Abusers have no empathy towards their partners and do not accept nor recognize any wrongdoing. Theoretically if Chuck was an abuser, he would not be able to grow emotionally and realize the hurt his actions have caused, and apologized to Blair.

Why not? He grew so much from this point. Chuck took her for granted in his season 3 relationship with Blair. He never had a monogamous relationship before this and believed that because Blair was willing to stand by him, he didn’t have to treat her as an equal. But distance from Blair allowed him to grow. Change. Become someone who selflessly gives her up when she is coming to him willingly because he believed he couldn’t make her happy. Become someone who is able to recognize her value as a person and apologize for everything. Chuck and Blair are twin flames. Two halves of the same person. Most twin flames do not last long term due to differentiating states of emotional growth between partners, and can become toxic because of this, but they always find a way back to each other, and can have an epic, healthy, long lasting love if they were on the same stage in terms of growth. How can we not ship that???

Whilst I do agree with the double standard, I think it’s still important to outline how unhealthy their relationship was in season 3, and I say this as a Chair Shipper. They may have loved each other, but it wasn’t a healthy love. Chuck took her for granted because he twisted her words about always standing by him, allowing him to think he could use her like a chess piece and she would still stay with him. If Blair decided to forgive him here and stay with him, that would have only reinforced chucks toxic image of her. He would continue treating her like his property until her light would die out. Despite the fact that Chuck was emotionally vulnerable to tell Blair he loved her, his use of the word after had malicious and tactical purposes, and would say it to manipulate her. It was important for Chuck to take this break from Blair so he could grow as a person worthy of Blair’s love.

To his credit, he hesitated kissing “Elena” in 1x22. He kisses her on the cheek initially, but since it was actually Katherine, she looked disappointed it wasn’t a real kiss. So he went in for the kiss… but super slowly lol, like he was expecting Elena to stop him. I think that might’ve been the tipping point for his feelings because when he’s at the hospital with the real Elena, she says she doesn’t know wha he’s talking about, and he says even if she can forget they kissed, he can’t, etc.

@@luckyDancer100 I think it'd be hard for anyone to resist acting on their feelings. He buries himself in other things, but that can only last for so long because their feelings are magnified. He has a hard time not being near her, which is fun to watch when she gets to hating him in season 2.
