I never use "Winton". It contains a high proportion of fillers. That's why it's cheap.
@McSherryStudioArtАй бұрын
@@kevin-parratt-artistThanks for your comment. That's true Kevin. Winton is made for people starting out and to be generally affordable. You can still make perfectly good paintings from them though. I'd guess that a huge percentage of artworks have cheaper paint in them at some level. Expensive paints don't necessarily help you.

I suppose once you mix your desired color, you then recreate it in a larger amount to paint with? How do you remember your increments?
@McSherryStudioArtАй бұрын
I think you'd need to mix the amount that you gauge will be necessary for the coverage you need. For this exercise, I only needed a small amount. If you have a large area to cover, you'd need to mix an appropriate amount. The increments would be proportionate to the amount, if that makes sense. Try to avoid having to mix another amount of you can. I hope that answers your question.

New York City here. 🤗 I believe the Winton brand is student grade, rather than artist grade. I'd like to use alkyds because they remain more flexible over time than oil paint, the colors all dry at the same rate and they all have the same sheen when dry. But, they're hard to find, even here in NYC.
@McSherryStudioArt3 ай бұрын
Hi Edie - that's right, Winton is student grade but decent quality. I'm going to try out a number of brands that are more common in the US if I can get them. We do have Gamblin and Williamsburg in our local shop; I think they're generally avaiable in the States. Do let me know. Thanks for commenting.

Well for my first go! Tried to follow along. Yes was a bit fast. Colours, I didn’t have the right blue, I didn’t have the rose. I tried the wash, but wasn’t sure if i5 was made of paint and spirit? . My sky went green every time I added the blue! Had to stop at 20 mins in. Try again another time. I won’t let it put me off lol
@McSherryStudioArt5 ай бұрын
You can do it! Wash: a bit of paint, lots of turps. Roughly the consistency of milk. Then tamp it down with your rag so you're not painting into a liquid.
@MsVivian995 ай бұрын
@@McSherryStudioArt Hi ! Thankyou :). I shall try that! I had painted on a bit turps mixed with bit of orangey paint and it soaked in, instantly . Using canvas sheet from a canvas pad, just to start maybe that had something to do with paint drying so fast. Then had problems keeping blue ,blue, kept turning green. I have ordered more Winton newton colours, the rose and cobalt blue and see if I have better luck! The good thing was I enjoyed having a go! “Painting” in the bin now.
