I was just informed that Sinatar (whose clip I briefly used when discussing NOB) passed away in late 2021. I wasn't previously familiar with his work, but like Pete Dorr, his streams ALWAYS came up while I was doing research for this video, and I always took a 10 minute break to watch him play. He seemed like a real likable guy and I admire his dedication in grinding through these arcane 3DO games. I just wanted to give my condolences to his family, friends & fans if any of them happen across this video. May he rest in peace.

@@discountfeces The Cd player and DAC on the 3DO is really damn good. I could see that being attractive when it was likely a cheaper price than other players, while also being in a country that loved hifi.

@@discountfecesprobably has a lot to do with the fact that PC gaming kind of fell off in Japan. The lower licensing costs in comparison to Nintendo, Sega and Sony probably made it very attractive to smaller studios who would previously have been focused on developing games for the the MSX and Sharp PCs that fell by the wayside after Windows was pre-installed on most new PCs in the 90s. It was also intended to be able to play video CDs, though I don't think that the add-on ever came out, so it was proposed as a really good CD player, home video player and games console all in one package (which was a big deal when Japanese homes are so small and space is at a premium).

The 3DO is looked at as a sort of joke these days but let's be real, we all wanted one back then. I know I did, but it was unobtainium. That 3DO version of Road Rash was the coolest thing ever and it's still a great game
@discountfeces

@@PlasticCogLiquid my dad owned sportbikes and loved Road Rash, I remember him being at the very end of the last race on the best bike when an opponent biker literally fell out of the fucking sky and one shotted him with the chain which lead to him rage quitting. There was a period when I was a kid where we arranged "road rash" bicycle races for like 2 days, highlights were one kid getting a broom handle in his front spokes and another trying to ram a roadblock of bicycles (the last person in each race was knocked out of the race but could run interference) and getting hurt goddamn kids are insane lmao

Theory for AD&D Slayer: the ability to customize your stats with impunity might be the developers accounting for D&D players with preexisting tabletop characters who might want to self insert, it would make sense to allow you to make yourself as strong or weak as want.
@AverageAlchemist
@AverageAlchemist Жыл бұрын
For AD&D Slayer, the reason why you can just choose whatever stats you want is so that players can import the characters of themselves or friends from either tabletop AD&D or one of the other AD&D-based video games. ...Alternatively, you can use it as sort of difficulty setting.
@EmeraldLavigne

I presumed it was because the instructions basically walked you through character creation, like, "get 3D6 & roll them; that's your Strength stat. Enter that number in the field. Do the same for the rest of the stats."

@@evaristocabrito2517 afaik it started with pool of radiance. anyway, as there's no actual other person, you could just keep rerolling, resetting the game and rerolling or whatever anyway, so it kinda saves time. but here's a thing, some games kind of just assumed you'd have full stats on top of top gear to fight 20 umber hulks at a time 20 times in a row while mapping out, I wouldn't recommend anyone play the goldbox games without full statting everything - also as the computer is the gm and the program is fixed, it doesn't adjust anything to player characters ability - and the players have savegames to work with anyway and the difficulty and all is adjusted to that. the goldbox games also let you import your character from game to game as files too. and iirc start over with the same characters(edit: retaining the character levels). but man ffs the fights in the mine in secret of silver blades.. a game that basically straight up starts up with fighting a dragon and just ramps up from there.

While I hadn’t heard of any of these games before, as someone who watches Mandalore, I pegged immediately that it was from the Ring people. Like, every time I saw the video thumbnail before actually watching this, I was like “…was there a port of Ring for 3DO? Maybe just Ring 2?” Let’s be honest, though: the 3DO is better off for getting Dragon Lore over Ring. Ring is a cursed duology of games that almost should not be.
@Hwyadylaw
@Hwyadylaw Жыл бұрын
Just from the clips in the video, your take on Blue Forest Story is basically correct, but bringing the offerings to the shrine isn't a coming of age thing, and the girl (Suzuna) is his little sister. I'll translate the bits that the translation app mangled, with some notes: Temuzen: "Hmph, so you're finally awake. Seriously, when it comes to you... you should be a little more like Suzuna." Varuerusu: "Yes..." - - (A Latin alphabet spelling of his name could be anything from Varuerus to Varuels to Varwells to Val-Eluth) Temuzen: "Good enough. There is something I need you to do." "Go to the shrine and deliver offerings for the Forest God" - - (The "and ride" probably comes from the auxiliary verb "kuru" that really means "and come back", or literally just "come") "I'm just saying this to make sure: Do not eat the offerings." - - (Literally it would be "steal and eat" or "steal-eat", which is a bit like "sneak a bite") "(Helps) Bad" -> (Explanation) 1/1 - - (At the shop you can buy, sell, or ask for an explanation about the items) "Fang extraction" -> Defanging (i.e. weakening) powder "Easy" -> Simple/crude/convenient/single-use tent To wrap up the "go to the shrine" arc: The priest tells you that someone stole ornaments from the statue of the goddess.

