When you make a pan-pan or any other call on VHF you contact the Coastguard, not the RNLI. The Coastguard make the decision based on their local knowledge and don't rely on visiting sailors to take a guess. Lee shore, potentially no propulsion = pan-pan call.

Had a yacht drag past us in the Solent a few years ago in Newtown Bay. Heard the anchor cables rattle together and I was awake and up in a moment, the other boat was being held off by a naked man, I was in my underpants and tee shirt. I immediately shouted to my wife “quick darling there is a naked man out here!” This got her up pretty quickly as well, and we all sorted things out straight away. His girlfriend wasn’t as amused as we were. Point is that nudity is no bar to safety so why did Auburn Lass not get stuck in straight away and if you drag the onus is on you to sort it out.

With Mylor, the marina office is only open 8am to 8pm. So if you arrive to the visitors pontoon after 8pm, you can go anywhere you want and if you leave before 8am nobody knows you have been there, not that I would ever leave early before paying 😊🤫

Can't understand why you made a pan pan call and had lifeboats escort you. Was this before you was able to start your engine and move safely away ?
@turbinia18 күн бұрын
In a lee shore situation with a potentially damaged/fouled prop, and especially with another vessel impinging, a pan-pan call is appropriate. A pan-pan call is for a situation where assistance is needed but there isn't immediate danger to the vessel or life. A situation like that could easily become much more serious very quickly which would make it too late for assistance to arrive. It's easy to be critical when not in the situation and it's not your boat at risk.
@DeeBarrymore17 күн бұрын
@@turbinia Potentially damaged ? Well, starting the engine and seeing if the boat has drive would've been my first call. If not, then on the radio for assistance.

Im afraid this an appalling use of the RNLI. Two Mark1 vessels for that? The LB is for dire emergencys only. All u needed to do once free was sail to a bouy and then sort it out... phone a friend.

It is another example of how you are being flogged by being taxed. They'll charge you for air next. We have 35,800+ kilometres of coastline and no anchoring fees at all. That is Australia of course. We were racing on the Swan River and were astounded that an English visitor asked how much it cost to sail there for a season. We were wondering, what on earth was a sailing season?

I remember being charged for staying in some harbours on the South Coast 30 plus years ago when we sailed our Sadler 29 from Poole. £15 would be OK for some amenities, but to simple drop an anchor in the mud is taking the P**s. This year my wife and I spent 13 weeks sailing our boat around the lovely Croatian islands. We avoid marinas as they can cost around £200 per night for our Lagoon 42, (very expensive for a shower and a bit of water and electricity) so spend most of our time in the many small bays (often the only boat overnight outside the peak season). Some harbours will allow you to moor alongside for couple of hours for no charge, gives you time to get some provisions, but may still charge for water, (especially on the islands) otherwise expect to pay up to £90 for an overnight berth alongside, and £50 - 60 for a buoy. We have some good ground tackle and make full use of it instead, and avoid spending money in the locations that rip us off. We anchored for several nights at anchor off Rab, and spend the money we saved in the local restaurants and shops instead. Some restaurants will provide a free berth or buoy if you eat at their restaurant.
@sailinggemini20 күн бұрын
Hi David, yes our thoughts exactly. Don't mind paying a token amount for using the facilities but cannot understand how they can charge you for using the seabed. Sailing around the Croatian islands must have been amazing but WOW it makes the South coast look cheap as chips! Sounds like you were savvy enough though and made the most of anchoring. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@sailinggemini 4 yrs ago we had to change our batteries out. We were in Mallorca. There was marina nearby that we called about having a berth for one night to make it easier for us. Needless to say at €380 for one night we gave it a miss and changed them over using our dinghy 🤣🤣

@stevenbusby570223 күн бұрын
What are they giving for their £15 pounds a night? Any security any guarantee just a greedy town with no heart. I sailed into Nova Scotia and tied up on a dock for free and had water and electric for free back in 2000. But of course now one pays for water and power but still can tie up for free. Our country has become mean and unfriendly, all for the almighty pound.

welcome to the South Coast when crewing for a charter we have been stung for anchoring fees a few times but only along the South Coast. my skipper usually told them to go away until the charter company called and told him to pay. the warning wil be a small tender puttering about waiting until you anchor then pouncing demanding money up to oyu if you leave or tell them to feck off
