Thanks Mark! This is the only video I could find. Mine was really seized, so I used a blow torch for about 20 seconds and it worked. I had previously removed the top vent and put a small paver in its place to vent. This saved me both time and money - SUBSCRIBED!

There are three legs on the smokey joe. I think I will just line up the bolt holes for the tamale pot with the legs on the smokey joe and make my holes around. Awesome build man!

Any updates on the welds? Did you line the bottom of the firebox with fire bricks? Will you weld a smoker collector box and 4.5" chimney that is more than the length of the cook chamber?

I smoked some of their chuck ribs the other day, 5 hours and they turned out super awesome. Braised them for an hour after they were done smoking to tenderize. Def worth the $7. I wouldn’t ever get their beef back ribs though, all bone and hardly any meat

I went and purchased mine for about 370. Had to many heat leaks. I was about to add all the gaskets witch was another 30 give or take. Then decided it wasn’t worth the cash and returned it for a Pecos same concept except welded instead of screwed on. Not sure about the silicon and fire tho

I would love to see a side by side comparison of the akorn and the akorn jr. Is the small one too small .?.
@hawkeyeted
@hawkeyeted 2 жыл бұрын
I have both. Akorn is approx 20" grate. Jr. is approx 14" grate. The Jr. is fantastic for tailgating and other smaller cooks due to its small size and portability. It can hold it's own for slow and low, but don't expect marathon cooks. There's just not enough capacity for the fuel required. You can reasonably get 5-7 hours @250*, which is plenty for a 5lb Butt. If you don't need portability and backyard barbeque is your thing, the Akorn is probably better. It's got more flexibility. A large grate for lots of burgers/wings/dogs/brats. It can also hold full briskets and enough fuel for cook it without refuelling. You can't go wrong with either, you just have to consider what your needs are.
@MrMrsregor
@MrMrsregor 2 жыл бұрын
@@hawkeyeted yea man, thanks! I got the jr and made a hitch attachment to carry around on the back of my jeep. It’s just a nice way to carry it around. but I also occasionally drive somewhere while smoking a brisket or chuck roast :) I like the jr so much (I use it about 6 days a week for family dinner) I might also have to get the full size for a permanent installation in my outdoor kitchen

Hi... Where is the second vent door with all the holes? Did you remove it? Does charcoal fall out of the bottom vent?
@MarkInThePit
@MarkInThePit 4 жыл бұрын
There is only one lower vent door, I have never had an issue with charcoal falling out, There is metal grate in the bottom of the charcoal ceramic bowl that holds in all the coal. Ash just falls strait down and collects in the center of the basin. You actually need to take a tool to reach in and scrape out the ash or disassemble and vacuum it out when cold.

great video! but does everyone know you can buy coal baskets that make the kettle an indirect smoker without all the fuss? And a top grate that hinges over the coal baskets???
@MarkInThePit
@MarkInThePit 4 жыл бұрын
On something this small one of those charcoal baskets won't make much of a difference. They do work pretty good on a full sized kettle though by keeping the heat off to one side.
