Before putting the cover back on, did you lubed or greased up the timing chain or prevent dry start?

I believe in the video where I am installing timing chain I talked about soaking it in oil over night. IF it's already installed I'm sure you can shoot some oil at it

You ever come across a 3.8 with a milled fire ring in either the block or heads? I have a lower assembly with that. I’m concerned if I can just not worry about that or do I have to have new fire rings installed in your opinion? I’d rather remove them and just leave the groove, but I’m concerned that I wouldn’t be able to do that

The cam sensors he shows are extreme in price. Later less expensive versions are readily available. The 87 cam sensor port is at the top of the chain cover. He had to modify this port due to the double row chain. Now he tries a much earlier OEM sensor that runs off the distributor gear....an inferior setup. Best to use a quality steel chain, & iron gear along with the stock tensioner. The stock gear can be easily modified for +/- 6 degree advance/retard cam timing

Aluminum stage I & II heads are hard to find. They have huge ports, that are not practicle on a street/strip engine. We have another "d0n't kn0w nuthin" in the comments. "Kn0w nuthin" can't spell either it's they're not "there" heavier.

Your cam has a non groove front journal. This cam takes a wider front HD bearing, back grooved with dual oil ports. The front bearing must be installed with oil ports @ 2:00 & 7:00. The rear core plug controls the horizontal center of the rollers on the cam lobes. Afterward if any of the rollers are badly off center your cam is defective. The stock front cam thrust spring pushes the cam back against the core plug, or aftermarket types with adjustable horizontal clearance are available. I use the stock spring type with my Competition Cams roller. It is ok to very mildly clearance the lifter skirts, or very carefully and mildly bevel/radius the sharp edges of the cam lobes to fix minor clearance errors in this area......MINOR AS IN VERY SMALL is the key. Otherwise try another brand lifter (just 1) at first, before buying a whole set if needed.

Cleaning the hard way. STUPID! Use a cut down barrel (35 gallon if possible) a 55 gallon will do, or similar. Diesel will cut most of it. A gallon of mineral spirits added helps.

I have a 350 Buick and put together an oil pump for it. When the motor is full hot it won’t go over 30psi. I reckon I need to get my oil pump dialed in. New crank and cam bearings I don’t think engine clearance is the issue.

Are you letting the car shift while tuning wot? I think I heard a shift on a pull. Also why are you not hitting both buttons on the scanmaster to show the mph the number was recorded? That may be the reason you see inconsistency s on the scan master. My scanmaster snapshots are rock solid on 3rd gear pulls with no up or down shift.

New rings and bearings do not cost a lot. Seems to have plenty of "budget" for everything else. Do not follow this "builders" examples. Hot tank your block, and install new bearings, rings, chain, core plugs, and seals.
@J-Finelli231
@J-Finelli231 Жыл бұрын
If you're going to go through the trouble of breaking the motor down for rings and bearings, why not just add pistons? If you're going to add pistons, why not add rods? What about that stock crank? Caps? Where does it end???? The title of this video is engine "freshen up." My goal was to toss a pair of heads on. Not rebuild the engine. Some people do this without even removing the engine from the car.

I was told to separate the cometics by Weber Racing here in Ohio and spray each layer with copper spray-a-gasket and they still seep out of the back of the head. Nothing drastic but it IS annoying
@J-Finelli231
@J-Finelli231 Жыл бұрын
I’m familiar with that method and have done it before. I like it because the layers have contamination between them so I like them cleaned. I don’t like it because it makes a big complicated mess with all the sprayed layers. Cometic themselves have recommended the gaskets be installed dry for at least 20 years. I just spray the outer layer because my block wasn’t machined. If it was, I would have possibly put them on dry. Depend on my mood. This way has sealed for me with 100’s of 30psi pulls over the years
