First saw them at the Birchmere in an old dilapidated shopping Center in Arlington, VA in the 70’s. We were late and they wouldn’t let us into the packed joint due to fire regulations. So we stood there mesmerized watching & listening thru the glass door to John Duffy singing Wait A Minute. Never was late again and followed them to two more Birchmere locations where for awhile they played every Thursday night. Can’t tell you what I loved the most, the excellent instrumentation, the gorgeous harmonizing or the melody’s and lyrics of the songs themselves but it all came together so well. Spent so many evenings at the Birchmere drinking pitchers of beer, buying albums and CD’s ( and cassettes?! ) at their store and just taking in the “Scene”……a treasured time in my life .

I was there in 1985 and the setup and backdrop look the same. Paragliders just before sunset, whole slate of amazing acts. Rowan went on to emcee the monster jam session after the scheduled acts, that went on through the night until the sun came up. As he said goodbye, he barely had any voice left. Good times, missing so many great musicians now.

The more i listen to Tony Rice albums from California autumn to Manzanita to river suite for two guitars, the more i’m telling me that Tony Rice was a virtuoso , his awesomeness on every aspects on playing guitar is just perfect, since i discovered him it’s a delight to watch these videos of him and discovering his albums
