@thehoneycompany10 күн бұрын
Right. Honey is shelf-stable straight from the hive. You do not need to heat or boil it.

We used a non-brand name mason jar, but you could use any. We get them from the local feed store, hardware store, grocery store, or from Container Supply in Salt Lake City, UT.

Is there a reason every box I’ve seen uses a box joint?
@thehoneycompany10 күн бұрын
Good question. A bee box doesn't have to use a box joint. The box joint holds up to the weight best, so it's more popular than, say, a rabbet joint.

We got them from Dadant, but it has been 15 years since we bought them. I checked the other day and they didn't have them listed on their website.

I have some of these. Is the screen supposed to have enough water tension so the water does not go anywhere past the screen? Or does it fill up from the very bottom?
@thehoneycompany10 күн бұрын
I hope I'm understanding what you are asking correctly. The screen goes down below the edge of the plastic part. So you can fill the feeder so the syrup level is higher than the screen without it leaking. The bees would only crawl down to the water level to get to the syrup. Does that help?

On Amazon or many places.

We have several honey gates. We got the honey gate on Mann Lake's website, and we got the ball valve style gates from a local plumbing supply store. (It is food grade).

Does larva,pupa(baby bees)does in this process of extraction??
@thehoneycompany10 күн бұрын
They get a bit dizzy and then we put them back in the hive. We try to extract frames with honey and without brood. If there is honey on a brood frame that we want to extract, we wait for most of the brood to emerge first.

Just curious, do they spray the field with herbicide and insecticide? If so what is used and how does it affect your bees?
@thehoneycompany10 күн бұрын
Some alfalfa producers spray for alfalfa weevil. If they do, we move our hives, because that insecticide can harm bees. We avoid areas where they spray as much as possible. (Though we can't control where the bees go. . . ) When producers spray according to the instructions on the label, it reduces the impact a lot too.

I have sundance pollen traps like you do. I have screen bottom boards though. I had a bunch of dead bees under the pollen traps between the screen and trap. I think screen bottoms confuse them while pollen traps are on. What is your experience on that?
@thehoneycompany5 ай бұрын
Good question. We use solid bottom boards, so we haven't seen that firsthand, but can see why the bees would be confused. They want to go up through the pollen trap, and then into the hive, but the open air through the screen might confuse them about where to go.

I wonder what about the drones because they won't pass the queen excluder. How will you find the queen in a whole bunch of drones then?
@thehoneycompany5 ай бұрын
Practice. Lots and lots of practice. Ha ha. But seriously, we often find the queen based on her movement, and the way the other bees move around her. The movement helps us see the difference between queens and drones more easily.

How do you sterilize your lids beforehand? Should i sterilize in water bath, air dry and cool then place on my sterilized jar so it's ready for honey? I would like to have jars and lids ready the night before so i know everything is dry
@thehoneycompany5 ай бұрын
We don't sterilize the lids. We use clean, new lids and jars. If we bottle in used jars, we do sterilize those in our sterilizing dish washer. Since honey is so acidic, and has a low water content, it doesn't grow bacteria. (This is assuming you store it in glass or plastic with a sealed lid, and harvested the honey after the bees finished drying it.) Bottling honey is different from canning and preserving, where you would need to sanitize the lids in a water bath to keep bacteria from growing.

How successful is this technique I have the same position the cells have hatched nearly about 2 or 3 days, how long until I see eggs?? Or new queen
@thehoneycompany6 ай бұрын
Queens that emerge within the colony (from queen cells) are the most likely to be accepted by worker bees. But there is always risk when re-queening. After emerging, she will mature for about a week in the hive, then go on a mating flight, and then spend about another week getting ready to start laying eggs. (So 2 weeks until she starts laying). She needs warm, dry flying weather to go on the mating flight. If it’s rainy or cold, she will wait until it’s good weather again. The first of her offspring will emerge as adults about 21 days after that.
