Sari is the queen of gorgeous textured sweaters. She has several new ones coming up, each prettier than the other. Your test sweater is beautiful! Can’t wait to see it completed. I’m determined to be the only person in the entire online knitting community who will never knit the Ranunculus. In fact, I blocked it years ago in my setting on Ravelry so I don’t have to see it. But no further comments so since many people love it. Great job on your Salty Day. Looks perfect on you. I love the ease on it, and the color!

thank you so much! haha as far as the ranunculus, it’s not for everyone! honestly I just yesterday mentioned to my buddy knitting friend I feel like we only made it to see what all the hype was about. I enjoyed the process but I want to be more aware going forward if I am making something because it’s popular or because it’s actually my style - something we all have to learn in our creative journeys! will have to discuss that on a future knit & chat or next podcast episode.

Your Salty Days is so perfect and that Sari Nordlund test knit is just like a cosy cloud! I finished my Salty Days yesterday and I plan to post an Instagram update today. I’m about to drop big bucks for an interchangeable needle set. But that’s a worthy splurge because I’m no longer a beginner. For beginners I recommend splurging on a few good 40” cable needles and saving on yarn. I have basic stitch markers, a barber cord for holding stitches, and free bags from prior purchases that I use as project bags. Oh and recently I got blocking mats with pins. I would love a swift and winder, but I don’t need it. It’s a want, not a need. I don’t knit as much to justify the purchase. So basically I hold back because I don’t have a lot of space, I don’t like clutter, and I don’t want to fall into the rabbit hole of overconsumption.
@morganunraveled
@morganunraveled 6 күн бұрын
I completely agree. I think it can be so easy to fall into overconsumption with our hobbies to the point where it’s overwhelming and stressful. definitely important to find that balance that works for us!

Interchangeable needle sets are the best investment. I love having (most) everything I need in one case. As you said, the cables make or break magic loop knitting. I’m a red cable Chiaogoo lover, I don’t know what could be better. I think 9” circular success depends a lot on how you hold your work. I’m a closed hand continental knitter so the 9” are comfortable since I’m on top of my needles anyway. I especially love them for vanilla socks. Light bulb stitch markers and barber cord are a must for me too. I knit a lot of socks so I love my sock ruler. I splurge on cute progress keepers because I like to track my daily knitting sessions. And as I’m getting older a neck light is always in my project bag, especially with darker yarns.
@morganunraveled
@morganunraveled 11 күн бұрын
that’s such a good point & I love your additional musts! I knit continental but don’t keep my hand very closed, I probably could work on that to prevent so much wrist strain 🥲

Hi Morgan! I also have the playmats as blocking mats. So cheap, and I don't have a guilty conscience letting my kid play with them as well. Sooooo, quarter of the price, unlimited usefulness! ;D I have a KnitPro interchangeable needleset and it changed my knitting forever. I used to use scrapyarn to hold my stitches, now I simply take off the needles and add stoppers and when it's time to pick the stitches up, I just have to reconnect the needles! I am considering buying another set, not because I need it, simply because they look so pretty. :b
@morganunraveled
@morganunraveled 11 күн бұрын
what a genius idea!! I will definitely pick up some mats. will probably place them on the patio to actually block my sweaters though so he doesn’t mess with them! good point, I definitely think if you have enough cables it’s nice to keep them on instead of scrap yarn or stitch cords but I have more WIPs than my cords can keep up with haha!
@nachtigall8288
@nachtigall8288 11 күн бұрын
@morganunraveled Mostly, I don't need all the mats, so while some are used for blocking, he can use the rest. He loves helping me set them up though. Sometimes I give him a swatch so he can block "his" piece next to me. 🥰

I would suggest for anyone wanting to learn that trying the 9" needles with the largest size (72stitch size) socks is so beneficial. That really had me learning how to use the 9" needles and now that I know it's sooooooooo much faster than magic loop

great point!! I think my issue is I knit my socks with 64 sts so there stitches end up too spaced out over the 9in circulars to feel natural!
@lifeoutnumbered
@lifeoutnumbered 16 күн бұрын
@@morganunraveled It can get there tho. my typical cast on is 56 stitches and I'm able to knit that now. But I also think tension plays a big part too and I can see how a tighter tension knitter for example would struggle with that.

@@Nardaa-ox3be Go loose with the cast on. I always feel so scared the edge will look funky but it ends up being fine. And try to keep your stitches you are working as close to the points as possible to minimize hand movements. I have EDS and carpal tunnel and don't get hand pain. And for reference my regular stitch count for socks is the smaller size of 56 stitches and I can still knit them fine.

I slightly disagree with getting cheap needles in the beginning. When I first started I got cheap needles over 10 years ago and it discouraged me from even continuing. Recently I picked knitting up again and I got a lykke birchwood set and it’s made a world of a difference. Cheap things will cost you more in the long run.

Thank you for sharing your experience & opinion! I agree, investing in our hobbies is so valuable. However if you aren’t sure knitting is for you, trying new hobbies can be so much more intimidating when it’s expensive to start & it can make it more accessible to offer affordable alternatives. I do agree that purchasing an affordable interchangeable set rather than a bunch of fixed needles is much more affordable in the long run once you’re comfortable spending a bit more 🥰
