wire doesn’t sag as bad.

That’s great. We do not have much flat land around here. I’ve seen farms where they put them 40’ or even as much as 60’ apart if the land is flat.

Hello @smithfamilypastures Wow, we just saw the video you shared of setting up Timeless Fences, and we're blown away by your effort and dedication! 😊 It's truly inspiring to see our fences becoming a part of your space. We'd absolutely love to share your amazing work with the broader community on our social media channels. Would you be okay with that? Also, if you have any ‘after’ shots of the finished setup, we’d be thrilled to show both the process and the final result-what a great way to inspire others! Thanks so much for being such a fantastic part of our Timeless Fence family. We’re looking forward to hopefully showcasing your journey, from start to finish!

I haven’t taken the course either (saw your response to a comment); I just took notes from Jaime’s recorded seminars at Living Web Farm’s YT channel. This stuff really, really works. I have four acres of mainly tall fescue and reed canary grass in northern Michigan that I graze 10 goats on. I started last summer with them doing the standard “take 30-40% and then move them.” I had them all bunched up in a 16’x16’ pen that I just dragged onto fresh grass a few times a day and was seeing zero improvement of the pasture. I’d cover the entire pasture over a couple months and everything would be just as dry and rank as ever with no noticeable regrowth. I was doing the same thing for the first half of the current growing season when I saw Jaime Elizondo’s videos and thought I’d give it a shot. The results are just astounding. The goats were very ornery for the first couple days, but then they figured it out. Their condition, including coats actually improved, because “take 40%” made them so picky. Well, they ain’t picky no more! Google Maps updated the satellite photo of our land here back in early September, and you can very clearly see the dividing line from where I started grazing non-selectively. The grass there is as green as tree leaves, whereas the grass on the other half of the pasture is still mostly yellow. This is one of those things where, I get why they say non-selective is the way to go, I can see how it’s supposed to work, but you just cannot argue with these results. Awesome video, pal, and good work. Keep it up!
@smithfamilypastures2 ай бұрын
That’s great! Sounds like it has been successful for you too. We saw the same thing. We have seen all the things you mentioned. It takes a short time for the animals to adapt to figure out what is going on but once they figure it out it’s awesome. Again we have seen the same thing with hair coats and overall animal health. I believe it’s something about a more balanced diet. I think as long as we are observant and things continue to improve it’s the way to go. It really is amazing to me. Thank you for the comment!

I’ll be praying for you all down there. Stay safe. How much rain did you get? We got a lot of rain in 2010 like 10 inches or so one night. It was awful but we were the lucky ones. We only had foot of water in our basement. I knew people who had way worse damage than us. Some people got 20 plus inches of rain over that same night.

@smithfamilypastures3 ай бұрын
Thank you! We appreciate that. We have a lot of black cattle still too. Overall the red ones do seem to take the heat better but we have a few black ones with really slick hair coats and they do well in the heat too. It’s hard to beat the really slick red ones for the heat though.

In our area they pay a premium for all grass fed beef. My neighbor runs Dexter’s. He went to all grass fed and rotational grazing about 10 years ago. He lowered his feed costs and his revenue went up as well. His beef is much tastier. A couple of high end Restaurants contract for some of his beef. He is 3rd generation and says rotation schedules are tricky - no set rule because every farm is unique. He calls his technique selective grazing…..5 large paddocks and moves his cattle every 3 or 4 weeks. He harvests hay on 3 of his paddocks as well so that is built into his schedule. He tried smaller paddocks initially but large paddocks proved to be his best setup. less work on moving fences and water troughs.
@smithfamilypastures3 ай бұрын
That’s great. Sounds like he has it figured out. I believe every farm and climate is different too. Even each year can be very different on the same farm. It’s hard to beat larger paddocks and more selective grazing for finishing beef on grass. Doing non-selective grazing and daily moves does seem like more work initially but we have cut out a lot of bush hogging in our operation, we are utilizing all of the grass now, cows are eating weeds they never have, we are getting very good manure and urine distribution and really long rest periods. I think everyone just needs to do what works best for them in their operation to be profitable and enjoy what they are doing.

Hello, how do you keep the pastures green in summer by watering them?And which state are you from?

We graze an area hard for one day and then get the cattle off and allow the grass time to recover before we graze it again. We do not water them with any type of irrigation. We just rely on rainfall. We are in Floyd County, Virginia
