Some of the lunacy was appropriate. There were other good scenes from the early days, such as when he had to fend off Audrey Roberts' sexual harassment, but there are many great ones here. Half the time, you have to laugh in spite of the gravity of a situation because of his accent and how much he overreacts. (Not sure how many Irish people, whether in the realm or not, appreciate that, but I'm just saying.)

When you look at the totality to the character, he really was just a massive thug 😂, he was going to do a Michael Myers on Liz even Mighty Kevin wouldn't dare approach a shovel armed Jim even from behind with backup.
