How do you know they were attacking it 20 minutes before you arrived?
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours6 сағат бұрын
Because a friend of mine (another whale-watch captain) was there on another boat and saw it start and called me on the radio. And yet another one was there after we left, so I know how it finished.

It was definitely a bigger fight than they usually pick, but the payout was worth it in the end.

@AlaskaWhaleanddronetoursКүн бұрын
I'm rooting for the animal(s) struggling to survive. Both the Orca and Sea Lion need to live, but just because they are both the "good guys", doesn't mean that we can't appreciate the valor, courage and strength of the Sea Lion, and the intelligence, teamwork and power of the Orca at the same time.

Here’s what I don’t understand about a lot of these videos. Couldn’t the sea lion head toward land? I don’t know how far out to sea this was. But he can go up on land. Orca’s can’t. Just like when Orca’s hunt sharks. Why don’t the sharks just dive straight down into the deep. They don’t need air to breath, but the Orca’s do.
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours6 күн бұрын
Well, the land was about a mile away, and I think the Orca might have had a plan if he tried going that way. The shark diving plan might also not work so well, as Orca have been documented diving over 3,500 feet deep, and Great Whites usually live near the coast where their prey is.
@JacobsGaming646 күн бұрын
If that were a great white shark this would have been over in the first 5 minutes let alone over 2 hours that sea lion is him taking on 6+ orcas for 2+ hours like bruh try to comprehend that no shark no human is withstanding that for as long.

I remember the phrase "starving with your belly full." Applies here. Grizzly bears do not eat the salmon flesh, just the fat. Polar bear don't eat the flesh, just the blubber. Great whites - blubber-only. They have to keep their own fat layer intact to stay warm. It takes fat, to maintain their fat. Eating muscle - starving with your belly full.

A fight for several hours of many Orcas against a sea lion...was it woth it? Wouldnt it be easier to eat some sea weed instead?
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours14 күн бұрын
I think the Orca are much more efficient when they move through the water than you give them credit for! The amount of energy each orca expended to kill this Sea Lion was probably regained by the first two or three pounds of fat they ate off of it, and there were hundreds of pounds of meat for them to eat! They can’t digest Seaweed. 😕

All that biochemical energy spent (from several individuals) to gain a 650 kg meal … hope it was worthwhile; again from a biochemical perspective!
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours15 күн бұрын
I think the Orca are more efficient at moving through the water than we give them credit for, and that the Sea Lion fat is higher in calories/energy than we realize. It might have only cost each of them a couple pounds of Sea lion "fuel" to do all that hunting, in which case the hundreds of pounds they get from it would be well worth it. I guess we need to find out how much energy it takes them to swim quickly like that with lots of jumps and evasive maneuvers?

Really sad for the brave and strong sea Lion but that's nature. If it was just a 1 on 1 he could make it alive because of his agility and strenght.
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours15 күн бұрын
He probably could! Only the biggest and most desperate Orca would try for him 1 on 1, too much risk of getting chewed on. But the Orca's greatest strengths are their brains, numbers, and ruthlessness.

Sea Lions regularly swim out in open waters, diving hundreds of feet deep to catch fish and squid. They hang out together to rest, but usually swim solo when they're out hunting.

The Orca weren't in any hurry, and most whales don't have teeth like a Sea Lion! They were taking their time, not in a hurry, and finished the job cleanly without any injuries. The ones that take down whales are in much larger pods, and specialize in those hunts. Those hunts can last hours too!
