Maybe I'm weird, but people who fit the Korean beauty standards perfectly just look boring to me. I don't get Cha Eunwoo's physical appeal - I mean, yeah, he's pretty, but he's not _appealing_ to me because there's nothing interesting about his face - it's just bland. He's also so reserved that I don't think I've ever seen his true personality, which makes the effect even more pronounced - he just seems so remote. I love Ateez's faces because they're all interesting in their own ways. I really like that they all have quite different face shapes and features - the contrasts between them is part of what makes them look so good together. I see pics of some groups (particularly girl groups, for whom the pressure to fit the beauty standards is even higher than it is for the guys) and the members look almost like clones of each other, especially when dressed alike - it's just so boring. Ateez also have such dynamic and distinctive personalities that it makes them even more appealing. (Even Jongho, our reserved little old-soul maknae, has slowly come out of his shell and isn't afraid to be his adorable, bossy little self these days!) Jongho is my bias, and it wrecks me to see how much hate he gets for his looks - I really don't understand it, I think he's gorgeous! I hate that he barely smiled for years because people told him his smile was ugly. He has possibly the most adorable gummy smile in KPop - it absolutely makes my day every time I see it! I'm so happy that enough Atinys told him that his smile was cute that he finally started letting himself smile more freely. The damage that hateful KPop fans do to these idols' self-esteem can be catastrophic. Bang Chan from Stray Kids is one of the most gorgeous, amazing idols out there, but you hear him say repeatedly that he hates the way he looks, that he's ugly, that he has a big nose, etc. He doesn't fit the stupid beauty standards, so people attack him for it, and they've made him hate himself - it's appalling. And let's not even get started with Changbin and the number of people who've called him a "visual hole", jesus. To me, Bang Chan's face is more appealing than Lee Know's, even though LK fits the stupid beauty standards. Bang Chan's face is just so interesting and open and kind - when he smiles, the corners of his eyes scrunch up, and it feels so much more genuine than the fake, practised smiles of some idols. The fact that he fits the beauty standards so closely actually turned me off Lee Know at first, because he seemed beautiful but cold/remote - but I quickly discovered that he's actually a total weirdo who is secretly very caring and obsessed with his cats, so his personality redeemed him for me 🤣 I had the same problem with Yeosang - he has that same delicate but almost remote beauty, and it took me a while to get a handle on his personality. Eventually I worked out that he makes brutally cutting comments towards the other members and endless terrible puns, and the contrast of his personality to his appearance made him much more interesting to me. It's totally fine to not find certain idols physically appealing - everyone finds different things attractive, and that's a good thing. How boring would the world be if everyone liked exactly the same thing? I just don't understand why people feel the need to insult idols and call them "ugly" when they just don't appeal to them personally. Do these people have no empathy? Do they not understand how much it hurts to read things like that about yourself? What do they get out of it? Does it make them feel better about themselves to put other people down or something? I just don't get it... it's less effort to say nothing at all, so why not put your time and energy into spreading positivity about the idols you do admire and find appealing, instead of blasting negativity and about the ones you're not into? I wish people valued kindness more.