@@filip7133I would say that CS definitely pulls from stuff like Immercenary and NOB (and some similarly strange PS1 games. I don't know if they looked at these games specifically, but in terms of actually released commercial products these experimental and fairly inscrutable titles, the 3DO and PS1 are a very good source for inspiration), but also I would imagine that there's a bit of a callback to the experience of downloading custom multiplayer maps and conversion mods for games like quake, unreal and half life and discovering something made by a complete novice that was made mostly to mess around with the toolset with a bunch of custom textures that don't fit and a bunch of odd bits of level design that present interesting ideas in a very unpolished way and feel a bit disconnected from the core concept of the game.

I also used to be absolutely obsessed with Robinson's Requiem (on PC/DOS port, obviously) back in the day, because I read the Crusoe book way too many times, and this also had sci-fi and horrible drawbacks and deaths added into the mix. You can lose your limbs and still keep going, within limits. @@Nat3_H1gg3rs Tbh, I wouldn't really try to play a machine translated JRPG or a sound novella, those are story focused games, and when the main experience on the menu is a word salad, the whole meal gets staler than it's probably is. As for N.O.B, translation glasses can't do much against a game that gives you the majority of info via a disembodied voice that has absolutely zero subtitles. I guess the best shot would be transcribing by ear and going from there. It also just drops your ass into the game without any tutorials, which means that it's probably following the "read the manual first" design. Too bad that there's no manual anywhere, or even a scrap of info on the Japanese interweb about the thing, besides "it exists", and a few expired auctions.

@@stevenpina1983 relying on machine translation to beat a game guarantees you won't understand what is happening, and almost guarantees that something you could've understood otherwise will be buried by the mystery of a mis-translation. The fact NOB's menus are in English but make it more confusing is a testament to that. Japanese is one of the worst languages to machine-translate.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Robinson's Requiem, that game mystified me as a child but kept me coming back no matter how many times I died of heatstroke, got eaten by wildlife, or "accidentally" performed anaesthesia-free self-surgery out of morbid curiosity. Would love to see you do a video about the indie titles created by people on the special PS1 known as the Net Yaroze. I was introduced to some pretty impressive examples on the PlayStation underground's volume 2 issue 2 disc 1 (specifically a 60 fps racing game and a paper plane simulator), and there were some other stand outs as well. One was an rpg, and one became a real PS1 game (devil dice). Hope you and yours have a safe, happy, and healthy 2023.

This was truly the most bizzare fever dream I have ever experienced. I started out thinking, there is no way I can watch a 1.5h video on the history of RPGs on a dead console. The first few games were so bad in a charming way that I stuck around. When we got to titles 4-7, I thought we're heading in the direction of exploring some legitimately good games on an underrated system. What followed was a slow descent into madness that had me asking questions like "what even is reality?", "did this actually happen?", "is this a psyop being played on me to make me believe these games existed?", "surely this is some satanic subliminal message and I will end up murdering my long-dead dog before we get to the end of the video?". At this point, I don't know if reality exists. I have been committed to an asylum, but that will not stop me. I need to play every RPG on the 3DO to find the answers.

I always had that impression, this video just confirmed it. Console is similar to the CD-I in some ways, but the actual game library is a grab bag of the most fascinating stuff out there. Is it good? Not often. Is it weird and worthy of discussion and preservation, and at least one play session? Absolutely.

That video gave me a cool game design idea. The "destruction" mechanic made me realize on how I could implement "pick a door open" mechanic into a JRPG style game. Instead of requiring player to level up some kind of lockpicking skill (where usually jrpgs don't have levelling up abilities), instead I could give these as a property to weapons, or even equippable items. It is not unreasonable that e.g. a thieve's dagger could be used for opening a door, for example.

Yeah a lot of people focus on that stuff because it's easy fodder for mockery, though the FMV was admittedly one of the platform's stand out features. It was a very unique library with a legitimate gems and the original games games that did end up on different platforms are generally superior on the 3DO due to the unique architecture. It's definitely got a lot of mediocrity compared to the competing platforms but I have nostalgia for it as it's a console I grew up with.
