I like your video! It’s a very sweet and quick retrospective on perceptions of the fandom. I think I might fall into a bit of an interesting spot as someone in their early 20s who actually got in /after/ the whole thing ended. I was just very endeared by a lot of the characters and wanted to know about the Technoblade guy that I know the whole internet deeply respects. I quickly got invested into the characters and their dynamics. As an adult in the fandom space, I know damn well to stay off of Twitter tho. Its interesting, but I always say that the mcyt fandom is the most internally divided fandom I’ve ever seen. I also say that “nobody hates a streamer quite like their fans.” Fans are often just so hostile to content creators (especially ones they like) if they fall even an inch short from perfect. People have a bad habit of going either “my streamer is perfect and can do no wrong so the problem is your streamer” OR “This streamer failed to talk about this one thing perfectly and therefore they failed me specifically and I am disappointed in them.” I’ve seen people just sit on creator tags and watch streams to hate on them sometimes?? Like bro just watch literally anything else. This random 20 year old on the internet cannot be the perfect human and advocate for you. Anyway, it’s horrific to watch so much self destruction and see such a harsh divide, all of which is greatly amplified by Twitter’s algorithm. That algorithm is literally designed to show you content that makes you angry so you stay on it longer. Add in the fact that the fandom does lean towards younger audiences and the Twitter word cap basically leaves no room for real discussion, and you have a disaster. I call the younger audience thing “baby’s first fandom” where a fandom or media is mostly geared toward an audience of whom this might literally be their first time engaging with fandom culture. It’s like the hate that was geared towards Homestuck, Voltron, SU, and My Hero Academia. A lot of it is literally just kids being annoying because they don’t know internet or convention space etiquette. It’s a storm of kids being dumb online, them sometimes being more vulnerable to parasocial relationships as well as thinking it’s acceptable to harass other people or show writers, and older internet users getting sick of them overwhelming certain spaces. Anyway, Tumblr is actually a better space for fandom now as you can better block people and adjust your algorithm to things you actually wanna see. There’s more conversation that’s more in depth if you search for it. Also I’ve met some very good friends on their at this point as certain fandoms really do try to curate a more positive space. (Infighting still happens constantly for the mcyt fandom tho. Sometime people hate each other’s streamers, even if those streamers are literally friends irl. It’s astoundingly stupid if you think about it for even 3 seconds.) Anyway I have many words I can share on this topic, because I find it deeply interesting. I’m probably better off learning to make a YT video than just taking up space in your comment section tho 😅

Whatever you wanna say, dsmp was leagues better than most Minecraft content released this year. What’s new this year? Parkour Civilization? PC sounds like a 5th grader used and AI to make it. Anyway, Shadow of Israphel was peak
@_indigo_inkedАй бұрын
I’ll explode you with mind lasers /j Parkour Civ is literally great fun with the homies lol Also comparing a long running smp with a wide range of ccs to parkour civ is at least a little unfair. They’re entirely different types of stories. Parkour Civ is simply a funny silly good time with honestly some pretty good writing o7

As an DSMP fan, I see where the haters are coming from lol. I think a lot of fans took it way too seriously seeing as it’s just a Minecraft server. But I also love how serious ppl took it and I think there’s parts of the fandom that were genuinely wonderful. I’ve got no regrets, I love the DSMP but I can acknowledge that the fandom could go a bit crazy and the MCYTs are now controversial as shit (no I don’t support the Nibbler)

The Dream SMP was important to me in late 2020 because the election story arc and JSchlatt's corrupt presidency were comforting in a time of extreme anxiety due to covid and the American 2020 Presidential election. But I was never involved with, and did not like, the fandom or the stan culture. I was probably just about the oldest Dream SMP fan by far (if we don't count Philza), since I was 28 in 2020. So that's a pretty stark generation gap. I liked how JSchlatt brought a different dynamic to what was going on, and was engaging in a slightly more subtle kind of political satire than what most other people were doing. I stopped watching after he was out of the picture. I liked the way he seemed to represent an incursion of a different style and different internet culture into the DSMP, one which clashed with the culture already present in the DSMP. Interestingly, JSchlatt was maybe the most controversial and widely-cancelled person on DSMP at the time, mainly due to mildly edgy jokes (which were no worse than, and may have been better than, the edgy jokes made by Fundy and some other members). You can see Tubbo's onscreen chat in some of the early streams to see this-- they HATED him, insanely. (Tubbo obviously liked Schlatt, it was just the chat who didn't.) But now flash-forward to 2024, and JSchlatt is one of the most well-respected and scandal-free of all the DSMP veterans.
@vvbutnotvАй бұрын
whoa, didn’t know the fanbase had even older folks! totally agree about schlatt - i made a video like 2 years ago talking about how he didn’t deserve most of the controversy coming his way but i chickened out of posting it at the time lol thank you for watching!

Honestly, its been extremely hard to just see videos in my recommended stating stuff like "The Fall of the Dream SMP" or "What Happened to the Dream SMP?" cause in truth, I love that SMP. That SMP brought some sort of peace in the midst of a global pandemic and made me discover so many creators and channels on the way. It sucks that the reputation is shit and I even contemplated leaving the fandom at the time due to it which is a first for me. I hope people realize that those "cringe" fans were just kids who got into a lore-filled minecraft roleplay series when the world went to shit, and that includes me. I'm 17 now and have literally been in the Dream SMP fandom SINCE THE DREAMNOTFOUND COMPILATIONS. EVEN EARLIER THEN THAT WAS DREAM'S CURSED VIDEOS AND FINDING PEWDIEPIE'S WORLD SEED. Lets just say this SMP cannot escape me.

What do you mean you won't play the brainrot mod? D: /j In all seriousness though, this is such a great video. I would say my experience with the smp was mostly positive, I was a teenager back then and I'm now looking back at it as an adult. The fandom really was like no other, I loved the art and stories created thanks to the existence of this silly smp. I definitely do have some negative memories attached though, mainly because of how invested I was in the fandom and the content creators, it kinda hit me when some of them didn't turn out to be good people. I wasn't really too invested into the smp by the time the biggest controversies started, but it still had an impact on me mainly because of the nostalgia getting ruined. Now though, I can look back and appreciate it while it lasted. I agree with the conclusion you came to, it weirdly made me feel seen haha I also loved the visuals and just the way you went about making this, good work!!

I would not mind a Parasocial PDF workthrough cx I personally don't think the SMP was bad, but I wouldn't call it "good". More like "It was okay". I believe that some of the players were quite a huge influence and quite great to watch. Technoblade and Philza are always going to be a huge part of it for me. But honestly, if I were to say "What was the most important part of the SMP for me", I'd say "The people who came to be because of it." People like EvanMcGaming, whose entire channel exists BECAUSE of the SMP, because people wanted to know the lore and wanted to understand it in one go leven if it had plotholes). People like, yes, VVButNot, who just jumped onto my recommended one day and I just went "Yup, guess you get my Sub." People like SAD-ist, whose Animatics even BROUGHT ME to the SMP. Derivakat, who made some of the most memorable songs based on the SMP imaginable. THOSE are what I think ended up important. I still have a friend that I ONLY met because of the SMP. These connections, these new creators who showed up out of nowhere. That is who I'd call "The good that came from the SMP."

I could write an entire 111 page essay of my own on DSMP (or just start like a podcast episode), but I’ll just say that it was very interesting in terms of how it brought older fandom culture to the mainstream and the discussions (and arguments) that spawned from that.
