I was there! Hurricane Hannah lapped the entire field in the first moto. The ENTIRE field.

Very neat video. Raced there once. We arrived there the night before and I remember the shock of seeing ships above me on the river.

The revolution that changed everything about Motocross was Yamaha's innovation in their suspension. This was more important than going water cooled a few years later.

The best dirt my knobbies ever touched. Deep soft loam where you could drift a side slide for what seemed like forever. Banging a berm was like hitting a cloud. 30' high levees made for great aerobatic jumps if you wanted to show off. Raced there in 74/75 in 125/250 expert class.

I started riding motocross at the age of 3 in Germany. Never got hurt. Moved to Houston when I was 27 and rode Rio Bravo, after 2 month popped my finger when it was wet and I did a 180 turn on a straight, just a month later crash again in the sharp left turn in the very back left and fractured my shoulder and rips. Few month later crashed on the night track and broke my femur. I'm 30 now so just been living here for 3 years so far. I don't ride Rio Bravo anymore and really prefer 3 palms because I also prefer softer dirt well I'd even prefer sand because thats what I'm used to. But this video right here really made me like Rio Bravo a little more again and I definitely have respect and love these oldschool times. Awesome pictures. I wish it was videos.

The music just screams Motocross, well, at least in an elevator. This video, if you can stand the audio (I had to turn the sound off), is insanely Suzuki and Honda centric.

I remember riding that track. The first time it scared the crap out of me. It was a fast track. If you were going too fast out of the River bed you would blow the next turn. The jump would give you wings if you hit it too fast. What great memories I have of those years riding a Bultaco.

I wish they would have started about 1967 even though the American works hadn't started yet. Some of the bikes the local shops and what the garage builders were putting out were super cool for the day.

Such good memories, thanks. I was there somewhere and took pictures myself. I had a great pic of Howerton going around the right handed turn after turn 1, the one with the giant Texas sized whoops. I think it was the best pic I’ve even taken. - Steve

The Pat Jacobson bike is a sad story. In his very 1st race, 1st moto going into the 1st corner he crashed and was paralyzed. Happened at Houston SX. He would of been a good one!

We had some really fast riders who rode Rio Bravo on a regular basis, Keith Duffy, Shawn Kelly, and Greg Howard just to name a few. Duffy would have went pro but a serious ankle injury ended his career.

I remember this race, I raced Friday night at the Rio Bravo night track and broke a bone in my left hand, but we packed up and drove to Whitney and made the weight in, in town on Saturday and then went to the track. I was in a lot of pain but I had several friends racing and wanted to watch. Got home late Sunday night and had a cast put on my hand on Monday morning.
