Hmm ... Thanks. Narrowed down my issue. My 2005 Rodeo has an intermittent issue with starting, turn ignition key on, flashing check engine light. But it's usually with the engine warm, eg with trying to restart after a short stop. Turn the key off, wait a bit & retry, & it usually starts next go. It's also slow to start when cold, even after a new battery & new glow plugs (no warning light errors with this). Battery guy thought Rodeos diesel slow start was a fuel system issue (ie by reputation), ie not usually the battery side (cranking). Anyone heard similar? Only had it 18 mths, so I'm still getting used to all its idiosyncrasies.
@kazoz3520Ай бұрын
P.S, before I bought it an auto sparkie told me Rodeos gave him a lot of business with replacing air con compressors. Couldn't get the smile off my face when I first lifted the bonnet & saw that shiny new compressor :) .

Good catch. It's fine to check the health of the vehicle before it starts, but bloody hell it would help to give a better clue to the driver! What if the wipers or lights blow a fuse, will it leave you stranded on the roadside?! I wonder if there is some other critical safety device on that circuit, or if that fuse something essential to the starter. Strange one alright.

I have tried three different blower covers and recoil starters. The chattering of the starter clutch caused the rope to bind inside each one. It’s a horizontal shaft 3hp engine. I did notice slight rust on the crank shaft. I will polish the spindle of the shaft and then grease it like you demonstrated. I think it will have a good chance of working, thanks!

@@IdeasBox Your solution worked. I was able to fix the pull starter, which was chattering, binding the pull rope, and stopping the engine after 1 minute of running. I found grit inside the ratchet gear. I cleaned that and polished inside the square tube. I also polished the rust off of the drive spindle and added a dab of grease to that. I was able to run it five minutes, no problem. Thanks.

This happens a lot where I live, in the PNW, because the weather is so damp during the winter, things tend to grow rust. I prefer to use a graphite lubricant, because if the grease gets down into the area where the balls catch, it could cause the balls to hang up and the starter clutch can catch during start up. Then you have a real mess, it usually kills the engine, tangles up the rope, and sometimes breaks things (ask me how I know!). Overall, its a poor design, Briggs wasn't know for their dependable recoil starters. I've lost count of how many old Briggs engines I've just changed over to a starter cup and used a loose rope on.

Oh, childhood memories of making these and winding fence wire up after fixing a moose breakage. None of our wires got that old ever, the moose took care of that. For tension we used a variation without the end LV-bend and wired a rock to it. Normal seasonal range was +35C to -35C with some dips up and down - looking back it was an amazing simple as effective setup.
