And I'd like to add this. There is 1 horse we have overlooked here which I believe would have matched Kingston Town stride for stride, and that was Tulloch. Now, Tulloch ran in I think 4 Melbourne Cups and was controversially withdrawn from the 1957 Melbourne Cup( which is recognised as a tradegy because he would have won easily). And Tulloch nearly died when he came down with a virus which took some time for the veterinarians to pinpoint and implement an effective treatment. Both KT and Tulloch and another horse Manikato ( who also had problems with his suspensory ligaments ) faced physical challenges that they needed to overcome to continue their racing careers.

As a general rule, agree with that, usually when the pace is above average during the race. Can also say similar about Caulfield Cup the week before with 2 imports running quinella and many lengths back to 3rd. We breed for speed and is why trainers have been sourcing more & more middle distance & staying horses from overseas over last 10-15 years and doesn't appear to be slowing down.

Yep, massive shame had to retire early due to injury. Goes down as one of those "could've been" champions. She was dominate, won by big margins and as you said, one of the most talented. Other "could've been" champions I can remember that retired early due to injury were, Vain (late 60's), Sobar (early 70's), Dulcify (late 70's), maybe Sir Dapper (mid 80's), Almaarad (late 80's) plus i'm sure there are others. Then there's champions that could've been even greater champions if injury didn't cut their career's short, Better Loosen Up, Saintly, Might And Power, Northerly and in most recent time top class Without A Fight (2023).

Sure was. One of the better Cox Plate wins, a real 2040m test with best horse winning. Better Loosen Up is my favourite horse of all time and recently put together a clip of nearly all his wins. If haven't seen it and wish to, can see on following link, kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqPbpJSrrtZ0bKM

I would like to second taco, one of my best punting options in 38 years of punting. At his best one of the better sprinters I have seen, a little like Gold Brose when talk of top sprinters comes around, a little under rated when you have Takeover Target, Miss Andretti and Black caviar and others racing around him, but he would hold his own against all of them.

Good to hear and agree was good punting option providing the right track conditions. Still have not seen All Silent's first race start/win but picked him out after his 2nd race start/win and never looked back. IMO he was a miler & maybe 2000m who could sprint. Was a shame not to see him be given chance to run more 1600m races and stretch out to 2000m in 2010 & 2011 but his amazing sprint wins in Spring 2009 put end to that.

Glad to hear that. He went to my 3rd favourite of all time - one above Might & Power - due to the punt as well. Nearly all wins All Silent was good price due to racing style. Unbelievable sprint but did need track conditions & the right track/long straight to perform at his best.

There are horses who come along about every five or ten years who are severely underrated. They are genuine group 1 winners who are not quite rated up with the best of their generation. When I first started watching racing a horse like Planet Ruler was like that, then we had Shaftesbury Avenue, All Our Mob, Grand Armee, Desert War, Racing To Win,, Defier, Shogun Lodge, Happy Clapper, Cascadian and others and this guy falls into that category. A group 1 winner in four nations, won group 1's from 1400m to 2400m, was rated at one time as the best miler in the world and defeated good horses all through his career.

Yeah agree Starcraft was underrated but guess is due to not winning the big races in Aust. as a 4 & 5 year old. Can add Elvstroem to that list plus, as you said, others. From that list of top-class performers, think Shaftesbury Avenue is best together with Starcraft and they are similar style of horses - big in size & stride and sadly for them the tight circuit of Moonee Valley didn't suit so their respective Cox Plate races didn't go so well.
