That is to jettison the canopy in the very unlikely case that you have to bail out. In gliding, especially competition gliding, gliders often fly close together in thermals which creates a risk of a collision.

I would guess this was all choreographed between the glider and plane to show the speed and performance of a glider . Wings were flexing quite a bit so I'd guess it was really pushing well above normal flight cruise speed .
@Frigate3563 жыл бұрын
It was planned, yes. Speed was about 35 knots above cruise, not pushing. The Swift was flying slower than normal too. The wings unloaded when I hit a 'bump' just before pulling up so a great illustration of typical wing flex in this ship. Others, like the J3, flex much more. Will do formation with a Glassair, a very quick aircraft, soon.

how is the actual performance of this glider in climb and jump? I am thinking of buying one myself
@Frigate3564 жыл бұрын
It's got a very good polar for Cross Country application - good cruise performance. Glide ratio is 50:1. Controls respond well for an 18M ship - not heavy feeling. Good slow flight characteristics for thermalling. I'm still in awe of it. There are some articles you can Google up - reviews/test flights by experienced pilots. It's certainly all I could ever ask for performance wise.

Is it that easy to fly a glider?
@Frigate3564 жыл бұрын
It is easier to get a gliding license because you don't have to learn somethings in gliding that you must in powered flying.. Flying itself is not that difficult at all... it just takes instruction and practice. Glider pilots end up having better flying skills because there is more emphasis on actual flying. You may be surprised to know that many military pilots, astronauts started off gliding. Neil Armstrong started as a glider pilot and then went back to gliding after his astronaut career. Gliding is also costs a lot less. When you get your glider pilot license, you can progress to whatever level you like. Just basic gliding near the airport.. or you can become a cross country pilot and go out exploring well beyond the airport... up to many hundred miles.

Nice cloud street! I like how you have the paneI - simple and clear of distractions. I see that it doesn't have winglets for the 18m. DO you see an advantage if having winglets in both 15 and 18m? Thanks
@Frigate3564 жыл бұрын
The outboard 3 feet on each wing has extra dyhedral but no winglets on this model. If there is a mod available, I don't think it would improve the performance enough to justify the cost. It already has a 50:1 glide ratio which is a dream. Going to the 15M config costs about 10% in performance so I always fly 18M config. Yes, nice straight forward panel, thanks. I also bring a backup Nav unit (a phone running XCSoar). Cheers.

Found your video from researching a LAK 17a to purchase. How's the flying characteristics in your opinion?
@Frigate3564 жыл бұрын
Keeping in mind that I have only been gliding for 3 years (33 years as a powered pilot) with experience in only 4 gliders (ASK-21, DG500, LS4b and Lak17b)... I absolutely love the Lak17b. It was love at first sight and at first flight. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to buy this one which is in pristine shape. There's not a lot of them around, in fact, I've never seen another one. The flying characteristics are very good in all envelopes and the performance is impressive. 50:1 glide ratio and the polar is lovely (great cruise performance). It rigs/derigs nicely with a one man rigging system. I'm based in Canada. I had it in Florida last year for some late season flying. But like I said, I don't have much to compare it to. I did do a lot of research before committing to the purchase and I didn't find anything bad, pretty much all positive, so, it was hard to say no to the opportunity. Good luck. If you get it, reconnect with me to share notes. Cheers !!!

My first land out and young Alex's first tow retrieve. Glad that dovetailed together. Remember, don't grumble or bitch about pilots landing out, even if it inconveniences you. Putting that cancer in the minds of junior glider pilots may lead to an accident caused by conflicted decision making when faced with a possible landout.
@paulmoffat93064 жыл бұрын
There was a report (When Germany was still separated into E and W), that a glider had accidentally flown into East Germany. They sent up one of their helicopters to force it down. The West German pilot was having none of that, turned it towards the West border, and pushed to maximum. He out ran the East German helicopter, and managed to make it back and landed safely. Naturally, the East Germans said 'What incursion?'.
@Mike-012343 жыл бұрын
Interesting story not sure what you mean by "Pushed to Maximum"
@rensvanampting2343 жыл бұрын
Really interesting as back in the days, gliders weren't made of plastic but of wood, so gliders couldn't really go as fast as they go now. Now, they can reach up to 300 km/h whereas those old ones practically don't go over 150 km/h. So how could such an aircraft outrun a powered helicopter? Could you give me a source, because I'm really interested in the story
@MrMichaelvandekoppel3 жыл бұрын
Well, plastic glider has been around well before the fall of the wall. The top speed of a LS4 (typical glider of the eighties) is 270 km/h.
@mattias65393 жыл бұрын
@@Mike-01234 Typically a glider will have no engine. The way one controls speed is by utilising the elevator. By pushing the control stick forward one deflects the tail up and hence the nose down. (The elevator goes down). This causes the glider to descend and pick up speed. Unless you’re inverted. Then the opposite would apply. So in a glider and all aeroplanes, elevator controls speed and if the aeroplane has an engine, the engine controls rate of climb or descent. And if in straight and level flight (no up or down elevator), the engine speed will control the aircraft speed (slow or fast).
