For the dual wall system, the hemp/fiber exterior wall is not load bearing so what happens at the top of the wall? Is there a header poured that the fiber wall can support, or is the roof only attached to the earth interior wall? Thanks for the information.

From what I'm seeing about using hemp foe building products it looks like hemp will become much more widely used and cost will come down. Considering how fast the plant grows it looks like a more sustainable product and eco friendly. I was wondering about the weight and how hempcrete compares to concrete. Also the durability by comparison. Good video.

You're right about everything being so expensive and continue going up. I've been wanting to take a permaculture class near me but it's so expensive. It seems they make these courses for wealthy people but they're not interested in it. Even the online courses are astronomical. I'm very interested in rammed earth building. What is better and easier for a passive solar home, adobe, cob, or rammed earth?

Hi there, I'm based in the UK and have read the literature of Ianto Evans and Kiko Denzer regarding building in cob and the communities springing up surrounding that. It made my heart soar and it's very 'me'. I'd love to build my own cob house and homestead outside of the UK. I don't know how possible that will be given that I have no money, but I've made a good start in learning bushcraft and survival skills and have built my own tarp shelters for overnight solo wild camps in the woods. I ran allotments for nearly 10 years so feel I have had quite a good foundation. I've just bought your course which I'm really looking forward to getting my teeth into. Thank you very much.

The guys at Abundance Build Channel use styrocrete which has some pretty crazy R values. I wonder if you could incorporate shredded styrofoam into Cob as an insulator? I wonder how that might affect it's R value?
@benefitsboss915823 күн бұрын
Clay absorbs all toxins & is activated by moisture/water…remember brick 🧱 is made from clay & gets real🔥 if not insulated properly insulation can consist of pallets, oh clothes, cloth, plastic bags or a mixture of such

How would you allow moisture to escape and keep it well insulated if you’re somewhere with a cold winter? Probably years out from building my cob home, but I’m in northern New England 🥶

I live in Northeast North Carolina and im wondering if i can use topsoil instead of subsoil as often the subsoil is just sand or alternatively just clay. I will mention i found a sand company nearby that said their sand is 25-30% clay and im wondering if i could just use a load of that.

I've built many houses and have been interested in building a cob home off grid for quite a while. I'm currently looking for the right location. The main issue I have is finding a location where I will be "allowed" to build what I want. I plan to work with a structural engineer prior to finalizing my plan, but I've found local building departments to be intolerant of anything they're not familiar with. Cob isn't a stick built home, so they literally don't know what to do wifh it. I never realized just living simply off the grid would be so terrifying to government trolls. Even when the parcel has no zoning, the local building department still wants to dictate how everything gets done. And they don't know what they're talking about. I'm not trying to build some cheap structure. My goal is to build a rock solid home that will last for generations. I've ruled out almost a dozen parcels already, because the locals all seem dead set againat this. I have enough work to do without having to educate these children on how to do their job. I'm almost at the point of not even asking permission and just building without a permit. Never done that before. I'm in Indiana where we have a statute called The Log Cabin Rule, which exempts you from needing a permit if you're building your own home for your own occupancy. The only issue is, local government peons don't know the law and I'm afraid they'll still try to shut me down after breaking ground. Any advice or insight into this issue is much appreciated.

Despite being a Realtor and connecting people with some amazing homes, the “homestead” lifestyle has been appealing to me. For many years I’ve been interested in learning new applications of old techniques in building. I participated in a workshop with Alex a couple years ago and it was amazing on so many different levels. Even though it was during the pandemic, all the participants worked together-everyone was easily able to translate what we learned in the class sessions to the building project-it was one of the most satisfying experiences to work TOGETHER with a group of seemingly unrelated individuals from so many parts of the country who had such diverse life experiences toward a single goal. It was physically engaging, as everyone’s efforts were visible and able to be measured and appreciated. Additionally, it was soul satisfying from the standpoint of being connected with others during the process, with the earth as we transformed it into a home, and with ourselves as we set technology aside to quietly contemplate as we worked. Alex is a very knowledgeable teacher and has so much experience to share with others. Do yourself a favor and buy the teaching materials, participate in a workshop and create your own project. It will transform you on many different levels. Thanks Alex for so generously sharing your expertise!

I've done free cob workshop's. Twice. But everyone is afraid the building code will trip them up. I always tell them. Draw it up, keep it simple. Follow the basic rules and let the engineer do his calculations. He will find it comfortably exceeds building standard minimums. If your struggling financially all the more reason to go with Cob. It's easily the cheapest quickest way to build IF you start small then extend later. Forget the concrete. RUBBLE TRENCH, stone plinth wall, cob, timber roof. Use lots of straw if you can afford it. If not, just use bramble or any woody plant material. Times are hard and set to get worse. To hell with building approval if you must. Shelter is a right, not a privilage. Stop giving your power away to local government.
