South of the border is a dying breed of simple entertainment. It is from a by gone era. I wish society was as simple as it used to be to be.

As I kid 6/7 (1989/90) I stopped there on the way from VA to Myrtle Beach. It felt slightly more populated. However, the same vibe of a random assortment of souvenirs was similar. I didn't get to go up the tower then either. Lol.

Thanks for this Md history about a town that once was. We live in Bethesda and enjoy visiting historical places and learning about them. We will definitely have to plan a day trip to Daniels.👍

The restaurant with the turret, closest to the mall, used to be an Italian Restaurant and it only lasted a couple of years; the owners were into some less than legal stuff from what I remember. The problem with that mall is that it has nothing that sets it apart from any of the other malls; literally the same shops as most other places. I still live in this area and I go here for the F.Y.E. and the Barnes&Noble. Look at the area around it and it is thriving but that mall has been mismanaged by whomever owns the property; they've filed bankruptcy at least once

It never got off the ground. I remember when this first opened, I use to work at the Champs Restaurant. It was like the first to go. It was built in such a bad location and built in such a stupid way.

I remember growing up, and my family and I driving down 95 to go to Florida to see my grandmother and every time we would stop at south of the border. I cannot believe that it isn’t such a dilapidated state and I cannot believe the atrocious way that they are taking care of those animals, it is heartbreaking to see something that you love while you were growing up just be destroyed

I used to eat at the Moe's there all the time. There actually used to be a creek that ran through the entire thing, but it was filled in a few years before the stores were all abandoned.

So many places that have been abandoned or towns taken over in Maryland..The post office in Oxon Hill right behind it is grave site (literally out back of the post office), the dam was built over a town, College Park was a black community that was taken by the University, Patapsco Park was once a small town..so much history in this state..and where you are I have hiked before

The last two Kmart will go out of business too. Just a question of time. End. Why? The shop has not enough traffic. When I was younger 13 years of age, all these shops were crowded with people daily. I am so fortunate that I have seen how crowded all these shops were in the country in the western world.

Great video. But just a thought...thats a lot of land. It could be put to use if the state would build it up and create housing.

I really miss K-Mart. From when I was a little and they had the coin operated rides out front, to the basics (that lasted forever) the school supplies, the houswears (variety of designs that no one else had) to the garden and the the Holiday and collectables. They carried things no one else had. Loved them! And it was enjoyable to shop there, wherever I stopped at one. Traveling or local. They didnt have all the agression and drama that WM has.but maybe that drama is just the times we live in now?

Grew up behind this mall and saw this from the very beginning to now. Everything changed after the massive fight in 2008 that you referenced. The unaccompanied minors rule and the reputation this mall got from that incident really changed who you saw coming to this mall almost overnight. The mall was also poorly designed (nightmare holiday parking and traffic flow by mid 2000s standards) and executed (lots of complaints about store rents being too high, forcing some big time moves that happened before they should have). It’s almost hard to believe but they seemed to build this mall for a slightly higher tier consumer than Crabtree, evidenced by TTC having the only saks fifth avenue in all of NC. (Albeit a laughably bad Saks now that desperately wants out of its 20+ year lease) A combination of the fight, which was covered into the ground by local media, happening right as development efforts and consumer demand shifted to downtown changed this surrounding area for good imo. Twisted Fork and Champps restaurants were both gems. Sad to see today.

Hate to be political but this could be any town in western Pennsylvania. What exactly has Trump done for western Pennsylvania? Yet driving through the region is like a dystopian world with FU Biden signs … China signs etc. It’s time for local politicians to seek real solutions instead of selling people on a cult of personality. The area has tons of hard working people. The problem is that all these dysfunctional small governments do not have tax revenue to do anything and refuse to consolidate power. If u want change start thinking of regional police forces, regional development initiatives, and by all means federal $ to improve roads and infrastructure.

Back in the late 80s early 90s i was around 16 years old and this is where all the school kids in the area would bs and talk and have fun, times were really good back then , before i had my driver's license my buddy's mom would drop us kids off and we would just walk around the mall like we were so cool, then we would catch a late movie and do it all again the following week... Miss this old Mall, really enjoyed your vid thanks.

