And I'd like to add this. There is 1 horse we have overlooked here which I believe would have matched Kingston Town stride for stride, and that was Tulloch. Now, Tulloch ran in I think 4 Melbourne Cups and was controversially withdrawn from the 1957 Melbourne Cup( which is recognised as a tradegy because he would have won easily). And Tulloch nearly died when he came down with a virus which took some time for the veterinarians to pinpoint and implement an effective treatment. Both KT and Tulloch and another horse Manikato ( who also had problems with his suspensory ligaments ) faced physical challenges that they needed to overcome to continue their racing careers.

As a general rule, agree with that, usually when the pace is above average during the race. Can also say similar about Caulfield Cup the week before with 2 imports running quinella and many lengths back to 3rd. We breed for speed and is why trainers have been sourcing more & more middle distance & staying horses from overseas over last 10-15 years and doesn't appear to be slowing down.

There are horses who come along about every five or ten years who are severely underrated. They are genuine group 1 winners who are not quite rated up with the best of their generation. When I first started watching racing a horse like Planet Ruler was like that, then we had Shaftesbury Avenue, All Our Mob, Grand Armee, Desert War, Racing To Win,, Defier, Shogun Lodge, Happy Clapper, Cascadian and others and this guy falls into that category. A group 1 winner in four nations, won group 1's from 1400m to 2400m, was rated at one time as the best miler in the world and defeated good horses all through his career.
