Must have been in Ljubljana around the same time as you. I went to Ljubljana Castle and went to the top of the observation tower. It was well worth the effort walking up the steps. 400 meters above sea level. Apparently, it was raised by 1.2 meters in 1982 because of course 38.8 meters above sea level isn't as impressive. 🤔

Ljubljana is one of my favourite places. The views from atop the tower at the castle, looking at the Alps are spectacular. I can't wait to go back there later this year. The railway museum is a good way to spend a couple of quiet hours too. Plus there is a nice funicular up to the castle if you have had a heavy night in the Sir William pub :) Then a gentle walk back down to the historic town via the gardens.

Another of your very best Johnny! You're a regular Ian Nairn minus the melancholy ruminations! I've long been curious about Ljubljana and I had no idea it was this lovely. Fifty years ago, I had a Latin teacher from Yugoslavia. The grapevine had it that she had escaped from Ljubljana...by swimming across the harbour. My only slight criticism is that I would add just a little bit of history. Slovenia was part of the Austrian empire until 1918 (hence Emperor Franz Josef), then part of Yugoslavia until that country broke up in the early 1990s. People of our generation, Johnny, know that. But younger people may not.

@@Fan652w very good point. It is always a problem of writing a script that isn't too long for the content. I do find the Balkans fascinating because it is such a pressure cooker of cultures, tribes and , of course, empires playing "the great game" (usually with the lives of the locals). I would heartily recommend Misha Glenny's book "The Balkans", which takes things from 1804 up to the end of the 20th century... there's a lot of killing in it! I hope the apparent stability of Slovenia can be spread to the rest of the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo particularly is a worry right now.

Slovenia is putting much effort in repelling people from taking trains and this is a perfect example. A Flirt with sub-standard interior used as an international train with a commuter train schedule (thousands of stops on the line which is already slow itself: 2 hrs for 100 km is ridiculous, travel times were probably the same in the times of K. und K., when the line was built), while it's priced as a regular international train with all amenities that one expects. 1st class is a 100% joke.

Great video - so many people don't appreciate how accessible PIK is. If you are south of Glasgow/M77 it's the closest and most accessible option. Tragic there aren't more passenger flights, PIK has direct rail link, motorway/dual carriageway to the door, two operational runways, rarely if ever fogbound and pilots love it; whilst the passenger terminal is sadly underused, the airport itself is used a lot, with plenty cargo, military and maintenance flights. it is far from dead, and I dearly wish more airlines would consider it and more people could use it.
