Looking good Kev. On my tri when I got to cut the cabin side panels, they looked good until I bent them around only to discover the plans were seriously wrong at this point and the curvature of the base of the panel was way less than required. The for and aft ends were 50mm off the deck! #%@&! However they did provide a good base to hot glue tabs on and resize so as the new ones did fit perfectly. 😕 Learn by experience lesson 3247: Don’t trust plans! They occasionally have some real clangers. Particularly those not off a computer.

@saltlightdix47046 күн бұрын
Hi Clive, yeah its pretty tight up there, the starboard side is a bit worse as the beam that the crane runs on is just a little closer to the salon sides which makes moving along the deck pretty tricky. Kev
@rickcreel36578 күн бұрын
I am a jet fighter crew chief when we number locations of components we start at the nose or bow and measure every foot aft then we point to the clock direction of the destination of wiring. The first number is the distance aft, and the second number is the clock direction. Everywhere a wire can be easily seen the number is placed. They make shrink-fit numbers that you can place on each wire, like wedding bands. You don't need a wiring diagram. because any time you see a wire starting from the circuit breaker you know the destination of the wire.

Hi Rick, yeah I did some very large AV installations ( we did all the Olympic Venues for the Sydney 2000 games) without cable schedule it would have been impossible to do. Going back to those venues later to do upgrades of maintenance having the numbers made it so much easier. Kev

Check out Sailing Cruising Zatara; in a recent episode they have removed their escape hatches and fibreglassed over the holes because they had so much water ingress problems with them, ( and hopefully, very little likelihood of ever using them!). Love your work!
@saltlightdix470417 күн бұрын
Hi Glenn, yes they can be problematic, but they are still required for certification, not sure if Zatara has come into any insurance issues from removing them. The Dix design actually has an angled frame around the hatch itself to help protect it from taking the full force of the waitron the edges of the hatches. @derekfawell2853 - there is an angular support that goes between the hull and the underside of the main deck that runs the length of the boat. This is to fit out the “gap” in that support.

Hiya Kev! I've been meaning to write commending your desire to get retirees to engage with the project. It's so important for us humans to be useful, to contribute to something bigger than just ourselves. And the common feeling of appreciation felt is such a sustaining force we need more than ever in the latter stages of our lives. so Chapeau Kev! Building a boat and sharing the experience with others is fantastic, but helping others feel useful is a whole other level. If I was anywhere near I'd be happy to help. Instead I'm up a mountain in Italy with no central heating and trying to install some. Time for me to be useful to myself!
@saltlightdix4704Ай бұрын
@@markfrost9087 Hi Mark, thanks for your encouraging words. If you ever find yourself traveling in Japan please come by! Wow in the mountains of Italy, sounds cold for winter. It’s funny here, most houses only heat the room they are in only and generally by kerosene heaters. Get cracking on your central heating so you can get through winter :) Kev
@markfrost9087Ай бұрын
@saltlightdix4704 I just restored and sold an Edwardian house that had no central heating and the old ladies who owned it before me just carried storage heaters from room to room during their period of ownership -- they must have been pretty tough old gals. I've been to Japan twice, last time in 2014 with my wife's ashes. She was born Mjorengi near Yokohama and she had asked me to see if the owners of her childhood home would mind me putting some of her ashes in a flower bed. They were very kind and allowed it. I do love lots of things about Japan but I've got some other places I would rather go such as Thailand to see and old friend and to visit my niece who lives just north of Sidney. But, having sold the Sunderland house I now want to invest some resources and time into this old mountain home which has been on my back burner for more than ten years. It's quite overgrown outside and a bit decrepit inside. I installed a lot of state of the art tech in the Sunderland house toale it more ecologically and economically sustainable and I want to do the same here, replacing all the central heating system and domestic hot water

Kev; Very much like seeing the boat progressing I am sure you get more excited as it looks more and more complete. Three questions for thought as I catch up on your video series. BTW your filming is getting better ...... 1] Do you ever use hot glue for temporary bonding, I have seen a few times where I think you could have benefited. 2] Do you plan to take the boat across the canal on rented steel trench plates, here in the states they are rented from shoring companies to utility contractors to allow traffic over open trenches, typical plate steel 3/4" to 1 1/4" thick 4 foot x 8 foot or 10 foot or longer. Likely will need a Engineer to do some calcs, the rental company may provide this for you (assuming your boat will be legal highway load). 3] Do you plan to launch directly into the water from the other side of the canal,(using a barge and crane maybe) or are you transporting to a marina? (Are you planning to do more work in a marina before launching into the water) 4] Are you on schedule with the boat build verses your building lease time (ha extra credit question). ...... Also what type of trailer are you considering to move out of the building since you have a low door and then have to turn 90 degrees, are you looking at small tired dolleys under the hulls?
@saltlightdix47042 ай бұрын
Hi Vernon, thanks for watching and joining us on this adventure. Let me answer your questions 1 Yes from time to time I use hot glue, mainly for making templates. 2 Its a funny thing here, they don't do rental stuff that much, you hire a company to do things like that. Im still working on a plan, probably try to borrow a couple of I beams for the trailer to run across. 3 The plan is to launch directly into the port so I just need to get to the other side. 4 hahahahahaha .........schedule .......I have extended the lease to the end of 2025, but will hopefully will only need to extend by 6 months. I building had been vacant for about 8 years before I moved in and I don't believe the owners have any plans for the building going forward. Extra Q The trailer will be custom made, it will need the support the boat over the canal and also be able to lift up so I can fit the keels once Im outside. Yes it is a very tight fit height wise, but it will fit. Yes it will be some sort of dolly type wheel, just need to find the right ones that can take the weight. Kev
