I am absolutely one of those that love the idea of Darkseed more than the actual game. I remember playing it but I don't think I ever finished it, for obvious reasons.

This is such an Awesome game that I would never play. Thank you for showing me why it's a masterpiece. Seriously, it's so imaginative for being so primitive.

30:02 😅 Back in my younger days, I might have 'borrowed' a few things in Ultima Underworld... I blame youthful curiosity-and a lack of better loot!

I still have all my cloth maps. I still have my Ultima 6 moonstone, and I still have my Ultima 4 Ankh. Ultima was a massive part of my childhood and it was in no small part because of the feelies in the boxes.

Ultima V was my introduction to PC RPG’s… and what an introduction it was. I still have the original box, discs, and the extras, including the cloth map. 😊

You do not need to leave the ichrius key behind, in KF3. Just take it back out and the portals stay. And the Promeus Armor is worth it - the full set makes you completely invincible to physical attacks.

That whiny track that ends around 1:10:00 mark is a pure torture that was so intrusive - it made it actually hard to listen to narration.

If you like Ultima you should check out the MMORPG Tibia. It took heavy inspiration on Ultima 6 and even used some of the games' sprites in its early versions. It is one of the longest standing MMORPGs having been online since 1997. There is even a NPC named Avar Tar after the Avatar.

i've been playing this game since its first alpha days. it's always been one of my favorites. you hit the nail on the head when you said no amount of time playing it would be enough!

We had this on the Amiga, but the screen flickered. I think it was maybe hi-res interlacing. It was headache inducing, and we thought it was deliberate to make the game more immersive.

Started playing the Age of Enlightment trilogy because of you, and I'm comepltely blown away at how engaging they are in their simplicity. Minimal guides, just using the game manuals, a notebook, and an pdf of the map of Britannia with my own annotations (yes, I manually translated the location names with the Runic Alphabet). I can't remember the last time I've been this immersed in a game.

I think that's what was so good at about the Myst series, was the sense of immersion, and the puzzles generally feeling truly, culturally integral to the worldbuilding (particularly as you get beyond the original). Given how what really works about some of these is the jank rather than the intended realism, it's too bad fmv would be too expensive for indie game designers to really do, since things along the lines of night in the woods would fit in quite well. And Remedy, particular in Control and Alan Wake 2, has been doing delightful things with fmv used in seamless, targeted ways. Control especially uses a variety of in-game media to really sell the veracity of its setting and holy SHIT does it work while. It's also done to sell a certain technological timelessness, as some pieces of very current technology cause problems.

Tales of Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia are what I consider the holy trinity of JRPGs. It's a very unique series that has even itself lost track of why it was originally so incredibly influential and why everyone loved it.

Not sure if you have time to read all comments but since your scripts are extremely well written I just want to point out the difference between "less" and "fewer." Don't get me wrong, I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment of this series - Underworld was what got me hooked so this video is the latest for me - regardless of how you use "less" but as this is a personal pet peeve of mine I couldn't keep my trap shut. :)

I played Ultima Underworld when it was first released and for me, still the best game in PC history. A seminal game that set the standards for all future games to follow, the iconic ADWS controls, true 360 degree view screen etc. Even the much lauded Wolfenstein 3D was only 3D along the horizontal axis, not vertical axis.

1:35:34 I spoiled the story for myself by using the Orb of the Moons to teleport around the world (just testing it out to see where I could go with it). Going to the gargoyle's city, freaking out when I first saw one, trying to hide, then realizing they weren't attacking me. I then started talking to them, learning they weren't evil and what was really going on. All of that early in the game. Unfortunately, the game wasn't equipped to deal with that, so you couldn't avoid fighting gargoyles in the earlier parts of the game. That one bit of goofing around radically changed my perception of the game and the story early on.

I remember playing underworld for the first time and finding 3D first person weird. I quickly went back to other dungeon crawlers which I felt more comfortable with. It wasn’t until Daggerfall that I persevered with a first person combat/explore game. Even today I prefer third person

It’s not just 486 has more processing speed….the 486 included a math co-processor on die. This made for way better computational power for math, very much a need for 3d graphics.
