I ran into Mr Van Horn in front of Barron's Meat and Seafood on Church St in Noe Valley the week after I'd seen him perform in Carmen at SFO. I did not recognize him immediately but it was his Tshirt that read "SF OPERA ORCHESTRA" that stopped me and my subsequent question … was he in the SF Opera Orchestra? He said no "but I work down there". He asked me if I remembered the horse that came out. I said yes, it came out twice. He said he was on it the first time. I told him I thought it was a fine production with fine singing and so glad I saw it. I was a block away before I realized that the man on the horse was the toreador!!

Saw SF production on 11/01/24. The modern costumes were a bit off putting but the singing and music was moving for me. The setting was better than the one at the MET's last version on a British modern warship.

Easily the best “Tristan and Isolde” in SF in decades. Beautifully sung, played, and conducted in a classy production. I’ve been an SF Opera patron for nearly 30 years and this is in my top 10 of productions at the War Memorial and the best Wagner I’ve seen there.
@Dan4748342 ай бұрын
Sorry but this performance of Tristan was terrible, it feels like the conductor hasn’t even attempted to listen to the great recordings of it. Virtually non-existent brass, and she played Wagner like a Hanon exercise.
@Dan4748342 ай бұрын
And I don’t understand how with all the donations they get, how they don’t have funds to honor the score. They used a reduced orchestra. The score calls for two harps, there was only one, and every section was much too small for a Wagnerian orchestra. I could barely even hear the orchestra. Any European opera house would laugh at this production.

Fully disagree. I was there tonight. The orchestra was 72 players strong. The score doesn’t need two harps. I heard every note from singers and orchestra. Kim conducted the score excellently. Pacing allowed the singers and music to breathe without sacrificing pace. It was easily the best Tristan at SF Opera in decades. I’m sorry you experienced things differently. Seems like maybe you went in with an agenda.
@Dan4748342 ай бұрын
@ I have seen Tristan in 5 different opera houses including at Bayreuth and have never seen it performed with less than 100 musicians in the pit. And the inaudible backstage chorus? The inaudible brass? This is supposed to be the most passionate score in all opera, where was the passion? The most timid interpretation of Wagner I’ve ever heard.
@matthewtravisano10972 ай бұрын
@ I’ve heard Tristan in three different opera houses, including the Met, and this was the best one.

@@matthewtravisano1097 I think it needed more fortissimo in the orchestral phases without voice. Apart from that, voiced and production were superb.