When i was a teenager in the 90s me and my best friend would small mouth bass fish this part of the river and catch literally fish after fish using crawldad tails and we would catch our own bait right at the battom of that dam, some of the biggest helgromites that you ever seen. The water was so clean back then we would swim after a long day of fishing the beautiful potapsico river , it was pretty deep at the bottom of that dam that you showed. Miss the good old days, now im 50 something and really enjoy watching your videos.

I stayed there in the early sixties on a trip as a kid with my family. We had breakfast in the restaurant. Extensive trinket shops. The restaurant had something on the ceiling Sombreros I believe. It had an exotic feeling. At that time bits of 95 were built but not connected. We generally took US 301 which started up in Maryland. 301 ran past it. The speeds were much slower and you simply turned off 301 in the place. Other than south of the border i don't recall there being much around that area at that time.

I used to work at Barnes and Noble at this mall, and still have a friend who does. We watched as the businesses on the outside of the mall closed one by one. The interior of the mall is doing ok, but the exterior really never took off. Plus, this tried to mimic Streets of Southpoint and just didn't get it. Crabtree mall in Raleigh is still very busy, but Cary Town Center (same real estate company as Triangle Town Center) which has been around for a lot longer, is now demolished.

Wasn't there a building that was known as the power plant for KPPC? Provided electricity for the complex. A building known as the bakery? Another building that disposed of garbage by burning it? Too bad you didn't find the cemetery area. Would have been interesting to see. It is sad to see so much vandalism on the buildings. And people who go inside the buildings to destroy them forget there's asbestos and lead paint in them. Perhaps there's an unhealthy punishment awaiting them in the future.

I guess Covid put the final nail in the coffin for this mail but it was in trouble a long time before that. At one point the owners were so far in debt that another company bought it for $1 promising to take on said debt. I guess that didn’t work out to well.

The Brownsville in Southwest Pennsylvania is in Fayette County it’s not a Suburb of Pittsburgh, you’re mistaken very b. It was known for Steel, the railroad and the river was there. I have friends who live there and it is very much in decline. Please don’t forget to check your facts.

Nothing wrong with this store. I don't understand why there aren't more customers. Kmart Basic Editions clothing was well made and much cheaper than the more upscale department stores. Also better than Walmart's rags.

Hi, I am a local amateur explorer and am also a huge lover of the outdoors. In this video you commented that you see lots of locals “breaking” into these buildings. Well, just so you know I was one of those individuals there with my family the day you were filming and we were not breaking into anything. We were doing exactly what you were doing, which is exploring. And another thing we are locals we did not come here from some other place just to see this and put it on the Internet so now other people could come and see this place. What is funny is that you’re not allowed to film anything in the facility because we were confronted by the state police that are still on site who informed us of this ( even though no one was filming or even had a phone in hand).I also go there to collect praying mantis eggs to put in my gardens to keep away predator bugs so I know that when me and my people go explore, we are sure to be respectful of the facility.

They would be better off selling the town to the Chinese all together. Just like the democrats always do. Drive things into the ground, then sell it off to the Asians for Pennie’s on the dollar. Just like the recent sale of the soul of America, and pride of Pittsburgh, U.S. STEEL. The scariest part about all of this is how the local government could just come in and take all of this property off of somebody under eminent domain. I understand that the guy who owned it was not doing what he said he was going to, but so long as he was paying the taxes and what not, what else was he really supposed to do? He wasn’t required to do anything more under law, so how does this set precedents for the government to be able to do this kind of thing to anybody for any apparent reason that they like and what’s even worse than that is that it appears that the government who took back all of the buildings is doing the exact same thing that this guy Legget did, they took back control of all the buildings in the town and then did absolutely not a fucking thing with him. Shame on Brownsville that’s a fucking shit hole that’s never going to be reformed just like McKees rocks McKeesport pretty much the rest of them mon Valley and Iraq.

So a little fact about the churches, in mining towns, especially those from SW PA and WV, you were prone to have several churches due to all of the different ethnic groups coming into the region to find work. My hometown of about 4000 had 3 Catholic churches until a few years ago.
