It's a pretty strange song, if you ever heard the full song of "Clementine", about a miner singing about his original love, Clementine, a tiny girl with big old feet, who drowned driving ducks into water, but tripped on wood, fell in and died (since the miner couldn't swim to save her), and then he goes after his sister.

I think I fell in love with Tom Lehrer when I was 16 (1963)! I was at a friend's house and she played his first record as we ate brownies and I was laughing so hard I nearly choked! I told my mom about Tom Lehrer and she immediately got me the record. Then she found the second one and we listened and laughed for hours. Then "That Was the Week That Was" started showing on TV and a new record was purchased. I started memorizing his songs and would sing them at parties, sans piano, and would sing them until someone would force me to stop! I loved the "Vatican Rag" but since most of my friends were Catholic it was not appreciated. In the early 1980's a friend found the "Tom Lehrer Songbook" with the lyrics.

@@dianewien683 - Thanks for sharing, Diana! Out of all of Mr. Lehrer's songs you've sung at parties, which was the one you've had the most requests *not* to? 😁

@@AlexSh789 I suppose it was the Vatican Rag! When I was teaching science in a high school I promised any student who learned "The Elements" an A. Only one student did it was he did get an A! I used to play it for each of my classes. I never did memorize myself however. I also played " Pollution" for them so we could discuss why pollution was so dangerous for the environment. My Favorite song is "Smut" because the wordplay us so fun but I also have always sung "Oedipus Rex" to my friends, again because I love "his daughter is sister and his son is his brother" ! My therapist loves it!

Tom Lehrer was such a genius. A HARVARD professor who might have treated students to some of the greatest songs since that time. “We’ll all fry together when we fry. We’ll be French fried potatoes by and by.” Friends and I obsessed with memorizing the best lyrics. NEW MATH comes around every so often. Nobody writes songs about the ‘newest new Math’. But it’s all asinine. It was then, it is now.
