Hey! Thank you for the awesome breakdown! I'm having some trouble with something similar right now. Do you have any advice on how to transfer the color from the geo onto the hair instead of coloring it like you did? I'm trying to export fur into C4D/octane but i can't seem to find a way to make the groom color match the uv texture of the object :(

Does c4d network rendering supports GPU ??
@CosmicSandbox

Team Render should in theory support all renderers and that means it should support GPU rendering. You would need to use Redshift, Octane, Arnold, or another renderer that supports GPU rendering though to take advantage of that.

Awesome man, thank you for this! This will come in handy with the new c4d pyro tools, I'm still struggling to find the sweet spot for fire and smoke with octane, a lot of the tutorials are done with redshift unfortunately.
@CosmicSandbox
@CosmicSandbox Жыл бұрын
I'm glad it is of help! The octane tools were a bit weird compared to what I was used to in other tools so I wanted to make sure I could share what I learned with others! Redshift is a solid tool but their docs for pyro are worse as they're completely outdated... I hope they update them soon.

cool but overly complicated:) just add connectivity node which gives you attribute per connected piece, and use that attribute to offset UVs.. for example @uv.x+=rand(@class); no need for loops.. which is fine here, but if you have much more geometry, this would be too slow
@CosmicSandbox
@CosmicSandbox 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the alternate option! This is definitely a better route if you're able to use wrangles. I think for some beginners it may be easier to learn with more nodes understanding each step and avoiding code but we should all graduate to your approach in the long run at the latest.
@dnch
@dnch 2 жыл бұрын
@@CosmicSandbox you dont even have to use wrangle, use attribute randomize and insert the "class" attribute into the seed (options tab, seed attribute checkbox) :) also instead of using whole path like detail(../path to node...) you can click on the gear, add spare input, drag and drop the metadata node into the new field at the bottom of properties panel, and then you can use detail(-1,"iteration",0) but ofcourse i get your point, its good to know how loops works, and paths too:)
@dnch
@dnch 2 жыл бұрын
what is good about the "spare input" method is that it creates dim line from the source to the target node so you can see all the dependencies just from looking at the node graph

I would try exporting an alembic cache from Maya for that. I haven't done any Maya hair simulations as I really prefer using Houdini for that kind of work so I'm not certain if there are any quirks. It should however just work out.

@CosmicSandbox

You can transfer point attributes to Maya through Arnold. It should pick it up in the alembic. If you run into issues I know there are some results online that help you see how it works. It should just work using the arnold user data color node (I don't remember the actual name at this very moment).

You don't need the "Rotate Instance" component. Your object is oriented along the Y axis, just select the Y in "Align Euler"

Absolutely good point but for specific rotation that's not a 90 degree increment the rotate instance is helpful. I appreciate the insight on a more efficient approach!

Regardless of the good work you are doing here, don't reference Blender as a hobby project or such things, it is used by many professionals for paid work, blender is only a hobby project if the person using it doing it as a hobby. If you are a professional using Blender for anything work related its a tool, just like maya, C4D or any other!
@SamWelker
@SamWelker 2 жыл бұрын
I promise that’s not a degrading statement. A hobby project of software doesn’t mean it’s not capable of incredible work and professional applications. Blender is ultimately a hobbyists tool. It’s becoming a more valuable professional tool every day but by general design it’s made for hobbyists. That’s not a bad thing and doesn’t devalue it. Blender isn’t a commercial package, therefore it’s a hobbyists tool. This also sets it free to do whatever the devs want. That’s super cool and let’s us get amazing tools but they’re also not responsible to hit certain milestones by certain time frames for their user base with the fear of closing down if they don’t. Also regarding professional use I am well aware. I have hired blender artists for years on projects and am using it myself now for modeling and layout. I’m a big believer in the future of blender :)
@GaryParris
@GaryParris 2 жыл бұрын
@@SamWelker i understand why you are framing it that way, but again to re-iterate whether you think you are right on calling it that and not degrading it, it's simply not true, it's made by developers who have a job to do in coding for a living. Blender Foundation also are working with companies who do this for a living and along side high profile industry standard companies that devote money and resources to the industry and ultimately used by professionals for paid work in the whole of the paid and unpaid industry for integration and stand alone projects, it's not a perception that is the reality, so it is downgrading peoples expectations of what is or isn't professional. As a mark of respect to what Blender and their coders do for a living, please remove the hobbyist label from your thoughts, it's simply not the case and does no reflect what it is and what they do, and yes new people will believe that is, when it isn't. Remember "Professional" is just a term/label for people who have a level of competency that engage in something for money. You can say it's open source and is an alternative to the mainstream software, that is fair to say in regards to AAA projects, but that's about it.
@CosmicSandbox
@CosmicSandbox 2 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from. I think it's best if we just agree to disagree respectfully. My comment was not meant to be degrading whatsoever. It's simply meant to categorize. I'm curious as to what you'd label a software that is not made to be a commercial package.
@GaryParris
@GaryParris 2 жыл бұрын
@@CosmicSandbox software that is not made to be commercial is software you code for your own purposes and do not distribute for use in business. hobbyist software is such that it is only used by hobbyists for non business usage, or has a limited use for non business uses specific to a hobby. The idea of professional software is new and again its not an opinion it is a word used to define/label something as being used by people that are competent for generating income for a living from it. The very first generations of software(including Blender see Ton's origins of Blender) were created for highly specialised hardware and could do nothing close to today's software, primitive, they were considered professional, they were sold and used by people for making money in an industry that was just emerging! Linux was created as an alternative to mainframes, it is used in business and keeps the world connected today, it is used by a smaller proportion of people for both work and and non work related reasons, it is both a professional and hobbyist tool! Again i stress this use of hobbyist label is not correct nor is it giving the people who create/maintain it, or use it professionally everyday. to do so is just perpetuating a myth that other software is the only professional software. Most peoples idea of professional is completely ignorant of this fact. professional is a relatively new thing in modern society, it does not differentiate between good or bad, only competent and non competent, that's it! it is not an opinion to agree to disagree on, its just a statement of fact.

@@CosmicSandboxSo none of the above is said in a negative way...just wanted to get that out the way! The community that use Cinema use it as it's quite intuitive. The easiest of 3D software to learn. So to have a tool like cloner built in the way above isn't ideal. But you're right it's a tutorial on how to get the same effect. I just want Mograph tools in blender and then I'm fully converted to blender and by that I would assume a lot of other cinema users would be too.. Currently it's not quick to make motion graphics as it is in cinema. Thanks for the tut.

terrible tutorial. Mate thanks for the effort but next time practice first, find the right way to do it all the way to the end and then show how to do it (only show how to do it, not the wrong ways to do it). Instead you create lots of confusion with going back and forth, changing settings only to change then back later, you find problems and don't know how to solve them, etc. In the end one learns nothing. The result looks nice but cannot be learned with this tut
